I feel that Judge Boyd actually cares about the deserving party and often than not, the defendant.

It's a tough thing about DV. It can happen that there's a loud argument, the police get called, and then one of the people involved amplifies the story in the heat of the moment. Angry people have a way of saying a bit more than the truth to the cops, and sometimes a lot more. Come court time, that person has cooled down and recants.
Or it happens the other way: an abused victim recants out of induced emotional dependency on an abuser.
Either way, one end of this was the distorted story and one wasn't -- or possibly, both. The truth is not always readily sorted out. It'd be nice, and much easier, if everyone simply stuck to 'just the facts', but most humans are neither Joe Fridays nor Vulcans.
