I do it the same, but since it's only 0.45 quarts, the hand pump wasn't a bid deal. The rear differential holds several quarts, so exchanging the VTM-4 fluid using the hand pump took a while. Also, I prefer to remove the fill bolt entirely and confirm no loss of gear oil. It will also allow faster draining. Small point: The washers are not locking; they are crush washers.
@@SLCGlobalGlass I forget, but I just went to Acura to insure getting the right sizes. They are way overpriced, but it was for my father's MDX, and he likely will sell the vehicle before it needs to be done again. I bought a 10 pack of them on Amazon for my Civic's transmission drain plug, which is what I think you desire to do. Any Acura dealer parts dept have it on their computer and should give you the sizes.
@@mikew1368 thanks for the reply, yeah I probably will end up calling the dealer again. I just did the transmission fluid, went to the dealer to get fluid along with the washers. Yes, they definitely are way overpriced lol. It was ridiculous, but I plan to just buy an assortment of washers, and hopefully will have the correct size when I do it. If not then I guess I’ll be running to a store real quick to find one during.
That's right slave admit the injustice, the problem or faults then say lol but my slaved out mind, heart and wallet controlled ass bought the overpriced supplies regardless. Thanks I am glad you like my series. I could not find a factory service manual for the 2017 MDX. I contacted the Acura dealership and asked the service department what gear oil or fluid is used for a 2017 MDX transfer case. They said that Hypoid gear oil is what you need. The service department said its an 80w-90 hypoid gear oil. It's a heavier weight compared to the older MDX. I would just stop by you nearest Acura dealership and they can easily set you up. That's what I did. They sold me all the crush washers and fluids to complete the entire drive train fluid exchange.
Brother, locate the rear differential under your vehicle. The driveshaft should be connected to the rear differential. Follow that same driveshaft to the other end towards the front of the vehicle. The transfer case is the assembly should be connected to the front end of the driveshaft.
Is that crush washer from transfer case(front of the engine) different size from rear differential case? what are the sizes and can you tell me please how many of the sizes I need ?thanks
I am sorry but I cant remember the sizes, I did this video quite a while ago. From what I remember there were 2 different washer sizes. You can contact your local Honda or Acura dealership. I purchased all the washers directly from the local Acura dealership. Hope that helps, good luck!
The transfer case takes power from the transmission and distributes it to the front and rear axles on AWD vehicles. The transmission fluid is different. The fill bolt for the transmission is accessed from the engine compartment, and its drain bolt is on the bottom of the transmission case, and it is labeled. Honda ATF DW-1 is the recommended fluid and you replace whatever amount drains out, which is typically less than half of the capacity or about 3 quarts.
Good video! Does the maintenance minder tell you when to change transfer case, rear diff and transmission fluids OR you really have to keep track by mileage?
For those saying that it wasnt the correct method your right. But he got it done.... saying the people that are watching this how to video
For everyone watching this video, it is NOT recommended to use a torque wrench to loosen bolts. Use a breaker bar or ratchet wrench if possible.
100% agree
He probably thought that the torque wrench was meant to give him more "torque" to loosen the bolt.
You guys realize that some torque wrenches are reversible right???

your gravity idea is amazing,,,,
Thanks, make things so much easier. Pour and just simply wait.
Those are crush washers, serving 2 purposes, crushing to seal any leaks, crushes to avoid stripping your threads.

Hey thank you for the video, super informative. Do you know what is the OD of the filler hose that you used in the video? 5/8"?
Good lighting, steady picture, everything is very clear and to the point. Thank you!
What arw signs of bad transfer case or the need to add transfer case fluids?
love your how to on the acura series. Is the transfer case fluid the same for 2017 model?

@@JDMRightHandDrive Thanks!
great video, is this the same as the transmission fluid change?
I have a transmission service video for the MDX as well. ua-cam.com/video/a0pYku5cb84/v-deo.html
I like your idea of using gravity instead of hand pumping. Did your funnel come with the hose attached or did you attach a hose to a long neck funnel?
This hose came from a hand pump. I removed it from the hand pump and it fit perfectly to my long funnel.
@@JDMRightHandDrive I bought a hand pump then I saw your video now I regret it lol thanks for the video by the way
The video does not show the exact location of the transfer case unfortunately.

Does transfer case fluid change mean the same with transmission fluid or this working for gear?
I mean transfer case and gear case mean the same?

Hi there, would it be the same for a 2016 TLX with the V6 SH-AWD? Great video by the way 👍
Yes sir, have fun swapping your gear oil!
Did you change your crush washers what sizes are they?
Would this be the same for a 2009 tl sh awd?
I owned an 08 RL and that was the same SH awd system fluid exchange as the MDX. I would imagine your TL would be the same process.
I have a 2012 mdx. Would this work for mine too ?
I once saw a guy use a bubble level as a hamer
What size is the crush washer? Same as the engine oil?
The crush washers were purchased from the dealership when I bought the drivetrain fluids. They are all different sizes
The crush washer size is 20mm for the Acura MDX ... Model years 07-13.
Good video! Does the maintenance minder tell you when to change transfer case, rear diff and transmission fluids OR you really have to keep track by mileage?
Unfortunately the car doesn't tell you when to do them. I just changed them every 30,000 mi les
@@JDMRightHandDrive My 2010 Minder code 3 for Transfer & Transmission fluid, 6 for Rear Diff.
how many qts did you use
Only need to purchase one quart. Transfer case holds about .6 to .7 quarts .
@@JDMRightHandDrive which brand ?
This is the differential fluid change ??
This is a front transfer case not a differential. Uses gear oil vs Acura DPSF Fluid in the rear diff. Good Luck, Thanks for watching!
Is that a real question? Look at the title you f#$%ing 🤡
It’s hard to watch him use a torque wrench to break loose those drain plugs😢
Torque wrench, breaker bar. Same diff
That oil you just drained looks pretty new. Maybe you changed it too early. Lol
I thought the same when I did this fluid exchange, but I did it 10k miles late according to what Acura suggests (every 30k miles).
My fluid looks the same. You prob only have the change this every 50k miles
