I think dragons getting kicked out their family at puperty is a reference to lions. When lions get sexual age (two human years), they start fighting their father. Eventually, their father loses patens and kicks them out of the pride. They also do this to prevent incest (at least that's what I learned in school).
Am now tempted to bring up a previous comment I made in AMWDW where Spike mentioned being any species in Orcs and Oubliettes, and wondering if I should incorporate my rules for playing as a Pokémon in Pathfinder. (ponders if Spike would be a Dragonite or a Salamence now)
I had such a huge smile on my face when Spike got wings, it really does make us feel happy for him. And I wasn't too hung up on the fact he learnt to fly so fast - I just assumed it's more natural for dragons (for sure way more natural than for Twilight hah, it's not really in her blood or instinct)
This episode was a great episode but the wings was the biggest shocking moment in Spikes life one of the best Spike episodes of Season 8 the episode had A LOT of references from the show prior season 1 to now I give this one a thumbs up
I really liked Spike's exclamation of: 'Let my ponies go!' As though, in his mind, Zecora and Rarity are part of his extended family, which means that they are under his protection. And as for the short flight-lesson.. He was there for Twilight, when she learned to use her wings, and he is the No. 1 Assistant, so I don't consider it too far fetched that he would have retained some information and pointers from that time.
Also consider he's not like Twilight, a pony who under normal circumstances are either born with wings or must forever be tethered to the earth. He's a dragon, creatures who grow wings as a natural part of development. It's not hard to imagine that such beings would have a natural instinct to quickly pick up on flying. Especially when considering it's natural for those who molt to be kicked out on their own to fend for themselves.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I can just picture him and Twilight sat in the library while she gets him to quiz her over and over again on proper wing technique from a stack of flash cards she's made up. I'm sure Spike has accidentally memorised a whole bunch of stuff he's helped Twilight study over the years.
And he's shown blatant attraction to Ember, as well as being the first to get to Ember's Tsundere heart with friendship. (Is it obvious that I'm a Spike/Ember shipper?)
Spike is noticing that friend zone, and I honestly think he's leaning more towards put upon friend than crush towards Rarity now. All that is needed for him to get over Rarity is for him to fall for someone else. I vote Ember, with Smolder as an acceptable second option.
Interesting thing is: I actually saw a fan-comic which showed the scene from one episode where Spike said Twilight was like his sister. BUT...the comic then continued after that... "Twilight, I know I said you were like my sister. But do you think, just for today..." (tear falls from Spike) "...that I could call you Mom?" Yes, the feels were real with that comic.
Starlight and spike, twilight is like some type of mother to spike (that's what I think at least) because twilight raised him and has been for him for a long time.
I figured Spike figured out flying so fast because he was with Twilight every step of the way when she learned to fly, and remembered all the lessons she had to learn. Just my own personal head canon though.
Was kinda disappointed that the entire Main 6 and Starlight didn't get to see Spike's wings Also, Spike getting his wings is kinda just as big as the CMCs getting their cutie marks and I was hoping there'd be a Pinkie party thrown for him
Wings! Finally! I have been wanting him to get Spike wings for years now! If there was one character that deserved wings it was Spike, because he kept falling and having his life in danger and Twilight kept having to save him, it got old after a while. But now he has wings! So excited for this new concept for Spike's character.
Well Spike is a dragon and every other dragon we have seen has had wings. As much as being raised by ponies makes Spike different, well, can't argue with biology.
This is one of the most epic episodes in season 8 ever and also bringing more mythical creatures from legends and folklore such as the Roc is very interesting.
Dr. Wolf, the high mortality rate among dragons going through Dragon Puberty is consistent with the biology of many species of reptile. A sea turtle will lay hundreds of eggs, but only a tiny percentage of them will reach adulthood. Also, while mammals and some birds will care for their young into adolescence, reptile parents usually abandon their progeny at an early age. (Crocodilians do carry their newly-hatched babies to safety, and many dinosaurs were similar to their bird descendants in caring for their young.)
Also, The Molt both puts dragons at risk, but also provides them with the super fire needed to repel the attacking monsters. It weeds out both weak dragons, and stupid dragons. The turning to stone is likely to protect against last minute attacks before the molt ends, and to look awesome.
I enjoy that the characters are progressing and now Twilight doesn't have drag Spike everywhere on her back, but the way I see Spike with wings is they took Spike and slapped a pair of wings on him, though I feel there might be something bigger brewing up due to Spike
This can be the beginning of his changes, just because he got wings and the smell and itching stoped does not mean his puberty is over. He still acted like this was ongoing and so did Twilight by the time the episode ended.
Book Lover I know, *hides under a blanket* I tried to make a joke as well....they always fall flat....unless I'm not meaning to then I'm funny as tartatrus
Hmmm I'm neither a evolutionary biologist, psychologist, or even a sociologist but I wonder if this habit of kicking out molting youngsters is what lead to dragon society becoming what it was? Let's say the ancestors of the modern Equestrian Dragon (ie. not quite sapient proto-dragons) initially kicked out molting youth not so much for the protection of the parents but that of unhatched eggs or younger dragons. In order to protect more young the molting dragons were left to fend for themselves to protect the larger group of young trusting that the molting youngster would be able to survive on their own. Those that survive put more emphasis on looking out for themselves and ideals of strength as it is what kept them alive. Those dragons that lacked the strength or cunning to survive fell to the predators so those dragons that focused on strength reproduced more than those that did not. As dragons gained Sapience those ideals shaped the culture with dragons in general being more selfish and proving themselves as being strong. And only bowing to those stronger than themselves. Dragons that would have been opposed to a place where might makes right were unlikely to have reached adulthood to contest it. It took Ember who while not exactly leader of the year at least valued the mind to start leading dragons down a different path, and there is still an emphasis on strength. This is just wild speculation and fan theory at best of course but it is interesting to consider.
Dracarot I think it is interesting. Wish the author of the Elements of Harmony guide books and the Journal of the 2 Sisters would write a book based on Twilight's findings of dragons.
4:03 Instead of thinking of that as "Dragons being savages/mean" think of it like this. Any dragon that doesn't survive shows poor skills in surviving on their own, so Molting is like a biological test of strength to ensure that only the strong survive.
This was a good episode. Though I feel like Rarity was kinda showing that she is caring for spike more as things go in the episode. And Twilight as like a big sister/guardian cares a lot about Spike and wants to protect him. It all makes me feel like Twilight & Rarity each have a important role in Spikes character than anything. So maybe him maturing while the same size is a sign of his dragon growth changing the more he desires to protect them.
I have several things to say about this episode, starting with- 1.Hey we finally get to see Pee-Wee again, it's nice to see how much he has grown, now toppling over by Spike a bit height-wise. Too bad we couldn't see more of him a bit longer, but probably due to time constraints. 2. More lore in Equestria to learn; from the dragon and equivalent to puberty to how it effects other wildlife. The Roc looked awesome and seeing what all Spike did during the fight with it really makes me wonder how big his flames can go when he gets even older. On a side note, it makes me wonder just how old he is compared to the CMC, assuming they are around the age of Junior High school imo. 3. And of course finally- MY BOY GOT HIS WINGS, FINALLY, IT TOOK THIS SHOW EIGHT SEASONS BUT IT FINALLY HAPPENED!!! I guess those like Twilight can't call him a baby dragon anymore huh?😁
Silver Quill's gonna run out of fireworks over all that continuity! Also, to be fair, dragons of Spike's age are probably usually a lot tougher than him who has lived with ponies his whole life.
*Insert creepy music here* You walk though this mirror to an other dimension. A dimension of magic, a dimension of friendship, a dimension of ponies. Moving into a land of continuity and overly obscure plot devices. You have entered... The M.A. Larson Zone!
Dr. Wolf, regarding dragons being kicked out of the home during Dragon Puberty: it sounds brutal like the Spartans, except the real-life Spartans were even more severe. I think dragons are supposed to be the Klingons of this show: a society of overly (to the point of farce) aggressive warrior-types, except dragons are usually more solitary than Klingons. I have to admit I think the addition of wings was unnecessary. Not all European-style dragons need wings, and Chinese dragons don't have wings at all (I have to admit the first time I saw an image of Discord, I thought he looked like a Chinese dragon).
legendre007 I think they are more like reptiles in that way - producing lots of children, but only caring for a little while before they become competition.
I was spoild on this, I did not see the leeks but I saw a picture if spike with wings, probobly taken from the leeks, so I know this was going to happen. I did not know when, but I know it was on its wey.
Same thing happened when the Cutie Mark Crusaders got their Cutie Marks. Images of Spike with wings spoiled everything! I like to be surprise, thank you!
Many cartoons have puberty-related episodes. I remember an episode of Teen Titans (the original) when Starfire had a Tamaranean version of puberty. Heck, the Netflix animated adult show Big Mouth entirely involves on puberty.
Justin Riley seemed more like the Teen Titans episode "the Horn". Where Starfire feels like a freak for going through a unique version of Tamiranian puberty, a version that she doesn't understand. Much like how Spike doesn't understand Dragon puberty.
Doc... You missed a good continuity nod when Twilight was oblivious about the roc. She's shown that, when she's focused on something (in this case Spike), she can be fairly oblivious to the world around her. *Spike at your Service*--with Twilight reading, only to be disturbed by her OCD senses tingling thanks to AJ--is a good example of this. Admittedly, I and my two boyfriends are very similar in this regard, sometimes becoming so focused on something that we "autopilot" and miss everything around us. Regardless, it's about time we saw Spike growing up, and I'm happy that this happened.
Found it really enjoyable I just wished Spike grew a little bit to along with the wings but meh whatever. I love the idea Spike was growing up and they did the obvious puberty lesson but they made their own spin on it by applying dragon standards that almost seem natural and even have smolder explain how growing up through greed isnt natural unlike molting. Rarity I just found funny just cause of her being deaf. Also really highlights Spike is different due to his upbringing.
As far as the convolutions go...Didnt Twilight day she was going to Zecora’s to get something for Spike? As for Spike being treated the same way....he’s still a kid. There’s not much he can do. Besides we all know he would do ANYTHING for Rarity. As far as the writing goes. It’s important to remember that MLP is not like Avatar the Last Air Bender where the entire SERIES is mapped out. Not is it like Aqua Teen Hunger Force where they just hit the reset button at the end of ever episode. It falls somewhere in the middle.
Yeah, I also question how Ember didn´t tell Twilight about her species. Like, I´m sure Twilight asked a lot. "Hi Ember, can you tell me everything about dragons please? Thanks." Either Ember thinks Twilight is creepy, or she´s still writing. Anyway, to all those who say that Spike learned to fly way too fast: 1. He´s been around when Rainbow Dash gave Twilight instructions. 2. Every dragons grows wings at some point, so flying comes naturally to dragons.
To think, once upon a time Spike had some of the worst episode. They were cringy, they were weird, and so on. Now however, when ever it is a Spike centered episode they turn out to be some of the best of the season for many people. It is so much fun learning about the dragons in mlp, and i can't wait to see what will happen next!!
Love how Twilight got her wings, and now Spike got his wings❤I can still remember the seasons where they both didn't and now it's like, They are now a winged family❤
This type of episode is the best, and this is one of the best episodes. Spike gets to grow up some, and his friendship with Twilight, Rarity, and Zecora gets reinforced. Smolder gets some establishing time, as well as development as a more typical dragon. And it's funny! Especially Rarity's complaints about being in a giant creature's claws not getting any easier, and Zecora's eyerolling reaction. It's just a fun and happy episode. :) ALSO, VERY IMPORTANTLY: The Molt is a survival mechanism that weeds out the weakest dragonlings, and the molt itself provides the super fire needed as a defense. It is a little harsh, but it's also likely a necessity ecologically that keeps population down while also ensuring strong dragons. The mastery of flying is implied to be partially instinctive, and his riding Twilight is also implied to only be temporary because he'll get fully used to his new wings.
I'm hoping that Scootaloo is allowed to fly in Season 9. Also, Spike has dragon flight instincts. Twilight is too cerebral to trust her pegasus/alicorn flight instincts after the transformation.
Hey DrWolf. All I can say is I'm happy Spike finally got his wings. Amazing that it's been 8 years in the making that Spike undergoes this change. I'm hoping the show gives Spike more development after undergoing this transition to getting wings. Overall, I enjoyed this episode and I really hope the writers don't retcon Spike.
I loved this episode. Aside from the reveal of Spike getting his wings (which is great), the humor is mostly spot on (Though I could have done without Rarity being deaf in the second and third act), They managed to mostly avoid the obvious misunderstanding trope that could have turned this into "Owl's Well That Ends Well 2.0", and the third act is one of the better action sequences in the show. Easily my favorite episode of Season 8 so far.
Josh haber had this one and I'm glad for it, he's really become one of the best writers of the series. Though I'm kinda shocked Starlight wasn't in this episode, you almost never see one of his episodes without her in it.
@@linkonar7823 Not necessarily, "Surf and/or Turf" was a superb episode, and "Horse Play" and "The Break-Up Breakdown" were both immensely entertaining, but that aside, the other episodes ranged from decent "Grannies Gone Wild" to okay. "Non Compete Clause" was terrible though.
Justin Riley I thought Grannies Gone Wild was good and very entertaining through and through. There's no episode this season that I found even remotely just "bleh". Yes, even Non Compete Clause.
@@linkonar7823 I really liked that one too, I'd give it a 7/10. As far as this season is concerned, there's only two episodes that I didn't really like, "Yakkity Sax" and the aforementioned "Non Compete Clause". Even then, I wouldn't say that those are anywhere near the worst episodes of the show.
If phoenix feathers cause things to happen to ponies, that has an interesting notion to itself. There is a family of phoenixes that live just outside the dragon land, is it possible dragons have a symbiotic relationship with phoenixes?
With teen dragons stealing and breaking Phoenix eggs? (or failing to). More like both liking heat I'd say. (and Phoenix feathers has no effect on dragons apparently.)
Having another young dragon around makes explanation seeking much easier than before. I am not sure Dragonlord Ember would talk about everyday matters on a daily basis but Smolder is a different thing, she, is Smolder male or female? Don't know. Smolder can be more open about it, since being young and having more interaction with everycreature per se opens up much better opportunities to talk about everyday matters than the 'diplomatic' contact to the dragonlord. I loved the introduction of the Roc, a bird mentioned in the Sindbad tales of my childhood. Cool. About the wings, well, it had to happen sooner or later. And the way it was treated in matters of storytelling is not that bad. Could have been much worse.
Hopefully by next season Spike could be closer to Smolder’s height, she was so much taller than him even though she is much smaller than any other teenager dragon we have seen.
Definitely a great episode. I wonder if Dr. Wolf might have a session with Garble after this. I can imagine how traumatizing it must be, being kicked out by your own home by your family when they are still so small and going through awkward and embarrassing changes, plus, huge predators attempting to eat them. It becomes very understandable why dragons desire to act and appear strong and independent. I can also imagine that Garble’s resentment of Spike might also be related to how he has friends who help him when he probably had to endure alone.
Did anyone notice that Smolder mentioned that she has a brother that she had already kicked out of the house? (meaning that it's a ''teenage dragon'') I already want a chapter were we get the revelation that his brother is Garble.
Dr. Wolf, what makes me dubious about Spike finally getting wings in this episode is that I worry that it might amount to nothing more than a cosmetic change. As you point out, the whole episode and Spike sprouting wings symbolizes the transition toward adulthood. But if that isn't backed up by Spike behaving in a psychologically more mature manner in subsequent episodes, then this symbolic representation of him growing up will come across as superficial. I don't mean he has to be a super-adult or anything; it's just that if the wings are the only change, then there won't be much behind the symbolism. 🙁🐲
Puberty also has other effects on a growing teen's mind, so Spike might start looking a little closer at Ember or Smolder, and a little less at Rarity and Skeleanor. ;D
Well I dont think that he being mature will happen sadly, for 3 reasons. He is important as comedy when things go too far, since this show is for kids. He is always portraited as mature as the story needs him to be. Lastly he is the most reacuring guy, not to sound sexist. I just mean i cant see mlp making such a reacouring guy, more mature than what he is shown to be when its not a spike center episode.
I feel like Spike's quick adaptation to flying may have been an instinctual thing for dragons. Also, The Crystal Empire is gonna be in for a surprise whenever Twilight and Spike decide to pay a visit to Shining Armor.
honestly, Spike's flying skills didn't really bug me much. It's possible that it might be instinctual much like how a butterfly can fly right after it leaves it cacoon. For the first couple seconds he was overthinking about his wings, but when he saw the trouble instinct took over and he just knew what to do.
Honestly, Dr. Wolf, this was a long time coming for Spike. I had always wondered how long we would have to wait before he would get his wings, and now our prayers have finally been answered. One of the best episodes for Season 8.
When I first saw the episode, I was at a complete loss for words when Spike got wings. I didn't see that coming at all. I was overloaded with shock and ecstasy. Now I'm very curious to see how the other characters react to seeing Spike with wings. I bet Rainbow Dash is gonna be thrilled to have another flying friend, kinda like how she reacted when Twilight got wings back in the season 3 finale.
The episode was great. We got to learn more about dragons, and so much continuity. I was always worried that since spike was being raised among ponies that that would hurt his growing process. But ultimately we learn that aside from knowing nothing about his body that wasn’t the case. And it’s good to see spike finally growing some. Definitely agree that learning that dragons kick there young out, and that there smell also attacks predators is kinda extreme. Guess that explains why there there are only a small group of dragons. 😰 Don’t think Rarity becoming loosing her hearing because of the feathers was necessary since Spike was also doing the volume control joke in the episode. And having Zacorra, rarity, and twilight gave too many characters needed. And while it may be a little disappointing that spike looses some individual traits by now having wings like every other dragon. I still welcome the change and growth of his character. Even if that means more poor jokes like Rarity using him as a dress manakin. All and all a good episode about puberty and growing up.
For me most of his episodes are good. Actually it's hard for me to think particulary about bad one. So I don't understand this hate? Spike is awesome character, he deserves more attention and love.
Czer Kitka. The ones I consider bad are Owl's Well that Ends Well, Dragon Quest, Princess Spike, Spike at Your Service, and Just for the Sidekicks. The ones that I consider fine are Secret of My Excess, Equestria Games, and Triple Threat. The ones I consider great are Guantlet of Fire, Times are a Changeling, and this one. So, if you combine the fine episodes and the great ones, you outnumber the bad ones.
"That he was a different kind of pony." My theory exactly. I always thought he was like one of those land dragons, especially since there are so many different renditions of dragons across the world.
I can understand the progression of Spike since the Writers are moving more towards the Gen5 to finish any or all Arcs in their storyline. I get that Spike had to eventually grow-up, but I think the Writers seem a bit fickle in making Spike a more special in the episode. I wish I could say that Spike is really needed to progress as far as he can go. But that is up to the Writers for the near future. When he had the ("I Want!!!") growth spurt, he did not have the wings then. Nor did he have wings when Twilight hit the Egg with her OP magic.
I quite enjoyed watching it as well! Though I would like to explain the bad hearing thing. The reason for Rarity having hearing problems was so she couldn't understand what Spike was saying, not so that she couldn't hear the Rock. That's why Twilight not having any hearing problems works, because the Rock was way up in the air and she couldn't hear it (or she was doing paperwork in her head and just wasn't paying much attention XD). I could probably explain some other stuff. But I'll just say this. If you think, "why would he/she do/act like this" instead of, "why would the writer's do this", you can come up with some pretty good explanations. I'm sure you know all that, but it's a piece of advice I picked up from a different UA-camr. Hope you have a wonderful night! Sincerely, Guardian Blade the positive analyser.
I saw this coming. Mainly because I was spoiled, which I hate, dang those pirates. But it kind of felt like they were going somewhere with Spike, I mean he was named 'The Official Friendship Ambassador to the Dragons' but I don't know. Other Bronies/Pegasisters seemed to have figured it out, seeing as drawings of older Spike almost always depicted him with wings, even back in season 6, as far as I can tell, I only immersed myself in the fandom the Friday before the season 6 finale, and I only joined public (UA-cam) fandom between 7 and 8. It comes with it's perks (being relatively new) like not having to experience the Twilicorn arguments (from what I heard they got pretty heated). I knew about the show before, I actually have some pretty old episodes seasons 1-3 on DVD, best of you know, so I knew about the 'Magical Mystery Cure' episode. Why am I talking about this now, because I actually agree that this episode was Spike's MMC. Anyways, when the MMC came out, I was the age demographic for this show, so at the time I loved the princess topic at the time, but now I only like the wings. I feel the same for Spike, I love his wings, but he should be treated better, I mean he's growing up. It's like how Twilight should be recognized more often (s4 complaint I know, but this is why I like the wings and not the title, and I wasn't in the fandom back then) Anyways, love your channel!!!!!!!!
It's a good development for him: I hope to see his character progress further... 7@=e I sort of compare Spike with Shadowchild in Ursula Vernon's "Digger": he starts out rather naïve, but finally gains some self-realization about his own nature, and becomes fully mature at the end. 7@=e
I really enjoyed this episode, because it was something I both expected and didn't expect. A long time ago, I commented on one of your spike videos that it may be possible that he would molt and grow wings during the molt. As that is actually how grasshoppers gain wings. Plus the comment made by a certain jerky red dragon made it seem like all dragons start out by riding on their parents back. So possibly/probably being winless. I never expected the show to confirm or deny this though. So getting a definite answer definitely made my day
everyone's fan fic is ruined lol. nah i think this is a good and a bad thing. "Spike getting wings was bound to happen, for there were no dragons without them shown, since this was an western dragon design. him learning or knowing how to use them is more associated with like how birds know how to fly rather quickly. also it seems that dragons are more bird like that given credit for. The leave the nest, due to bad smell is quite similar to a bird being force to learn to fly by being forced out the nest and their cries attract predators. I see his flight as by birth and nature rather than by teacher Unlike twilight, who was not born with them, thus having more issues (like almost a full episode of them) it is easy to say that flight was not encoded in her dna . spike (if going by the fact that all dragons had them) did so him grasping yet not perfecting flight seemed more plausible. it does how ever take away from spikes uniqueness but it his personality that made him spike not the body. this is an argument built on the six years or so of spike unable to fly. People got comfortable with it and began to create their own ideas why. But like always when fan fics are ruined everyone gets upset because their reason wasn't correct. I will watch this episode and enjoy it with out the insight but i love watching your channel simply because i get to look at episodes from a different light.
My impression on Smolder's handling of Spike's molting and her not saying "Oh, and you get wings from it", is that to her, that's kind of obvious. It probably didn't occur to her that it needed to be said.
Speaking of Continuity. The hat, coat and Sunglasses look Spike was wearing is the same one he had in 'The Times they are a Changeling'. That made me happy. I love that episode :3
I almost figured that spike would never get wings considering that some spices of dragons don't have them... Not all of them have fire breath either... Though the subtraction of either don't make them much weaker...
I think dragons getting kicked out their family at puperty is a reference to lions.
When lions get sexual age (two human years), they start fighting their father. Eventually, their father loses patens and kicks them out of the pride. They also do this to prevent incest (at least that's what I learned in school).
Oh man silver quill is going to explode from this much continuity!
Star Gear
RIP Silverquill
Cause of Death: Fanboying / Too much continuity.
I think I smell roasted chicken.
Star GeYes!
Let's see: the shampoo from Mane thing about You, Pee Wee from Dragon Quest, and mention of Spike's greed-induced growth from Secret of My Excess,
Wait... So that wasn't thunder I heard in the distance..?
Congratulations your spike evolved into a flying type
Unfortunately, this means he is now doubly weak to ice type attacks.
There's no space for another Ponymon.
Do you want to replace your Rapidash with Spike?
Am now tempted to bring up a previous comment I made in AMWDW where Spike mentioned being any species in Orcs and Oubliettes, and wondering if I should incorporate my rules for playing as a Pokémon in Pathfinder. (ponders if Spike would be a Dragonite or a Salamence now)
Dragon / Flying 🤔
I had such a huge smile on my face when Spike got wings, it really does make us feel happy for him.
And I wasn't too hung up on the fact he learnt to fly so fast - I just assumed it's more natural for dragons (for sure way more natural than for Twilight hah, it's not really in her blood or instinct)
Same
This episode was a great episode but the wings was the biggest shocking moment in Spikes life one of the best Spike episodes of Season 8 the episode had A LOT of references from the show prior season 1 to now I give this one a thumbs up
I really liked Spike's exclamation of: 'Let my ponies go!' As though, in his mind, Zecora and Rarity are part of his extended family, which means that they are under his protection. And as for the short flight-lesson.. He was there for Twilight, when she learned to use her wings, and he is the No. 1 Assistant, so I don't consider it too far fetched that he would have retained some information and pointers from that time.
Technically, Zecora isn't a pony...or is she? I mean, traditionally, unicorns and pegasi wouldn't be deemed ponies....
ZenCyn That's an excellent point!
In conclusion don't fuck with Spikes hoard!
You know, Smolder looks alot like a dragon version of Scootaloo.
I think smolder is more of the big dragon sister that spike never had
And he's shown blatant attraction to Ember, as well as being the first to get to Ember's Tsundere heart with friendship.
(Is it obvious that I'm a Spike/Ember shipper?)
Ack I keep forgetting she’s a girl and it always seems weird when people say it
@@hariman7727 same here
I think it's fitting that Spike has wings. Now he can go more places with Twilight! Like sister, like brother.
That's another valid intepretation.
But do you think, just for today..." (tear falls from Spike) "...that I could call you Mom?"
Yes, the feels were real with that comic.
Fanatic Mitchell
Not really, more like friends. If they had more of an intimate relationship then yea.
Starlight and spike, twilight is like some type of mother to spike (that's what I think at least) because twilight raised him and has been for him for a long time.
Wait spike got wings!?
Laarrrsssssooooonnnnn!!!!!!
Wait that doesnt work her.
Haaabbbbbeeeeeerrrrr!!!!!!!!
Silver Quill did the Larson joke and even played a video of him saying "this isn't my fault."
I figured Spike figured out flying so fast because he was with Twilight every step of the way when she learned to fly, and remembered all the lessons she had to learn. Just my own personal head canon though.
Was kinda disappointed that the entire Main 6 and Starlight didn't get to see Spike's wings
Also, Spike getting his wings is kinda just as big as the CMCs getting their cutie marks and I was hoping there'd be a Pinkie party thrown for him
Hehe it still felt earned to me so I'm cool with there being no party. Besides Pinkie was hilarious in this episode.
Rainbow Dash: "Awesome! Another new flying buddy! And we can fly with Twilight too!"
Wings! Finally! I have been wanting him to get Spike wings for years now! If there was one character that deserved wings it was Spike, because he kept falling and having his life in danger and Twilight kept having to save him, it got old after a while. But now he has wings! So excited for this new concept for Spike's character.
they'll still find ways to make him fall
For once, no one got mad for someone getting wings.
LOL :P
General Zeta Wait for it. Lol.
Well Spike is a dragon and every other dragon we have seen has had wings. As much as being raised by ponies makes Spike different, well, can't argue with biology.
I actually thought Smolder was trolling Spike with the talk about having to leave his home and everything while watching the episode
Not to mention we saw what like 10 teen dragons before now, and even less younger dragons!
I enjoy that the characters are progressing and now Twilight doesn't have drag Spike everywhere on her back, but the way I see Spike with wings is they took Spike and slapped a pair of wings on him, though I feel there might be something bigger brewing up due to Spike
That and the fact that he can actually help fight a creature like the roc now but your right nothing's changed. (sarcasam by the way)
This can be the beginning of his changes, just because he got wings and the smell and itching stoped does not mean his puberty is over. He still acted like this was ongoing and so did Twilight by the time the episode ended.
Sara Samaletdin The only changes I can come up for him is growth in body and many other features. It's almost like Pokémon evolution
RedfurredPikachu Unless Spike starts evolving like Pokémon which it might be a possibility
"Spike was better before he got wings!"
Jodie Ella
Don't even start with that
Jodie Ella
No, Please continue :)
Jodie Ella, shut up. We do not need that going again.
Honey Drop the Unicorn, I believe it was a joke/call back to Fame and Misfortune where the character says a similar line about Twilight.
Book Lover
I know, *hides under a blanket* I tried to make a joke as well....they always fall flat....unless I'm not meaning to then I'm funny as tartatrus
I wonder... Can we assume all dragons were born wingless, but, assuming they do, survive the molt, that's when they get their wings?
I have several things to say about this episode, starting with-
1.Hey we finally get to see Pee-Wee again, it's nice to see how much he has grown, now toppling over by Spike a bit height-wise.
You hear that sound in this distant, it's the cry of a Hippogriff
Honey Drop the Unicorn Gasp, it be the Quill of Silver!
Blue Blaze
Yes, I do belive is the grand hippogriff of the north
Silver Quill's gonna run out of fireworks over all that continuity!
Also, to be fair, dragons of Spike's age are probably usually a lot tougher than him who has lived with ponies his whole life.
*Insert creepy music here* You walk though this mirror to an other dimension. A dimension of magic, a dimension of friendship, a dimension of ponies. Moving into a land of continuity and overly obscure plot devices. You have entered...
The M.A. Larson Zone!
I don't care what anybody say this was the best episode ever
People will forget it like Newbie Dash
camisha davis I 200% Agree With You
MrConredsX Sorry i disagree. Maybe ONLY MINORITY WILL remember this episode but as a spike fan! I love it!😊
I think even you will fogot this episode once you will watch the new SPike episode where he meets his father
MrConredsX We'll see. It is still 13 episodes to that episode so i will judge for myself.😊
I did not know when, but I know it was on its wey.
eventyraren same here
Same thing happened when the Cutie Mark Crusaders got their Cutie Marks. Images of Spike with wings spoiled everything! I like to be surprise, thank you!
GracefulArt693 I did not know about the cmc geting there mark untill it happened, when was that leeked?
Same here. Somebody used a picture of spike with wings in their thumbnail :(
No the cmc marks wern't leaked but episode 21 was but luckily The Cmc Had Costumes on or we would have seen them before hand.
One of the best episodes this season. #sparity
blaa6 One of my second least favourite episodes of season 8!
I agree
#SpikeEmber or #SpikeSmolder
ShadowWriter45 With who? Jodie or I?
This episode reminded me a lot of the Star VS The Forces of Evil episode, "Mewberty."
Did anyone else get that vibe?
Justin Riley Uh, yeah. Probably the first episode that came to mind.
Many cartoons have puberty-related episodes. I remember an episode of Teen Titans (the original) when Starfire had a Tamaranean version of puberty. Heck, the Netflix animated adult show Big Mouth entirely involves on puberty.
aldo curiel Yes. But, its execution reminded me of it in some ways.
Justin Riley seemed more like the Teen Titans episode "the Horn". Where Starfire feels like a freak for going through a unique version of Tamiranian puberty, a version that she doesn't understand. Much like how Spike doesn't understand Dragon puberty.
aldo curiel I just said that. And that this episode felt similar to that.
Dragons probably age slower than ponies.
Thanks."
Either Ember thinks Twilight is creepy, or she´s still writing.
Anyway, to all those who say that Spike learned to fly way too fast:
1. He´s been around when Rainbow Dash gave Twilight instructions.
2. Every dragons grows wings at some point, so flying comes naturally to dragons.
Me(Comic Book Guy Voice):...Best, Spike Episode, Ever.
Tbh ive never seen your face before this video.
And, surprusingly, your voice matches what a guessed you looked like. So thats kinda neat.
Are you new?:)
Character progression is a lovely thing.
Love how Twilight got her wings, and now Spike got his wings❤I can still remember the seasons where they both didn't and now it's like, They are now a winged family❤
Spike looks good with Wings
At least he won't have to be saved so much anymore. I mean, he's fallen to his near death so many times.
Hasbro realized all the little girls who watched mlp in season 1 are now teens or pre-teens.
Okay, fess up, who gave Spike the Red Bull?
Chris Teet I thought he needed the extra boost
This type of episode is the best, and this is one of the best episodes. Spike gets to grow up some, and his friendship with Twilight, Rarity, and Zecora gets reinforced. Smolder gets some establishing time, as well as development as a more typical dragon. And it's funny!
Especially Rarity's complaints about being in a giant creature's claws not getting any easier, and Zecora's eyerolling reaction.
It's just a fun and happy episode. :)
ALSO, VERY IMPORTANTLY: The Molt is a survival mechanism that weeds out the weakest dragonlings, and the molt itself provides the super fire needed as a defense. It is a little harsh, but it's also likely a necessity ecologically that keeps population down while also ensuring strong dragons.
The mastery of flying is implied to be partially instinctive, and his riding Twilight is also implied to only be temporary because he'll get fully used to his new wings.
"Who could have seen This coming?!?
"
I dunno. Anyone with a subscription to Discovery Family watching commercials?
Spike is a better flyer then Twilight.
welp she's unicorn turned alicorn, while he has it in his genes so I guess his instinct just kicked in hah
+Szczurzysława everything is a better flyer then Twilight... But Scootaloo will always be a Dodo.
Capt. Rudy64 maybe she is happier using Southwest
JRock People barely watch the show
Shadowtechnik It is what it is.
Trust me, they won't.
Crazy Luigi Yeah
I had knew Spike would grow wings, he grows up so fast
About five minutes in I called it. I recognised the puberty thing, and that led me to changes, leading to wings.
he has wings. I'm so proud.
Yep. Spike has wings now.
anyone else get a Gargoyles vibe from the transformation scene ?
SonicBrownie I was thinking Terragenesis from _Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D._
Oh, yeah, I can see the Gargoyles reference too.
Why, were the other ones sub-par to you?
So spike is finally getting some actual brains?
Never mind that is just a dream
Spike finally got wings. I'm so happy.
Elderscrollsswimmer they didn't explicitly say they have no effect on dragons. Just a theory, though
No -- but hugging peewee didn't affect Spike. Molting is clearly said to be normal dragon biology (and Smolder doesn't even mention a phoenix).
Elderscrollsswimmer don't forget, MLP has a problem with retcon sometimes
Thomas Wilkinson Smolder is a female.
iloveowls90 thank you
Keoh 8 not for dense old me
Smolder is canonically female. Just thought I'd put that out there.
I was hoping that spike would be a Asian dragon.
Puberty also has other effects on a growing teen's mind, so Spike might start looking a little closer at Ember or Smolder, and a little less at Rarity and Skeleanor. ;D
Probably. However, if that were to come, it'd have to be in Season 9, just about.
Well I dont think that he being mature will happen sadly, for 3 reasons. He is important as comedy when things go too far, since this show is for kids. He is always portraited as mature as the story needs him to be. Lastly he is the most reacuring guy, not to sound sexist. I just mean i cant see mlp making such a reacouring guy, more mature than what he is shown to be when its not a spike center episode.
ironblade26 There's another Spike centered episode near the end of the season, Father Knows Beast. So maybe they'll get to this in season 9.
its a kids cartoon
I feel like Spike's quick adaptation to flying may have been an instinctual thing for dragons. Also, The Crystal Empire is gonna be in for a surprise whenever Twilight and Spike decide to pay a visit to Shining Armor.
honestly, Spike's flying skills didn't really bug me much. It's possible that it might be instinctual much like how a butterfly can fly right after it leaves it cacoon. For the first couple seconds he was overthinking about his wings, but when he saw the trouble instinct took over and he just knew what to do.
The trenchcoat and glasses also refer to "The Times They Are a Changeling" (the train ride to the Crystal Empire).
I hope spike be more grow up in the new G5 mlp
I do not wish him to be in G5. If you want G5 to happen why you want it to be the same as G4? Having Mane 6 as main characters again is bad enough.
No G5, keep G4 going after season 9 pls
I screamed so loud when Spike finally got his wings :) I loved this episode!
I could argue that Spike’s sudden flying knowledge would be because it is instinctual as a dragon.
Now there's going to more spike fan art with wings:)
I bet silverquill would love this episode.
Honestly, Dr. Wolf, this was a long time coming for Spike. I had always wondered how long we would have to wait before he would get his wings, and now our prayers have finally been answered. One of the best episodes for Season 8.
I've been wondering since season 1 why Spike was the only dragon without wings.
Now for the new Spike with wings toys.... :P
Spike getting wings are awesome. I hope it will be the same for the CMC episode. I do think might be continuity taking place in thier episode as well.
I like how spike still eats gems
I really like it when kid's show make epoides that say it is scary or sad to grow up but it's going to be okay.
spike turn in to spyro!
he really looks like spyro
Well maybe he's the son of Spyro and we just don't know it yet.
Don’t think Rarity becoming loosing her hearing because of the feathers was necessary since Spike was also doing the volume control joke in the episode.
Yes! More information about dragons!
I think I see silver quill in the room blowing up
A good spike episode... wow
He's actually been getting pretty good episodes lately (in my opinion anyway).
For me most of his episodes are good. Actually it's hard for me to think particulary about bad one. So I don't understand this hate? Spike is awesome character, he deserves more attention and love.
Probably my second favorite Spike episode out of the entire show. Right below Times are A Changeling and right above Gauntlet of Fire.
So far, I've seen 2 good Spike episodes, including this one.
Sincerely, Guardian Blade the positive analyser.
love this episode, mainly because my theory on dragon biology in mlp, is now a fact!, that greed = size growth & age growth = wings
Poor Silver Quill. His continuity levels are about to break the scales.
I think it's something that needed to happen. And to give Spike his own little episode. It was a fun watch.
This episode made me want to seem more interactions with Smolder. She's serious;y one of my favorite characters now!
Has anypony checked on Silver Quill? I am certain he may be on continuity overload right now.
Spike's like " I have difficulty conTROLLING THE VOLUME OF MY VOICE!!!"
It's a good development for him: I hope to see his character progress further... 7@=e
I sort of compare Spike with Shadowchild in Ursula Vernon's "Digger": he starts out rather naïve, but finally gains some self-realization about his own nature, and becomes fully mature at the end.
So getting a definite answer definitely made my day
I see Spike learning how to fly that fast as dragon instincts kicking in.
everyone's fan fic is ruined lol. nah i think this is a good and a bad thing.
Awesome!!! ^w^ Another thing to check off my list of 'Things I'd like to see in the show'. Spike Growing up! ^w^
You missed the callback when Spike looks at his own reflection and says "Hello not so handsome"
