When I was young, you had one HNIC game on Saturday night, and a game on Wednesday night (I believe on CTV) as the only two nights that hockey was on tv. Now, virtually every game from around the league is available to watch. How can you possibly make any televised game special unless the actual game is, for whatever reason, special.
I'll be honest. HNIC has been garbage since Rogers took over. When they were run by CBC, they were the best hockey broadcast on the planet. No one could touch them. Now, Saturday nights are a glorified weekend on FSN. I like some of the people, like Bieksa and Amber, and keeping Ron around was a good call, but Rogers' version of HNIC was stale from the beginning. They were so incompetent they made George Stroumbolopolous the anchor. CBC Sports until 2005 was the best sports broadcaster in the world. Rogers Sportsnet is passable for weekday stuff, but for the flagship weekend doubleheader, only CBC can do it right and just because it airs simultaneously on CBC doesn't mean it's the same quality. I used to watch HNIC even when the Canucks weren't involved because it was a great show. Now it's barely watchable.
I don't like how Rogers shoves the leaf's games down are throats every Saturday night at 4pm no matter if they were playing on Mars when there are other Canadian teams that we would rather watch

I really miss the old HNIC. It’s too corporate now. Among other things. Well said.

The only time I watch a leaf's game is when they play the Canucks other than that I couldn't care less of the leaf's !!!
