When I was growing up in Pittsburgh, the road my house has been on is surrounded by female Ginko Trees. I got so used to the scent of the Ginko being all smooshed on the ground, I actually became rather fond of them. I never felt they smelled too bad. Another note, by the Ronald McDonald House in Pittsburgh, there was this house that had an entire row of bushes of Honeysuckles. My mom and I would always sneak one when we passed by. Emmy! You should do edible flowers and none traditional edible plants just like Fruity Fruits!
Your delight when eating these nuts makes me smile. I often wonder how humans discovered what they needed to do to prepare and process many different things in the world. I’m hoping this one wasn’t too much trial and error for those ancient ones who first started eating Ginkgo nuts! I appreciate your clear warnings about how to handle and eat what appears to be a real autumn delicacy.
I have a ginkgo in my back yard. I stepped on a fruit and heard it pop. The rest of the day I kept accusing my dog of pooping in the house! Long story short I had worn my shoes back into the house for a fast grab of something and tracked that horrible smell into my house! Next year I am planning on trying them out so thank you for this video!!!!!!
Emmy! Wow! I worked in a small community hospital 25ish years ago for 6 years....I avoided stepping anywhere near these trees for fear of tracking this smell into the MRI dept or my car. If I knew this was ginko biloba and if I knew about it back then, I would be one of those people harvesting it. I really enjoy watching your videos. You are cheerful and patient and so much fun to watch. You are so pretty! Bless you and your family, thank you for your videos.
I have such fond memories associated with ginkgo trees. In elementary school, I was always so fond of ginkgo leaves and my favorite time of year was when they would turn yellow and drop.
There is a ginkgo outside the library at my college, ETSU. I never knew what that horrible smell was until I took a class on dendrology. I suggested removing the tree because most of the student body hated it and everyone in the class glared at me 😂 but as i studied the tree more I grew to really care for it. If I had to pick a favorite tree it is definitely the ginkgo.
I used to eat these as a kid! It’s mind blowing to realize now why my mom would always only allow me to eat a few at a time and told me i would “get sick” if I ate too much!
Omg I absolutely loved your video! I took a test once to find out what kind of tree I am lol. And my result was Ginkgo tree. And today I spotted the tree for the first time and I saw fruits on them (still green and raw) and that got me wondering if the fruit is of any value. It let me here! You explained so well and took us through the whole process. You have no idea how much I appreciate it.
i had a ginkgo tree on my block when i was a kid! during the fall on the walk home from school we would throw the fruit at each other. We called them stink bombs.
Ginkgo trees are my FAVORITE!! theres one on my college and its wonderful. easily my favorite tree on campus. Its huge!!! easily 15 ft in circumference. its a healing tree
There were several female Ginkgo tree on my college campus. Every year the upper class men would sort of gather around the trees and watch as all the new freshmen would start to step on the fruit for a few steps before realizing their mistake. I took horticulture in High school and we studied the Ginkgo tree as part of our curriculum, so the second I saw the leaves and fruit I went the long way round. That stuff makes your shoes smell like poop for weeks. So thankful for my horticulture teacher from high school.

I love ginko with baby bok choy and fresh bean curd. The 'soup' tastes great The ones I've eaten have been yellow though so I'm not sure if it's the exact same type
that's so cool! 12 year old me picking those little ginko fruits up from the sidewalk would never have guessed they were anything close to edible... i still remember their smell. eugh.
Great video! My neighbor has one that overhangs my property and I harvest them every year. I learned about them from a Korean friend and I’ve been hooked? That’s right keep the about low when eating them, no more than ten at one time.
I ate the fruit raw one time, didn’t know the flesh was poisonous, my mom and I had to deal with burning mouths for the rest of the day. Edit: they don’t smell bad at all before they start to fall, it’s only when the fruit ripens does it start smelling like poo.
The only edible part is the nut, and the safest way to eat it is crack it raw, then boil it. Then cut in the half. And soak in cold water. Threw away the brown skin and the thing in the middle of it. Rinse. Then use it to make the sweet soup with sugar, pandan leave, dried longan, red dates and snow fungus. It's taste heavenly and it's the Chines New Year Dessert in Malaysia and Singapore. But take a lot of works. The smell of the outer shell is nasty when brought freshly from the market. Don't smell it, the edible part is only inside. Microwave method much easier but you may ended up poisoning.
I'm clearly binge watching since this is a year old but I have to say you truly find the best/beauty in EVERYTHING. Even dog poo scented tree nuts 😂😂 i just love your optimism!

Hey Emmy I foraged and dried Gingko nuts this year for the first time. I'm here in NJ and our Gingko trees dropped their fruit back in late September and early October so I'm suprised you found them this late in the year.
Since they've been around for forever and people didn't have the same hygiene then they may not have noticed the smell. If you smell and everyone around you smells then this might not seem bad. Just a theory though.
I collected about 20 ginko fruits two weeks ago, from the sidewalk. I don't think their odor quite rises to dog poop, but not exactly Yankee Candle, either. I had no idea what to do with them. I just followed your recipe, roasted 10 of them...addictive! So good! (cue Spongebob card, "10 minutes later") - My tongue feels weird, like it's coated in something.

Be careful! I wonder if they kill dogs ☹️
That has happened to me too.
That is fantastic. Most people cut the female trees down, because they don't like the smell of Gingko.
Julia Jackson I never know that kind of three
@@inkerstales2336 let's feminists know this.
Emmy!
I'll definitely pass on these😂 sounds dangerous and disgusting all at once.
I have such fond memories associated with ginkgo trees. In elementary school, I was always so fond of ginkgo leaves and my favorite time of year was when they would turn yellow and drop.
You are hilarious saying that they smell like dog poop yet still giving them many sniffs😂
always look forward to learning about a new funky fruit thanks to emmy!
The things emmy consumes just to educate us about them just know we love and appreciate you
I used to eat these as a kid!
Same
Ginkgo trees are my FAVORITE!! theres one on my college and its wonderful. easily my favorite tree on campus. Its huge!!! easily 15 ft in circumference. its a healing tree
Omg we just learned about this tree in science last week. Good timing emmy
I’ve seen those leaves on the ground while walking to work and I have always found them so be so beautiful 😍
Question~ Why salt them before cracking them open?
There were several female Ginkgo tree on my college campus. Every year the upper class men would sort of gather around the trees and watch as all the new freshmen would start to step on the fruit for a few steps before realizing their mistake. I took horticulture in High school and we studied the Ginkgo tree as part of our curriculum, so the second I saw the leaves and fruit I went the long way round. That stuff makes your shoes smell like poop for weeks. So thankful for my horticulture teacher from high school.
Read this title out loud to my spouse and he went Wtaf?! I said, oh it’s Emmy doing a fruity fruits video...she’s lovely. Can’t wait to see what this ones about lol....
YAAAASSS!❤️
I love the Gingko biloba tree! The foliage is absolutly beautiful in the fall!!
Ohhhhh this sounds down our ally :P
Yes!!! Do it!
We had two ginkgo trees in our front yard growing up and our Asian neighbours would always come pick the seeds in the fall. I had no idea what they wanted them for 🤯 learned so much! Thanks Emmy ❤️
Emmy is so cute - she's legit talking about a nut that stinks like poo and vomit but still makes me want to try it 😂
i ate so many of these ginkgo nuts as a child😍they’re so good
This is the ONLY presentation I've seen that you didn't say your prayers/ blessing b4 popping them in your mouth!
Theres lots, really
Your chickens must love all the scraps after each fruity fruit episode!
I love ginko with baby bok choy and fresh bean curd. The 'soup' tastes great
The ones I've eaten have been yellow though so I'm not sure if it's the exact same type
She did say they're yellow when boiled
that's so cool! 12 year old me picking those little ginko fruits up from the sidewalk would never have guessed they were anything close to edible... i still remember their smell. eugh.
11:59 "Check your shoes. What's that smell?" Pull my finger. 💨
Eugene Cooper Jr oh
@@ThydaCookingTV I couldn't resist. 😂🙏✌
thank you for telling us
Thanks for tasting these for me! Also for telling us what those things are. I had no idea they were edible.
These dont really sound all that edible. Toxic when raw. Toxic if you eat too much. Awful smell. Skin that blisters. Yeah not really
Yet raw icky tasting apricot kernels help prevent cancer even though they contain a smidge of arsenic.
@@hopemccoy wait really? I knew about the arsenic, but not the other part
@@stephaniewalter4835 yes it's true! Research it, the CDC and FDA would never approve it because it's an actual cure for cancer.
@@stephaniewalter4835 you can safely eat a few per day, it's kinda like giving your dog heartgard, it's toxic but will stave heartworm.
Ackees the same but it’s a massive staple in the Caribbean diet
Arboretum is like my favorite word, sounds elegant and classy.
I've never seen someone get so excited eating something that smells like dog 💩 lmao
Great video! My neighbor has one that overhangs my property and I harvest them every year. I learned about them from a Korean friend and I’ve been hooked? That’s right keep the about low when eating them, no more than ten at one time.
“Check your shoes. What’s that smell?” Well, that fruits out for me🙁
Love your “Nutty Enthusiasm” ! ! !
You produced such a GR8 video - 👍🏽
I ate the fruit raw one time, didn’t know the flesh was poisonous, my mom and I had to deal with burning mouths for the rest of the day.
Edit: they don’t smell bad at all before they start to fall, it’s only when the fruit ripens does it start smelling like poo.
Damn that’s cray
Thank you. 😊Beauty is everywhere. 💜
What a title!!!
As soon as I can, I'll look for some! Thank you for teaching me about Ginko nuts!
“Check your shoes. What’s that smell?” :P
My mom would cook these in rice porridge when i was growing up! I've never tried them roasted, but i want to try it like that now!
She showed a picture of a ginkgo that is next to the tombstones of all of the people that ate from it 💀💀💀
I've missed the Fruity Fruits tune. Always makes me smile. 😁😁😁
Smells like poo, like poison ivy, can cause seizures when consumed in large quantities. Meh, why the hell not. 🤷🏻♀️
333 333 oh shit
And they can explode while cooking.
Threadbare_Saint right lol!
Tingle Tiger ASMR oh I never know it
@333 333 people say a lot in the comments, for a myriad of reasons. If she seized from having one of these seeds, it would be in a medical journal somewhere
I live in CT and I've seen and smelled the fruits of these trees before lol. I have seen one person ever picking them and I thought he was crazy 😂 I learned something new today!
Me: "Emmy, your voice is SO soothing; could you tell me a bedtime story"?
Emmy: "F You"!!!
Me: "Awww, that's one of my favorites".
I’m glad I watched this video before messing with ginkgo fruit/nuts. Lots of precautions I wouldn’t have known about. Thanks!
It’s my bday Emmy ☺️
Happy birthday today is my husband's birthday too 😂
Aw thank you guys! 😊
Happy Birthday!🎂
emmymadeinjapan omg!! Thank you and for your amazing videos!!
Omigoodness!! Grew up on an acre lot that had both Male and female gingko trees...beautiful dight. Totally validate the stinkiness!! Never knew the nuts could be eaten! Wow!
So when you touch the fruit it gives you a chemical burn, it smells like death and causes seizures...
Sounds like nature telling you dont eat it😂
But as humans and being the highest on the food chain we will still try. This is why we have so many stupid people. Darwin used to handle that but the more advanced we become then the more stupid movie survive things. Oof
@@dontdiscriminatehateeveryo9263 we aren't the highest on any food chain but we are persistent.
@@JenIsHungry We eat or have eaten pretty much everything and are the primary prey of nothing now. We used to be in the middle, but since we industrialized I'm pretty sure we're a few rungs above the food chain now. A lion or a hyena can hunt any prey,
We can choose whether or not *lions get to exist* .
HAAAA, lol. When my daughter was a toddler we called them “stinky cheese trees”! But beware lest ye get the fruit pulp stuck in your stroller tires!!
Thank You, Emmy, for the preparation tutorial! The tree in my neighbourhood fruits one-year-on/one-year-off. This year is an "On" year and the tree branches are already drooping under the weight of all the fruit, so I'm going nut hunting in about a month or so! I'll be sending good thoughts your way as I do!
I feel like there are waaaaaay too many downsides to this. They stink, you cant touch them, you can only eat a few, and they are way hard to harvest.. 😂
I'm here because there's one on the block I live on. I always research everything and see the actual intended purpose because everything that's on the earth is here for a reason and served a purpose. Thank you for this very informative video.
My friend's neighbor has one and the fruit drops into the yard constantly. My friend has chickens and that is the only item that chickens will not eat
Carmelo Pappalardo 😂😂😂
Hey Emmy I foraged and dried Gingko nuts this year for the first time. I'm here in NJ and our Gingko trees dropped their fruit back in late September and early October so I'm suprised you found them this late in the year.
I agree who ever thought lets eat this smelly stuff?
Since they've been around for forever and people didn't have the same hygiene then they may not have noticed the smell. If you smell and everyone around you smells then this might not seem bad. Just a theory though.
I do learn something every time I watch one of your videos 😁
“Check your shoes. What’s that smell?”
😷😷😷
I’d love to learn more about the things you as a family do rhythmically per the seasons, like this video for example.
"How to forage and cook ginko nuts" Oh cool I know where there are some ginko tre-- nevermind I changed my mind by the end of the title
I collected about 20 ginko fruits two weeks ago, from the sidewalk. I don't think their odor quite rises to dog poop, but not exactly Yankee Candle, either. I had no idea what to do with them. I just followed your recipe, roasted 10 of them...addictive! So good! (cue Spongebob card, "10 minutes later")
- My tongue feels weird, like it's coated in something.
