Hey brother, I started telling friends and family I was stump grinding and put it out on Facebook with just a picture of the stump grinder. After I got 3-4 jobs lined up for one day I went and rented the machine and had to teach myself how to use it. First stump took me awhile but after that it was easy. I just took it slow. I have taught several friends how to do this since then and all of them are making $ on the side. Let me know if you have any other questions. Word of mouth is best practice for sure. Side note: you don't have to go bid jobs, you can just have people lay a tape measure over the stump and send you a picture. Then you can give them a ballpark estimate based on that. Saves a ton of time
We do carry insurance; I know some people who do not but it's really up to how much risk you are willing to assume. Insurance for stump grinding alone is actually very reasonable, you can pay the 6-month premium in one day if you do it right. The rental places in my area almost exclusively rent to businesses, residential customers are not near as prevalent for these types of machines. Thanks for watching!
