@ Joe Black - yes they use the same fluid as the transmission and in fact when you're filing the transmission that fluid "spills" over into the front transfer case.
I hope this isnt the case because Acura sold me 2 different fluids.....the same stuff u used for the diff but for the tranny they sold me Acura fluid ATFDW1 is this incorrect? are they going to mix?
This video was great thank you for taking the time to make it! You saved my differential. Took it to a shop that wasn’t familiar with the car and didn’t know it had 2 chambers on the differential. I took on the job myself and found that the previous owner used the wrong fluid.

I know this is an older video but i comfirmed with Honda Canada themselves that DPFS and Honda Pump Fluid II are EXACTLY the same fluid. The only difference is the bottling and that the service division are allowed to use them interchangeably.

Got the All wheel drive fluid sent from the usa had it in for 900km not a problem no engine loights like honda said would happen.Very happy thank you you can not buy this fluid here only dpsf11
If memory serves me correctly the "typical service" interval is every 60,000 miles or 100,000 kms. I personally don't recommend waiting that long to do a service on the fluid considering what it has to cope with (high pressures from gears and clutches) and the fact there isn't a filtering device of any sort. I personally would service this fluid every 30,000 miles or 50,000 kms. Since you can do it so easily yourself there is no reason why it shouldn't be done sooner to prolong component life.
I received my dpsf &DW1 transmission fluid and will be doing this job on my 2009 RL, which also used atf fluid because the new dpsf fluid had not come out yet. I will be doing a drain and fill on the transmission(about 3qts..X2x1week) Also changing the oil using mobile1 0-20 advanced fuel economy, hey thanks for the video, this gave me the confidence to do this valuable service myself. I have a question and I can’t seem to find the answers on the internet, so I was hoping you can answer it. I’m trying to do a transmission fluid exchange on my 07 RL but all I can find is a transfer case fluid exchange, so my question is, would replacing the fluid on the transfer case be the transmission fluid exchange?
thanks for the tip. I have used brake cleaner to clean up any spilled or excess oil but found that using a rag or some paper towels cleaned up the area reasonably well. Definitely wear gloves as brake cleaner does a number on the skin of your hands! Cheers!

2006 Honda Legend sh-awd (Australian model) drives amazing after removing the red DW-1 transmission fluid and replacing with DPSF all wheel drive fluid thank you .I noticed even slightly better fuel economy,A lot of the honda legends sh-awd must be running the wrong fluid in rear differential .Can not buy the DPSF all wheel drive fluid in Australia have to buy from the us
that is interesting that you don't have access to DPSF fluid in the land down under. I wonder why Honda/Acura would sell a car there that uses that fluid yet doesn't supply your country with the right fluid that is supposed to go in there.
It is crazy how they sell the cars but not the correct fluid In Australia and have to send it over from the USA The Honda dealers want you to put in Dw-1 Transmission fluid.I have ran the DPSF for 5000km now and it has never ran smoother no engine lights better millage

Mines is triggering as well I got car from copart auction and had this b16 code on first start up I ignored it and one day started car and put it in reverse you can hear one of the transmission grinding in gears put it back in park grinding slowly went away tried it again much worse now I'm having to do this to my 2010 Acura RL mileage 156k.. miles
Hi, this is a great video I followed your instruction. I managed to put in 3 quarts but it didn’t drip. I guess it’s up on a ramp. But you said it’s ok as long as I manage to get in 3quarts. Do you have a video on the front atf change? I cannot find the drain bolt for the atf. Also, can I fill the aft on the dip stick hole? I think it’s easier for me to go that route as opposed to removing parts to get to the full hole. It’s my first time doing it so I don’t know where the drain bolt is located. I manage to drain a hypoid gear oil thinking that’s the atf and put atf oil. Do I need to drain it and put dogs oil? Pls advise.
OMG I am falling behind in my responses to my channel. To answer your question - look at my Honda Odyssey transmission fluid change video. The drain plug should be relatively in the same location. To fill the tranny yes you can fill through the dipstick - we did that at the dealership all the time using a specially made (by the shop guys) funnel that would allow us to fill the tranny slowly (but easily) going that route.
The funnel and tubing combination can be made from a funnel and just some basic vinyl tubing you buy at home depot. Nothing complicated about the setup and certainly not expensive to make on your own.

I am going to do the transfer case tomorrow.....my only option is to jack the car up or put it on ramps....do u think I can get the needed amount of fluid in just by jacking one side or the other? Again for the transfer case.....thanks
Here I a quick trick. Insert the fill hose, lower the car and then use a funnel to pour in the fluid to fill it full. When oil starts to trickle out stop filling, jack car back up (and use safety stands) and then get that cap back on snug. If you're slightly under filled it is no big deal.
I am a honda tech, and honda specifically told me not to put DPS-F oil into the diff of the Old Legend wich should have DW1 that replaces the ATF-Z1. On the info it even says, that it wil on the gearbox shift a little stiffer, you could not put DPS-F in the gearbox wich also used the ATF-Z1
So here is an interesting thought... I too was a Honda tech and the RL diff is stamped ATF-Z1 and we were told specifically to NOT put in DW1 and to use DPSF fluid in it. Totally different coloured fluid but since Z1 was discontinued that we were told to use the current fluid that its used in the SH-AWD systems from acura.
Hey. This is a great video. Very informative! I have had my 05 rl for a year now, and aren't they just a sweet ride?!? I've had to be that always had problems Pop up, both mechanically and electronically. The RL has given me 0 issues in 12 months of ownership. My current milage is 104,000. I have seen some forums where they are at315,000. If that is the case I am very excited. ANYWAYS SORRY FOR THE RANT! I was wondering if you have done the brakes? I'm looking into replacing the front pads. Is it true they are Brembo styled?
Luke Roth Hi Luke, the RL if maintained properly will easily clock over 500, 000kms without much issue. The thing I love about the RL is that it doesn't use the VCM technology on newer models (mostly Honda V6s) which means they can be less problematic b/c of the simpler and more traditional design. My little 4 cylinder civic had 520, 000kms when I sold it and to this day it is still running fine on the ORIGINAL automatic transmission! Yes the front pads are very much like brembo style with dual piston calipers. Rather than flipping up the caliper to remove the pads you remove "slide pins" and the pads slide out of an opening in the front of the caliper. Definitely very different brake setup than other Honda's I've worked on.

I am totally confused i want to use DPSF fluid You make a lot of sence what your saying. The honda service centres in Australia say use ATF DW1 which give no protection . I do not think they even even sell DPSF in Australia only DPSF11 the wrong stuff. What will happen if i use the Acura DPSF fluid i have ATF stamped on both chambers Dpsf was not around in 2006 when mine was made regards Down under.
So here's the thing... DPSF fluid came into effect in later model years (I believe in 2008) so anywhere that is stamped ATF for differentials NEEDS to use DPSF. Back in 2006 ATF from Honda was ATF Z1 which is NOT the same as the updated ATF-DW1. Under no circumstances should you be putting ATF-DW1 into the differential. There is a Honda/Acura service bulletin floating around the internet and all the dealerships know to use DPSF fluid in place of ATF-Z1 fluid. The only place that ATF should be installed in your car is the actual automatic transmission.
I performed the rear diff and clutch thing......Some of those plugs are bit difficult to remove but with the right tools ( a hammer ) i got the job done. I was by myself so I rigged my funnel to a ladder with a bunjee cord nice and high....it worked like a champ. I was able to get most of one cort into the diff and 3 quarts into the clutch thing.....My thought is that if I turned every quart bottle upside down and let the residue drain out of weach one that I had already poured.....they would give me that amount that is called for......I mean.....I poured 3 quarts leaving some reside in each bottle so in the end I added 2.80 approx quarts....that was my logic. With the car flat and no top plug in....zero came out.
that's great news that you got things figured out! Car manufacturers are pretty smart when the package their oils and design their cars so that the # of bottles used is even (no partials remaining for the most part). If you're short or over slightly it generally is no biggie.
Hello !Just to make sure that on the Acura RL 2006 there is only one place to change the differential fluid or 2 ?!!! Because I have Subaru Legacy 2002 and it has 2 location to fill. One in the front (next to the airfilter) and one in the rear .Thanks

Hi Wen, yes the procedure is more or less the same on the new 2012 TL. As for the front transfer case just look slightly behind the transmission where the transfer case is (you can tell it is a transfer case b/c the propeller shaft sticks out of the rear of the casing. Somewhere along the side of the transfer case you'll see that there is a drain plug just like the one I demonstrated for the rear differential. It will also use the same 3/8" square ratchet drive drain plug. The transfer case is refilled when the transmission is refilled. I can do a video of this service but not until someone comes to me to actually get it done. Hope that sort of helps.

tansfer case fluid is part of the transmission which is Acura/Honda DW-1 fluid. When I service the RL in this video the front transfer case fluid was transmission oil. What was interesting about draining the transfer case was that after I drained the case out and re-installed the plug I went to drain the actual transmission and when I pulled the tranny plug almost no oil came out which means the transfer case drain plug kills 2 birds with 1 stone. If you want to be absolutely sure there isn't a different fluid needed call Acura and see what they say about the front transfer case fluid. I'll bet you that it is DW-1.

Yes the front differential is shared with the transmission so when you do a tranny oil change that you are effectively changing out the front differential oil.
The plugs are not the same on the TSX. If I remember correctly your generation of TSX should have just 2 plugs on it. One fill and one drain and they're accessed by using a long 3/8" ratchet extension that goes through the rear subframe. Your TSX MUST use the updated Acura DPSF and it will need 2.53 litres. You can easily identify the plugs because they should accept the square drive end of a 3/8" drive ratchet. Just make sure you crack the fill plug open first before you open the drain plug!
Hi does this apply for a 2006 Honda legend KB 3.5L SH-AWD . Australian model made in Japan honda shop are saying use honda hypoid oil in hypoid chamber and Dw-1 in clutch chamber .(replacing ATF-Z1). I think there wrong i think DPSF All Wheel Drive Fluid in both chambers it has ATF on Hypoid chamber housing .Honda said the 2006 legend is a earlyer model and do not put in DPSF your advice would be most appreciated.
I would follow what Acura is telling you since different markets can potentially use different fluid types. Stick with what the Honda engineers have designed it for unless the dealership tells you it has been superseded.

Generally speaking I find the maintenance minder fairly good dummying it down for car owners so that its easy to understand and that you don't forget to service the car. If you run it up to the maintenance interval you're probably going to be a-ok. If you're anal retentive like I am then do it sooner. My rule of thumb on the honda trannys that use the ATF z1 or the ATF DW1 fluid for example should be changed at 60, 000kms not the typical 90, 000kms that honda recommends. Differential and transfer case are the same, do it at 60, 000kms and I promise you that you will NEVER have a problem related to fluid breakdown. Fluid maintenance is fairly inexpensive and is cheap insurance to ensure your car is getting the proper lubrication.
***** no there definitely isn't as the likely target market for this model of car probably take it to the dealership for service and generally aren't the DIY folks like some of us :)
Great video of the Accura/Legend diff fluid change - had I seen it before attempting a fluid change I would not have suffered a complete diff failure 2 weeks later! Have you got a video or advice regarding the replacement of the diff assembly please? I am in the U.K. my local Honda dealer is no help, I have found a decent used diff and with my friendly, experienced mechanic we plan to attempt the replacement. Mine is a 2007 KB1 3.5 with all the bits - LKAS, CDMBS etc. thanks again, hope you can help. Rodger
@@rodgerholcombe5785 i just chatted with Honda. (Website) And they said, no to DW-1 and that Dual Pump 2 is the old version (same fluid according to the rep) as Acura DPSF. Im not 100% sure. We’ve got DP 2 in Argentina but not DPSF. I would need to import it.

I have seen few videos where people only opened rear diff 2 bolts, but there was no mention of other 2(clutch assembly) bolts. Could it be that MDX/TL have a different setup?
Yes possibly. Its been a while since I've last worked on a AWD system so my memory is a bit spotty these days on where the plugs are and the driveline components.
what size is the tube 1 1/2 ....2in ? what fits in the fill holes im going to start replacemernt....but going to purchase material....... also the same oil for both cambers correct?
***** hmm, I'd go with a small 3/8" hose. The hole isn't very large at all so a small hose is all you need. The fluid is the same for the rear diff front and rear fill plug.

You replied yes...and mentioned that when u fill the tranny it spills over into the transfer case......yikes!!! Acura sold me 2 different fluids.....one was the same as you used for the rear diff and the fluid for the tranny was Acura ATFDW1 are these going to mix and is that a bad thing???????

I just replaced what i believed to be the transfer case up front which is pretty far back from the front of the car and only takes about a half a quart of special fluid. If there is a front diff as well.....heck I havent found that one yet.
The front diff is actually part of the tranny and that is filled at the same time as your tranny. In the transfer gear box where the rear driveshaft exits from the front and goes to the rear diff that there is a small tiny amount of hypoid gear oil that goes in there. So what you did should be correct. Rear diff/transfer case uses DPSF, front diff is at fluid, front power transfer case is hypoid gear oil. Does that make sense
Sorry I didn't see this earlier. UA-cam has this bad habit of not putting replies to the top of in my comment list. I'm probably way too late to say this but I will anyways. Absolutely not for the differentials. You can use max life in the transmission but the diffs MUST used either the old ATF-Z1 or the DPSF fluid. Do not attempt to use ATF-DW1 (the current version of Honda's ATF fluid) in the diff. It doesn't have the proper viscosity/anti friction whatever it is in the fluid to make the diffs work right. If you put max life in then you gotta get it out and put in the right fluid for the differential.
No I can’t say that I remember seeing plastic seals under my caps. You’re referring to the drain and fill plugs correct? Do you have a photo of it that you can share?

+Nathan Scheidler Hi Nathan, the dealership can confirm the quantity of fluid you need. For the front transmission/transfer case/diff use Acura DW-1 fluid (use only genuine Acura Honda fluid). For the rear differential use only Acura DPSF fluid and NOT transmission fluid. DPSF is a relatively new formulation of rear differential fluid that is meant specifically to be used in the Acura SH-AWD system.

My book also says to NOT USE ATF for the power steering fluid, is this where and when I use that dpsf fluid? Kinda confusing on their part not urs! piercedasia I go to the Acura dealership here in San Antonio to get the fluids, even for the washer fluid, I like to keep the same fluids that it came with from the factory so getting the correct fluids is not an issue. It's just which ones are the correct fluids for the correct parts it suppose to be applied too. Ima car guy, I try to know about cars but I don't know as much as I would like to, specially when it comes to basic maintenance like the fluids and other things. Also I had a 07 tl right before this rl, it had 63,000k used and that book said to use the dw-1 for the tranny, it was the front wheel drive not the type s sh-awd? Is this y the two different fluids for the RL and did the tl take the dw-1 for it's power steering fluid or all the transfer cases? Ud think they would use the same fluids for all that required that the of fluid. Well if so then I need to go get the 4 cases of the dpsf fluid and the washer, correct and thats all? Please respond, gonna do it myself cuz ur video was so easy lookn, and I don't wanna spend up to $300 specially since I'm jobless right now. I have my oil already with filter and it came with the washer. I have footage of the transmission oil change for an RL BUT the problem is that it was poorly recorded. It is super easy actually. Just follow my Honda Odyssey transmission oil change video. They're fundamentally the same transmission. Just make sure that you familiarize yourself will the fill plug and drain plug on yours BEFORE starting the work as the drain plug location is going to be slightly different.
It depends on the driving conditions you subject your car to. Personally given how inexpensive the fluid is I would do it every 30, 000 miles. If you're easy on your car (say, lots of highway driving in moderate temperatures) you CAN stretch it out to 60, 000 miles. Here in Canada our cars are subjected to extreme conditions. We get hot summers and very cold winters and where I am, we get snow as well which puts extra strain on the AWD system. 30, 000 mile is a fool proof service interval that will almost guarantee that your fluid will likely not deteriorate to the point of offering no protection.

Not quite. Rear diff is the rear diff. At the front there is the transmission/front diff and then there is also a separate transfer case that is just ahead of the rear propeller shaft.

I am new to 4WD and to 2nd gen RL specifically. So how is "differential" different from "transfer case". I was looking to purchase an extended warranty but one of the companies has: Transfer Unit (4x4) as covered item and the other company has same Transfer case and also a mention of a Differential. Aren't these the same thing?
differential is what ties the left and right tires and axles together. Differentials can differ (no pun intended) in how they behave when transferring power from one tire to the other. A transfer case is what transfers power from the transmission to the rear differential. Using your RL as the example, you have a rear and front differential and you have a transfer case that takes the output from the transmission and transfers it to the rear differential. The transfer case has a series of gears and clutches in it to allow the car's computer to modulate the amount of power it needs to transfer to the rear drive system. Under normal driving circumstances 90% of the power is at the front wheels but when slippage occurs that the traction control computer will know how much "clutch" force is needed to put power to the rear wheels. Hope that makes sense.

The next time you do this service use some brake cleaner to dry up the excess fluid around the drain areas quickly, please remember to use nitrile gloves at harborfreight: 7 mil Nitrile Gloves Powder-Free X-Large 50 Pc
specific to the RL or in general? I don't have a vehicle that I can specifically demo the wiring on BUT I could probably create a flow chart diagram of how a "typical" wiring configuration would look. Let me know and I'll try my best to do a vid on it.

Check out my honda Odyssey tranny oil change and watch it completely from start to finish and look for the same drain plug and fill plug on your car. ALWAYS make sure you're able to locate and remove the fill plug FIRST before you ever drain the transmission. The Honda Odyssey and the Acura RL procedure is almost identical (most Honda's are). The difference is the RL has a huge black plastic under cover assembly that needs to be unbolted (bunch of 10 mm screws if memory serves me correctly). Take the cover off and you'll see the drain bolt by it's signature "square" drive hole.
no not at all. Definitely change it. Refresh me here but isn't the 06 TL a FWD only car? If it is then all you need to do is change the transmission fluid as the front diff fluid would be part of the tranny oil.
I tend to stick with the Honda ATF DW-1 as it is the oil that Honda recommends and uses at the dealerships. Since your car is a 2005 it would've come from the factory filled with ATF-Z1 which some may argue could be better for the transmission while others don't agree. Either way a safe bet would be to use the Honda approved fluid. If you don't have easy access to the Honda ATF fluid then you could always go and use the Valvoline Maxlife synthetic ATF fluid as my experiences with it have been nothing but good.
Update: Bernardi Acura, online, subbed the DPSF with Honda dual pump fluid 2 on my recent order. My understanding is the part number ends in 'A' because it is marketed for Acura.
so it turns out that DPSF IS dual pump fluid II. Honda and Acura have both confirmed they're substitutes (but really the same) for each other. Sneaky....
So I went to the dealer to get the Dual Pump II fluid for my '19 HR-V. They told me there is a shortage and they are using DPSF fluid instead. Can someone explain this?
There has been much chatter about the differences between dual pump fluid II and DPSF. When I used to work at honda they were distinctly two different fluids as we often serviced Acuras and we were always told to use DPSF and to not interchange it with DP II. Given that I'm not a fluid engineer that I am not in a position to say that you can substitute one over the other. If Honda screws up your car its on them to fix it. I wouldn't do it a customer's car.
+jay hill The RL drives very good and passing power isn't an issue as the motor if memory serves me correctly makes over 300HP. The car is definitely heavier than other Acura sedans b/c there are so many luxury touches that are included in the RL making the car naturally heavier thus "slower". I have no complaints over the car and actually prefer it over a TLX. It is smoother, quieter and more refined for comfort than it is all about performance. I think the best way to know is take one out for a test drive as each persons interpretation of performance and luxury is very subjective.

Ok so let's see, mines a 10 rl sh-awd, the Manuel says to use atf-z1 for the automatic transmission fluid and for the REAR differential fluid. But in ur video u said to use dpsf fluid, which is the all-wheel drive fluid. Guy in parts said that the z1 and another type fluid (don remember what fluid he said it was, cuz I showed him the pic of my Manuel and that was his response.) the same thing? Now u said the hypoid gear oil gets that same dpsf fluid as the rear differentiaTl? Now my Manuel says the sh-awd differential case takes .77 us quarts (.73 liters.) and the sh-awd clutch case takes 2.8 quarts (2.7 liters) of the atf-z1 fluid. But when it comes to the hypoid gear oil, it says, SAE 90 or SAE 80w-90 viscosity hypoid gear oil, api service classifies GL4 OR GL5 ONLY, but under the transfer assembly fluid sub-column? Kinda confusing. My b16 service is up, got the car use with 62,000k on it. Dont know if service had ever been done so I'm gonna do it, rear differential change I mean. But in the comments u said the tranny, and FRONT Trans are the same fluids
ATF-z1 is used in the transmission and the front transfer case because that is what came from the factory. That front transfer case and transmission fluid has been SUPERSEDED by Honda ATF-DW1 full synthetic tranny fluid. Why? Because Z1 was too thin and offered too little protection and viscosity stability for today's advanced transmissions. As for the rear, it once came filled with ATF-Z1 as well but has been SUPERSEDED by Acura DPSF fluid which is a heavier weight oil for the rear diff. That is ALL you should only be using in your Acura RL. Guy in parts saying to use Z1 is on drugs. In Canada you can't even buy it anymore b/c it's been replaced and DPSF fluid is DEFINITELY for the rear. I haven't worked on the RL for a VERY long time and I can't remember what it looks like underneath anymore but my general information here is correct as of 2017 specs.
yea i put the dpsf in the rear diff. i havent done the tranny or the front transfer case yet but i will soon, with dw1 fluid. how many drain/fill plugs is there for that? is it still that stupid 3/8 ratchet drive head. when u said ud need a breaker bar, u wasnt lieing. torqued one 3/8 3 in extension, and torqued 3 seperate ratches almost completly in half
Ben Alexander From what I’ve read it’s as follows: dpsf for differential, DW1 for transmission, and gear oil for transfer case. Can’t recall the weight for the transfer I believe 80w90? Look that up.
It is hard to say. It can be fluid related but it is likely sensor related as the light comes on when there is a mismatch in input and output shaft rotational speeds. Are all your tires the same size and properly inflated and are all wearing evenly?

@ Joe Black - yes they use the same fluid as the transmission and in fact when you're filing the transmission that fluid "spills" over into the front transfer case.
I hope this isnt the case because Acura sold me 2 different fluids.....the same stuff u used for the diff but for the tranny they sold me Acura fluid ATFDW1 is this incorrect? are they going to mix?

I know this is an older video but i comfirmed with Honda Canada themselves that DPFS and Honda Pump Fluid II are EXACTLY the same fluid. The only difference is the bottling and that the service division are allowed to use them interchangeably.

Got the All wheel drive fluid sent from the usa had it in for 900km not a problem no engine loights like honda said would happen.Very happy thank you you can not buy this fluid here only dpsf11

If memory serves me correctly the "typical service" interval is every 60,000 miles or 100,000 kms. I personally don't recommend waiting that long to do a service on the fluid considering what it has to cope with (high pressures from gears and clutches) and the fact there isn't a filtering device of any sort. I personally would service this fluid every 30,000 miles or 50,000 kms. Since you can do it so easily yourself there is no reason why it shouldn't be done sooner to prolong component life.

I received my dpsf &DW1 transmission fluid and will be doing this job on my 2009 RL, which also used atf fluid because the new dpsf fluid had not come out yet. I will be doing a drain and fill on the transmission(about 3qts..X2x1week) Also changing the oil using mobile1 0-20 advanced fuel economy, hey thanks for the video, this gave me the confidence to do this valuable service myself. I have a question and I can’t seem to find the answers on the internet, so I was hoping you can answer it. I’m trying to do a transmission fluid exchange on my 07 RL but all I can find is a transfer case fluid exchange, so my question is, would replacing the fluid on the transfer case be the transmission fluid exchange?
thanks for the tip. I have used brake cleaner to clean up any spilled or excess oil but found that using a rag or some paper towels cleaned up the area reasonably well. Definitely wear gloves as brake cleaner does a number on the skin of your hands! Cheers!

Yes jack stands are super important. Don't fix your car without them as a jack can fail at any moment and crush you.

Torque spec for drain bolt is typically about 25-35 ft lbs. Not very tight at all - hand tight at the most.

Mines is triggering as well I got car from copart auction and had this b16 code on first start up I ignored it and one day started car and put it in reverse you can hear one of the transmission grinding in gears put it back in park grinding slowly went away tried it again much worse now I'm having to do this to my 2010 Acura RL mileage 156k.. miles
Hi, this is a great video I followed your instruction. I managed to put in 3 quarts but it didn’t drip. I guess it’s up on a ramp. But you said it’s ok as long as I manage to get in 3quarts. Do you have a video on the front atf change? I cannot find the drain bolt for the atf. Also, can I fill the aft on the dip stick hole? I think it’s easier for me to go that route as opposed to removing parts to get to the full hole. It’s my first time doing it so I don’t know where the drain bolt is located. I manage to drain a hypoid gear oil thinking that’s the atf and put atf oil. Do I need to drain it and put dogs oil? Pls advise.
OMG I am falling behind in my responses to my channel. To answer your question - look at my Honda Odyssey transmission fluid change video. The drain plug should be relatively in the same location. To fill the tranny yes you can fill through the dipstick - we did that at the dealership all the time using a specially made (by the shop guys) funnel that would allow us to fill the tranny slowly (but easily) going that route.

It will be VERY similar. The plug locations and fluid quantities will likely be different.
The funnel and tubing combination can be made from a funnel and just some basic vinyl tubing you buy at home depot.
Nothing complicated about the setup and certainly not expensive to make on your own.

I am going to do the transfer case tomorrow.....my only option is to jack the car up or put it on ramps....do u think I can get the needed amount of fluid in just by jacking one side or the other? Again for the transfer case.....thanks
Here I a quick trick. Insert the fill hose, lower the car and then use a funnel to pour in the fluid to fill it full. When oil starts to trickle out stop filling, jack car back up (and use safety stands) and then get that cap back on snug. If you're slightly under filled it is no big deal.
I am a honda tech, and honda specifically told me not to put DPS-F oil into the diff of the Old Legend wich should have DW1 that replaces the ATF-Z1. On the info it even says, that it wil on the gearbox shift a little stiffer, you could not put DPS-F in the gearbox wich also used the ATF-Z1
So here is an interesting thought... I too was a Honda tech and the RL diff is stamped ATF-Z1 and we were told specifically to NOT put in DW1 and to use DPSF fluid in it. Totally different coloured fluid but since Z1 was discontinued that we were told to use the current fluid that its used in the SH-AWD systems from acura.
Hey. This is a great video. Very informative! I have had my 05 rl for a year now, and aren't they just a sweet ride?!? I've had to be that always had problems Pop up, both mechanically and electronically. The RL has given me 0 issues in 12 months of ownership. My current milage is 104,000. I have seen some forums where they are at315,000. If that is the case I am very excited. ANYWAYS SORRY FOR THE RANT! I was wondering if you have done the brakes? I'm looking into replacing the front pads. Is it true they are Brembo styled?
Luke Roth Hi Luke, the RL if maintained properly will easily clock over 500, 000kms without much issue. The thing I love about the RL is that it doesn't use the VCM technology on newer models (mostly Honda V6s) which means they can be less problematic b/c of the simpler and more traditional design. My little 4 cylinder civic had 520, 000kms when I sold it and to this day it is still running fine on the ORIGINAL automatic transmission!
Yes the front pads are very much like brembo style with dual piston calipers. Rather than flipping up the caliper to remove the pads you remove "slide pins" and the pads slide out of an opening in the front of the caliper. Definitely very different brake setup than other Honda's I've worked on.

What will happen if i use the Acura DPSF fluid i have ATF stamped on both chambers Dpsf was not around in 2006 when mine was made regards Down under.
So here's the thing... DPSF fluid came into effect in later model years (I believe in 2008) so anywhere that is stamped ATF for differentials NEEDS to use DPSF. Back in 2006 ATF from Honda was ATF Z1 which is NOT the same as the updated ATF-DW1. Under no circumstances should you be putting ATF-DW1 into the differential. There is a Honda/Acura service bulletin floating around the internet and all the dealerships know to use DPSF fluid in place of ATF-Z1 fluid.
The only place that ATF should be installed in your car is the actual automatic transmission.
I performed the rear diff and clutch thing......Some of those plugs are bit difficult to remove but with the right tools ( a hammer ) i got the job done. I was by myself so I rigged my funnel to a ladder with a bunjee cord nice and high....it worked like a champ. I was able to get most of one cort into the diff and 3 quarts into the clutch thing.....My thought is that if I turned every quart bottle upside down and let the residue drain out of weach one that I had already poured.....they would give me that amount that is called for......I mean.....I poured 3 quarts leaving some reside in each bottle so in the end I added 2.80 approx quarts....that was my logic. With the car flat and no top plug in....zero came out.
that's great news that you got things figured out! Car manufacturers are pretty smart when the package their oils and design their cars so that the # of bottles used is even (no partials remaining for the most part). If you're short or over slightly it generally is no biggie.

On the Acura rear diff there is a single drain (bottom of diff) and a single full plug. As long as you follow my vid you'll be fine.

Hi Wen, yes the procedure is more or less the same on the new 2012 TL. As for the front transfer case just look slightly behind the transmission where the transfer case is (you can tell it is a transfer case b/c the propeller shaft sticks out of the rear of the casing. Somewhere along the side of the transfer case you'll see that there is a drain plug just like the one I demonstrated for the rear differential. It will also use the same 3/8" square ratchet drive drain plug. The transfer case is refilled when the transmission is refilled. I can do a video of this service but not until someone comes to me to actually get it done.

tansfer case fluid is part of the transmission which is Acura/Honda DW-1 fluid.
When I service the RL in this video the front transfer case fluid was transmission oil. What was interesting about draining the transfer case was that after I drained the case out and re-installed the plug I went to drain the actual transmission and when I pulled the tranny plug almost no oil came out which means the transfer case drain plug kills 2 birds with 1 stone. If you want to be absolutely sure there isn't a different fluid needed call Acura and see what they say about the front transfer case fluid. I'll bet you that it is DW-1.

Yes the front differential is shared with the transmission so when you do a tranny oil change that you are effectively changing out the front differential oil.
So the front transfer case uses the same fluid as the transmission?

The plugs are not the same on the TSX. If I remember correctly your generation of TSX should have just 2 plugs on it. One fill and one drain and they're accessed by using a long 3/8" ratchet extension that goes through the rear subframe. Your TSX MUST use the updated Acura DPSF and it will need 2.53 litres. You can easily identify the plugs because they should accept the square drive end of a 3/8" drive ratchet. Just make sure you crack the fill plug open first before you open the drain plug!
Hi does this apply for a 2006 Honda legend KB 3.5L SH-AWD . Australian model made in Japan honda shop are saying use honda hypoid oil in hypoid chamber and Dw-1 in clutch chamber .(replacing ATF-Z1). I think there wrong i think DPSF All Wheel Drive Fluid in both chambers it has ATF on Hypoid chamber housing .Honda said the 2006 legend is a earlyer model and do not put in DPSF your advice would be most appreciated.
I would follow what Acura is telling you since different markets can potentially use different fluid types. Stick with what the Honda engineers have designed it for unless the dealership tells you it has been superseded.

Do you recommend following the maintenance minder for fluid changes for the transmission, differential and transfer case?
Generally speaking I find the maintenance minder fairly good dummying it down for car owners so that its easy to understand and that you don't forget to service the car. If you run it up to the maintenance interval you're probably going to be a-ok. If you're anal retentive like I am then do it sooner. My rule of thumb on the honda trannys that use the ATF z1 or the ATF DW1 fluid for example should be changed at 60, 000kms not the typical 90, 000kms that honda recommends. Differential and transfer case are the same, do it at 60, 000kms and I promise you that you will NEVER have a problem related to fluid breakdown. Fluid maintenance is fairly inexpensive and is cheap insurance to ensure your car is getting the proper lubrication.
Also on the net theres not much on the Acura RL 2005

Great video of the Accura/Legend diff fluid change - had I seen it before attempting a fluid change I would not have suffered a complete diff failure 2 weeks later! Have you got a video or advice regarding the replacement of the diff assembly please? I am in the U.K. my local Honda dealer is no help, I have found a decent used diff and with my friendly, experienced mechanic we plan to attempt the replacement. Mine is a 2007 KB1 3.5 with all the bits - LKAS, CDMBS etc.

I have seen few videos where people only opened rear diff 2 bolts, but there was no mention of other 2(clutch assembly) bolts. Could it be that MDX/TL have a different setup?
Yes possibly. Its been a while since I've last worked on a AWD system so my memory is a bit spotty these days on where the plugs are and the driveline components.
what size is the tube 1 1/2 ....2in ? what fits in the fill holes im going to start replacemernt....but going to purchase material....... also the same oil for both cambers correct?
***** hmm, I'd go with a small 3/8" hose. The hole isn't very large at all so a small hose is all you need. The fluid is the same for the rear diff front and rear fill plug.

You replied yes...and mentioned that when u fill the tranny it spills over into the transfer case......yikes!!! I just replaced what i believed to be the transfer case up front which is pretty far back from the front of the car and only takes about a half a quart of special fluid. If there is a front diff as well.....heck I havent found that one yet.
The front diff is actually part of the tranny and that is filled at the same time as your tranny. In the transfer gear box where the rear driveshaft exits from the front and goes to the rear diff that there is a small tiny amount of hypoid gear oil that goes in there. So what you did should be correct. Rear diff/transfer case uses DPSF, front diff is at fluid, front power transfer case is hypoid gear oil. Does that make sense

Sorry I didn't see this earlier. UA-cam has this bad habit of not putting replies to the top of in my comment list. I'm probably way too late to say this but I will anyways. Absolutely not for the differentials. You can use max life in the transmission but the diffs MUST used either the old ATF-Z1 or the DPSF fluid. Do not attempt to use ATF-DW1 (the current version of Honda's ATF fluid) in the diff. It doesn't have the proper viscosity/anti friction whatever it is in the fluid to make the diffs work right. If you put max life in then you gotta get it out and put in the right fluid for the differential.

No I can’t say that I remember seeing plastic seals under my caps. You’re referring to the drain and fill plugs correct? Do you have a photo of it that you can share?

+Nathan Scheidler Hi Nathan, the dealership can confirm the quantity of fluid you need. For the front transmission/transfer case/diff use Acura DW-1 fluid (use only genuine Acura Honda fluid). For the rear differential use only Acura DPSF fluid and NOT transmission fluid. DPSF is a relatively new formulation of rear differential fluid that is meant specifically to be used in the Acura SH-AWD system.
piercedasian u said for the front tranny,transfer,and or differential fluid use dw-1, so I can't even use the atf-z1 for those fluids? My book also says to NOT USE ATF for the power steering fluid, is this where and when I use that dpsf fluid? Kinda confusing on their part not urs! So let's see If I get it right, so the front cases and tranny get regular ATF fluid(rather it be atf-z1 or the ATF dw1, again my book calls for the z1)? And the REAR DIFFERENTIAL gets the all-wheel drive fluid dpsf right? So front an back get 2 completely different fluids?
piercedasia I go to the Acura dealership here in San Antonio to get the fluids, even for the washer fluid, I like to keep the same fluids that it came with from the factory so getting the correct fluids is not an issue. It's just which ones are the correct fluids for the correct parts it suppose to be applied too. Ima car guy, I try to know about cars but I don't know as much as I would like to, specially when it comes to basic maintenance like the fluids and other things. Also I had a 07 tl right before this rl, it had 63,000k used and that book said to use the dw-1 for the tranny, it was the front wheel drive not the type s sh-awd? Is this y the two different fluids for the RL and did the tl take the dw-1 for it's power steering fluid or all the transfer cases? Ud think they would use the same fluids for all that required that the of fluid. Well if so then I need to go get the 4 cases of the dpsf fluid and the washer, correct and thats all? Please respond, gonna do it myself cuz ur video was so easy lookn, and I don't wanna spend up to $300 specially since I'm jobless right now. I have my oil already with filter and it came with the washer. I have the fluids for power steering, washer, brake, transmission (z1 and dw1, for RL and dw1 for the tl) basically all the fluids for the car, antifreeze all of them. They are the same ones that are in your video, the Acura ones. Not the genuine Honda bottles, the gray Acura bottles
Do you have a video on how to change transmission fuel on 2006 and up RL?
I have footage of the transmission oil change for an RL BUT the problem is that it was poorly recorded. It is super easy actually. Just follow my Honda Odyssey transmission oil change video. They're fundamentally the same transmission. Just make sure that you familiarize yourself will the fill plug and drain plug on yours BEFORE starting the work as the drain plug location is going to be slightly different.
So the change intervals on diff fluid are 31,000 to 62,000 miles?
It depends on the driving conditions you subject your car to. Personally given how inexpensive the fluid is I would do it every 30, 000 miles. If you're easy on your car (say, lots of highway driving in moderate temperatures) you CAN stretch it out to 60, 000 miles. Here in Canada our cars are subjected to extreme conditions. We get hot summers and very cold winters and where I am, we get snow as well which puts extra strain on the AWD system. 30, 000 mile is a fool proof service interval that will almost guarantee that your fluid will likely not deteriorate to the point of offering no protection.
In this car is their 2 separate locations for transfer case/rear differential case or are they the same thing.I have a 2005 rl and I’m wondering 💭 thanks
Not quite. Rear diff is the rear diff. At the front there is the transmission/front diff and then there is also a separate transfer case that is just ahead of the rear propeller shaft.

I am new to 4WD and to 2nd gen RL specifically. So how is "differential" different from "transfer case". I was looking to purchase an extended warranty but one of the companies has: Transfer Unit (4x4) as covered item and the other company has same Transfer case and also a mention of a Differential. Aren't these the same thing?
differential is what ties the left and right tires and axles together. Differentials can differ (no pun intended) in how they behave when transferring power from one tire to the other. A transfer case is what transfers power from the transmission to the rear differential. Using your RL as the example, you have a rear and front differential and you have a transfer case that takes the output from the transmission and transfers it to the rear differential. The transfer case has a series of gears and clutches in it to allow the car's computer to modulate the amount of power it needs to transfer to the rear drive system. Under normal driving circumstances 90% of the power is at the front wheels but when slippage occurs that the traction control computer will know how much "clutch" force is needed to put power to the rear wheels. Hope that makes sense.
@@piercedasian Wow, thank you for an explanation. Looks like diff is doing its thing and transfer case has its own responsibilities. So the rear differential and transfer case need their fluids changed at specified intervals as other components such as transmission?

specific to the RL or in general? I don't have a vehicle that I can specifically demo the wiring on BUT I could probably create a flow chart diagram of how a "typical" wiring configuration would look.

Pierce do u have any info on tranny fluid change? and any overall maintenance info for a 2005 Acura RL with 165k miles.
Check out my honda Odyssey tranny oil change and watch it completely from start to finish and look for the same drain plug and fill plug on your car. ALWAYS make sure you're able to locate and remove the fill plug FIRST before you ever drain the transmission. The Honda Odyssey and the Acura RL procedure is almost identical (most Honda's are). The difference is the RL has a huge black plastic under cover assembly that needs to be unbolted (bunch of 10 mm screws if memory serves me correctly). Take the cover off and you'll see the drain bolt by it's signature "square" drive hole.

no not at all. Definitely change it. Refresh me here but isn't the 06 TL a FWD only car? If it is then all you need to do is change the transmission fluid as the front diff fluid would be part of the tranny oil.

What type of oil should I use on my Acura TL 2005 Front wheel drive, automatic transmission?
I tend to stick with the Honda ATF DW-1 as it is the oil that Honda recommends and uses at the dealerships. Since your car is a 2005 it would've come from the factory filled with ATF-Z1 which some may argue could be better for the transmission while others don't agree. Either way a safe bet would be to use the Honda approved fluid. If you don't have easy access to the Honda ATF fluid then you could always go and use the Valvoline Maxlife synthetic ATF fluid as my experiences with it have been nothing but good.
My dealer been charging 140 for the transfer case and 90 for the diff. Is this procedure the same for an 2010 Acura RL? (Last year with the 5 speed)

Update: Bernardi Acura, online, subbed the DPSF with Honda dual pump fluid 2 on my recent order. My understanding is the part number ends in 'A' because it is marketed for Acura.
so it turns out that DPSF IS dual pump fluid II. Honda and Acura have both confirmed they're substitutes (but really the same) for each other. Sneaky....
So I went to the dealer to get the Dual Pump II fluid for my '19 HR-V. They told me there is a shortage and they are using DPSF fluid instead. Can someone explain this?
There has been much chatter about the differences between dual pump fluid II and DPSF. When I used to work at honda they were distinctly two different fluids as we often serviced Acuras and we were always told to use DPSF and to not interchange it with DP II. Given that I'm not a fluid engineer that I am not in a position to say that you can substitute one over the other. If Honda screws up your car its on them to fix it. I wouldn't do it a customer's car.

+jay hill The RL drives very good and passing power isn't an issue as the motor if memory serves me correctly makes over 300HP. The car is definitely heavier than other Acura sedans b/c there are so many luxury touches that are included in the RL making the car naturally heavier thus "slower".
I have no complaints over the car and actually prefer it over a TLX. It is smoother, quieter and more refined for comfort than it is all about performance. I think the best way to know is take one out for a test drive as each persons interpretation of performance and luxury is very subjective.
Sounds..good I have been researching for weeks on them and I will be in the market for one soon. I love the tech the car has , Just hope I will be making the right choice because I plan on keeping for a long time.
oh my god yes I love my RL the only way I can describe it is it's like BUTTER it drives soo smooth and soft but it has a good deal of power. it's beautiful it's one of my dream cars .. the top lol
yeah the RL is a nice ride and they can be had for relatively little money as compared to when they were new.

Ok so let's see, mines a 10 rl sh-awd, the Manuel says to use atf-z1 for the automatic transmission fluid and for the REAR differential fluid. But in ur video u said to use dpsf fluid, which is the all-wheel drive fluid. Guy in parts said that the z1 and another type fluid (don remember what fluid he said it was, cuz I showed him the pic of my Manuel and that was his response.) the same thing? Now u said the hypoid gear oil gets that same dpsf fluid as the rear differentiaTl? Now my Manuel says the sh-awd differential case takes .77 us quarts (.73 liters.) and the sh-awd clutch case takes 2.8 quarts (2.7 liters) of the atf-z1 fluid. But when it comes to the hypoid gear oil, it says, SAE 90 or SAE 80w-90 viscosity hypoid gear oil, api service classifies GL4 OR GL5 ONLY, but under the transfer assembly fluid sub-column? Kinda confusing. My b16 service is up, got the car use with 62,000k on it. Dont know if service had ever been done so I'm gonna do it, rear differential change I mean. But in the comments u said the tranny, and FRONT Trans are the same fluids
ATF-z1 is used in the transmission and the front transfer case because that is what came from the factory. That front transfer case and transmission fluid has been SUPERSEDED by Honda ATF-DW1 full synthetic tranny fluid. Why? Because Z1 was too thin and offered too little protection and viscosity stability for today's advanced transmissions. As for the rear, it once came filled with ATF-Z1 as well but has been SUPERSEDED by Acura DPSF fluid which is a heavier weight oil for the rear diff.
That is ALL you should only be using in your Acura RL. Guy in parts saying to use Z1 is on drugs. In Canada you can't even buy it anymore b/c it's been replaced and DPSF fluid is DEFINITELY for the rear.
I haven't worked on the RL for a VERY long time and I can't remember what it looks like underneath anymore but my general information here is correct as of 2017 specs.
yea i put the dpsf in the rear diff. i havent done the tranny or the front transfer case yet but i will soon, with dw1 fluid. how many drain/fill plugs is there for that? is it still that stupid 3/8 ratchet drive head. when u said ud need a breaker bar, u wasnt lieing. torqued one 3/8 3 in extension, and torqued 3 seperate ratches almost completly in half
Ben Alexander From what I’ve read it’s as follows: dpsf for differential, DW1 for transmission, and gear oil for transfer case. Can’t recall the weight for the transfer I believe 80w90? Look that up.
My sh awd drive light comes on when I'm driving I wonder what the issue
It is hard to say. It can be fluid related but it is likely sensor related as the light comes on when there is a mismatch in input and output shaft rotational speeds. Are all your tires the same size and properly inflated and are all wearing evenly?
@@piercedasian the light comes on soon as I go pass 35 and it stops for a second and then pick up and the light sh-AWD stays on the tires sensor light comes on to
