- Watchmaking Vlog Episode 49
In this watchmaking episode I showcase my weeks worth of work in the watchmaking workshop. Designed the ETA 6498 wheel train bridge in Fusion 360 and then made the part on the Bantam Tools CNC.
I did use my watchmakers lathe to recess with the screw holes and to make the alignment pins for my watch.
I hope you enjoyed this episode, it was more about setting dialogue so the next episode will be more watchmaking.

Aah...number 2 was imminent...excellent! By now things will have settled down somewhat. My fourth son was born the week before lockdown began in March 2020.....it was ......interesting. I am really stoked to see your progress, Dean. I understand how life can sometimes seem like it's getting you down, and it awesome to see you working your way up and out the other side of that dark pit, mate. You may feel like you haven't been able to achieve as much as you'd have liked to, but from where I'm sitting you've done a helluva lot. Well done! I will absolutely watch the Fusion livestreams when I can - I'm keen to learn the CNC/CAD skillz . I'm somewhat older than you and I was in my 20's when I sat behind a computer for the first time, and only acquired a computer of my own for the first time in 2012, so I have a long way to go. You have a great advantage in having grown up with them. Thanks for the video, for the effort it takes to record and edit them. Much appreciated. Looking forward to watching the livestreams...keep well, mate - best to your fam.
Geoffrey, thank you 🙏🏼 your comment really hit me 🥲 I sincerely appreciate the thought behind and positive reinforcement. It’s easy to forget how lucky I am to be in the position I am in, and always be unsettled until we have achieved certain things.
Your message was grounding and inspirational. Thank you 😁
What type of endmills do you use ,and the coating ? Measurements ,? Santa says you been nice looks like full ball radius ...
Be aware of chatter on speed feed rates especially with micro tools
Blessed you are !
Hi, sorry about the delayed reply. I’m using Micro 100 2 flute endmills AlTiN coated. Yeah I’m working out speeds and feeds, I think I will be using 0.9mm for most of my work
Hi Dean,
It is fabulous to have you back and I can't speak for everyone but I think we would all prefer you not to put yourself under to much pressure and end up disappearing again. Maybe one video a week and build a backlog of videos to release whilst you have momentum, so that when the new baby arrives and you don't feel like making a video you can release one you have in the backlog. Whatever you do is fine with me but make sure you look after yourself and family.
Take care
Paul,,
Thanks so much for this awesome message Paul! I really appreciate it, and your support, especially on live streams. Sorry it took so long to get back to this message. Hopefully see in upcoming livestreams 😁😁
If the Bantam is accurate enough to maintain proper gear depth, I'm buying one. I would have been here earlier but I stopped watching UA-cam watchmakers after seeing people put a movement in a holder dial down and then attacking it with badly dressed tweezers and screwdrivers.
Thanks Robert! Appreciate your comment, sorry about delayed reply. So far so good. I will be doing more testing soon, awaiting some new tooling to arrive 😁
Remember: Family before fans! You don't need to apologise for the demands they have on your time.
That said, it's good to see you excited and positive about your progress.
Thanks, really appreciate your message man. Sorry for delayed reply Russell. Hope you find value in the content 😁
Hi Dean, have you cut teeth on train wheels yet?
Not yet Raj 😁😁
Hi Dean. Your train bridge is effectively a replacement for the existing one. Are you planning on customising it somehow? I'd love a full workshop tour too! Keep up the good work.
Hi Andrew, yes I just wanted to test the precision of the bantam CNC here. Check my latest video for current design of mainplate and bridges 😁
@@DeanDK thanks. The new bridges look great. Have you thought about adding a modification to the movement to allow for a central seconds hand?
@@blueneet84 I'm currently re-doing the mainplate and the bridges. I do want to add complications down the line, after I get the basic watch movement working and completed first. A big draw card for the 6498 movement for me is the sub second. Maybe that will change and I will do a central later.
Really interesting as I’m just starting to learn about watchmaking. Can you recommend any lathes? What sort of tolerances can they achieve?
Nice to see your process again!
Are you using Bantam Pcb Cnc? Is it a good cnc?
Good luck!
Hi Liudas! Sorry about the delayed reply, yes that’s the machine I am using 😁 I feel like for a first personal CNC it’s well designed. But like everything it has it’s limitations. Cheers 😁😁
@@DeanDK It’s got me exciting to see how well you done with this CNC, I’m from UK and I contacted Bantam to buy one too!
Thanks for sharing and good luck with your watch, you definitely get there!
Thanks so much! Wow very cool, good luck with your purchase 😁😁
Thanks for update Dean, congrats on the upcoming new addition to addition to the family. Take care we will see you when we see you
Thanks John! Sorry for the delayed reply! I hope the content is bringing you some value so far this year 😁😁
Awesome work Dean. Huge progress. I look forward to some future collaborations. Cheers from the workbench, Reuben
Cheers Reuben, sorry about the delayed reply. Thanks for the chat man 😁😁😁
Hello friend, do you recommend the BHI distance course? I plan to buy the cowells lathe to star in the course, in this moment I have the pocket nc v2-50 cnc. this machine it's amazing.
Hi Edwin! I highly suggest the BHI distance course. That’s so awesome to hear man. Yeah that machine looks like a beast! Sorry for the delayed reply, I wish you all the success, you can do it man 😁😁😁
When will you start a Patron page? I am sure you will have follows to join in your channel.
Seconded. You said 3 years ago "I don't think I produce enough for people to pay for"... well, why don't you let the viewers decide? This content is really fascinating for some people.
@@peetiegonzalez1845 I don't even know you! I asked the question will he start a Patron page this will allow people who subcribe to his partron page to recieve the videos first if he wants to give out special video content and allow Dean to have an addition income. It was just a question, nothing more, his channel is brilliant likewise with Chris from Clickspring where he has gone down the road of Patron and still produces you tube videos.
@@bazbond6004 lol I was agreeing with you! He should definitely make a patreon page. My comment about "you said 3y ago" was directed at Dean. He has replied to people before saying he doesn't feel worthy. I think it's definitely worthy. Sorry for my confusing reply!
@@peetiegonzalez1845 Oh Ok, we only see him for a short time on the video there must be alot of behind the scenes stuff that we do not see.
@@bazbond6004 Anyway... yes he SHOULD make a Patreon. !!
Pace yourself.. there's no hurry ... Enjoying your videos 🙂
Thanks Super! Really appreciate it, sorry for delayed reply
Really excited for you! Making awesome progress!
Thanks so much Jordan, my apologies for delayed reply. 😁😁
I really enjoy your learning and discovery process. Keep up the good work!
