So I discovered this game around a month ago thanks to Vinesauce. He only played a small portion of the game, but it was enough to make me interested in playing it (since I am interested in literally ANY RPG that never saw the light of day outside Japan). Despite the weirdness of it, it became one of the most memorable games I've played on the PS1.
I always have a hard time getting these kind of "Thorhigheelsilesque" reviews, but at least the unique preferences of the author do shine through and it is heartwarming in a way. I think that is the feeling Laika has used to enchant its newfound audience.
Mara, I just discovered your channel two days ago and it’s all I’ve been watching. I love each of your videos and how genuine you come across. You are unapologetically yourself, and I will watch every new video you put out because of that.

I remember seeing this game get mentioned in a 4chan /vr/ thread, and I just had to check it out. Thanks for making a video covering this game. I really didn't want to watch a full playthrough of this game, so it makes me glad to see that there's a video doing a quick rundown on it.
Thank you so much for this video. Planet Laika is close to my heart, having fallen in love with the idea when I was younger after coming across a short review in an American magazine when it first came out. I actually managed to get a hold of a copy of the game a few years later, and attempted a (very confusing) blind playthrough of it with almost no knowledge of Japanese. The translation release a few years back felt like a personal gift, and I was surprised by how funny and charming the game manages to be despite its very dark themes. It's definitely one of my favorite games despite its flaws, and it was so wonderful to hear someone talk about it as passionately as you do here. ❤
Dear Mara(nov). I came into your channel because of your Hylics video, and subscribed instantly. Then, looking at your other videos, I watched this review and was really thrilled. It's my last day of vacation from work and I just finished thisbizarre and wonderful ride (I usually don't have much time to play videogames now, so I went through the whole thing in 3 days), and I'd like to thank you for your contagious excitement! Getting to know the game, its characters and deeply immerse myself on its themes was one of the greatest experiences of my life. And the whole "unavailable in English for over 20 years until 3 fans translated it" thing is also fascinating. Thank you for your channel, and lots of love from a Brazilian fan. Wish you the best, Brunonov 😆
@@maraganger Deeply! And I really love your videos, even for stuff I haven't played / don't have the hardware to play. Keep the great work, and thanks again!
I want to say "sick Mara's covering a game with Jungian vibes that's awesome," but truthfully there's so many references and allusions I had several google tabs open while watching, and had to pause several times to get a brief summary and process it all. This is by far your best work and my favorite to date! Happy New Year Mara you hit the ground running this year!
Jung is oft over stated as an influence in contemporary Western theology. Clearly some here for sure but he wasn't the revolutionary conventional wisdom likes to suggest. Many of the works that inspired him are far more interesting reads in many aspects. Much in the way modern nihilism is so acutely fixated on nietzieche, despite the likes of Spinoza being far closer to imagined ubermensch than Fred. Ancient Eastern theory is startling in how easy some of their thinkers can be compared with jungs archetypes and the Buddhist tradition as a whole had many writers who explored the modes of self and collective unconscious as jung did long before Freud. More effort in translation is needed. But there a rich world of writing to explore have not had the pleasure to do so already and are motivated to so, I am confident one would find the experience rewarding. Edit: also new sub great video. Reminds me of thorHH in style and thats a major compliment from me, being a big fan of his channel. Eager to work through the backlog here.
I really enjoyed this one, I'm glad I found it! You make so many great points that I whole heartedly agree with, and I am excited to go through your other videos!
Hearing about the plot in detail makes me think that it sounds less David Lynch and more Alejandro Jodorowsky because Laika is definitely something that wouldn't be out of place in his body of work maybe the team at Zeque were fans of The Holy Mountain.
@@maraganger wish you and this channel the best. Definitely have my support, and will dive down the rabbit hole of the rest of your content too! Keep up the great work!
Love these kind of videos. I really appreciate these analysis of obscure hidden gem that very few knows about. I too am one of those people who loves weird or particular stuff, that instead of simply running behind the consumers' preferences it isn't afraid of showing what the authors wanted to make. One day I'll definitely play this game. The entire concept is too interesting to me to pass over it.
Whenever I think I'm beginning to know the medium of video games.. something like this just pops up randomly and the false feeling is shattered once again. And I absolutely love it. Thanks for the video! Cheers.
Rocker! Awesome video on a super cool game! Thanks for making this video!! Super agree with your ideas and message at the end of the video, it's things I've been thinking and realizing a lot through life.
As someone who loves psychology and delving into mental states and the like, getting to really understand someone by their very mind, the fact that there is a game that is all about Dissociative Identity Disorder is incredibly fascinating to me. I wonder what other games may be about the condition?
There is a canon-standalone case in ace attoeney called "Turnabout Storyteller" that explores DID topics in a really unique way for the detective genre in or outside of games.
Video was great! Loved it a lot and I look forward to more of your content I'm not usually one to critique cuz I know I'm not any better But I will say it took a while to finally get to the topic of the video. 5min+ can easily make somone loose their engagement. It's nice to know how you feel about the games from that era in comparison to today's games but I feel like it went on for a little too long. That's it really. Wonderful video and once again looking forward to more!
You should totally share the tunes used in the video. A lot of tracks i kinda seem to recognize but can't, for the life of me, remember where did i heard them... or maybe they are from the OST of 'Planet Laika'? I do recognize, in some other or your other videos, songs from 'Killer 7'.... great soundtrack. Top notch edition, a lot of style and very good narration; hopefully your channel will grow as greatly as the experiences you shared with many of us. Congratulations, Mara, for continouslly embarking on this strange journey of the bizarre but endearing, and taking the time to making it confy and insigthfull for the internet.

Couldn't have knew otherwise, if not for your attentive answer. Cheers!
Xenogears does what this game did but with a slow, stead, strong crescendo. But this game hits you with all those ideas of personality, fracture, mentality, good/evil, individuality/collectivism all at once hahaha.
These are the style of videos that I look for on UA-cam, thank the UA-cam algorithm gods for recommending this channel to me because my search has finally found a destination
I'm in the same boat as you in preferring looking for the obscure and forgotten in my media. This is a great video. I'm in. Let's get digging and find some awesome games.
@@maraganger I relate a lot to the idea that you don't need to justify something as perfect to enjoy it, that sometimes you can just find yourself adoring an imperfect mess and it needs no justification. A lot of my favourites -- The Silver Case, Travis Strikes Again, Moon, Zero Escape, a good chunk of the Sonic franchise - they aren't objectively perfect games that will make a quadrillion wulongs in the Western market. But I also love them, and not often in spite of their flaws but _because_ of them. It's one of the reasons I stopped watching the ProCrastinators Podcast; if someone wasn't out there asserting something was shit because the internet said so, then it was another person laughing and apologizing for liking something the others thought was lame. It was painful. It was sophomoric, and embarrassing. If you love something, if something means a lot to you, just love it. It doesn't need to be the most innovatively reverse-engineered Enjoyment MachineTM on Earth. It doesn't need to get perfect scores on its Game Design 101 exam. The fact that it strikes a chord with you, is enough justification. The themes and expressions you highlighted through Laika were very interesting too. Inspiring, almost. It's right up my alley. So, I'll have to check it out later. Yeah, this was a good watch. My intuition was right. I've needed more perspectives like this, so I'm looking forward to see your channel grow in the near future. Good luck!
Another gem, dredged from the depths of obscurity, to call home on your channel. The way you talk about this game is fascinating, like it almost doesn't exist just from the sheer scope and ambition of its themes, narrative, mechanics and subject matter; there's hidden gems and then there's what you bring to the table! I know I've probably said it before but the PS1 and 2 (more so 1) era is a trove of concepts and ideas that, ironically, are fresher and more engaging than almost anything in the medium in the past decade. I think the reason for that was that the medium, while trying to find it, was free of convention. There wasn't a standard for 'this is how it should control and play and feel', thereby allowing games to truly *be*, and I feel like your vid and views and the game itself, really speaks to that creative phenomenon. I don't know if that makes sense but it's like, older games like this stray so far from convention not because it was trying to, but because there were no conventions and ideas to stray from in the first place, resulting in a unique and incidental piece of art within the medium. Someday, somehow, I hope I'll get around to playing this because it sounds unlike anything I've ever experienced or even heard of. Your vids are always nothing short of thought-provoking and I love the way you perfectly entwine your views and thoughts on the medium as a whole with the games that you cover. Love the vid, can't wait to see what you come up with next! :)
Omg what a nice and thoughtful comment ! I absolutely agree with you, the medium at the time felt incredibly fresh because of that certain lack of norms to follow. It was kinda just "make" instead of "make for this sort of demographic" and I miss that sort of creative freedom attached to each game. So happy you've enjoyed this vid, I'll make sure next is just as good. B)
I came here in search of answers for Planet Laika but there are still questions that remain; such as are these even real memories the characters experience? There are several references to hallucination of past events, and if the past personalities they knew are not distorted or twisted by the Evil Mind's delusions that Commander October (whose name alludes to the October revolution) claims over intercom from Earth aren't truly real. Madam Agatha, the Martian who aids you, also says ''This planet's powers can conjure lies and project false memories.'' It seems too coincidental for each character to each have such extreme memories. Yet although Captain Tadler is said to have actually known a Chloe back on earth in passing by April who corroborated one of the captain's hallucinations... We are also not quite sure why the colonists on Mars don't themselves experience hallucinations or are they immune to it? Delusional though they are, their egos distorted inwardly, yet how did the main characters of the crew who go to explore all appear to be intact in their egos enough to truly become astronauts and very functional for the level of paralysis and mental disassociation one would have expected their personality faculties to have had them undergo while still on Earth. Was that too another delusion, and were they only astronauts as part of the overall hallucination? Or was there just more Good Energy on Earth or did Mars make them unable to maintain the adjustment to reality - professionally envied by the outcasts and exiles - and the Freudian ego-principle in its balance with social responsibility, higher class careers as astronauts before Mars makes them go AWOL? And if they indeed knew about these delusions, as is said, why did they choose willingly to enter into Mars' atmospheric field without some form of psychological protection?
I just found this channel and I'm 1 minute 53 seconds into this video and you already know what I like. That intro alone perfectly sums up why I have loved digging through large amounts of obscure media for most of my life. This was especially true during the early otts because that whole era when the internet was still in its primordial infancy when garage sales and more niche ways of accessing content that is not as available to the general public apart from your standard retail was quite the time period. Now that the Internet is as colossal as it is there's so much media that is yet to be discovered which defies the conventional norms, heck I found my musical taste which fits that very definition just by going online. I've yet to watch the rest of this video but if you are reading this you already are slowly becoming one of my new fav channels even though I merely just dropped by. You're next to hazel and ThorHighHeels content, maybe a fusion of the two. I can't wait to see what Planet Laika has in store. Thank you so much and wonderful job so far on this one.
I did not remember watching your video on the digimon world DS games, but I did looked up for some content on them last year for pure nostalgia's sake, and I'm glad I did. This video was really a very nice experience to watch, I loved the visual identity of your editing and I also love to discover new obscure and niched media out there, that's how I got into some of my favourites, after all. Please keep on making these, they're really good. Also thanks for putting the roms translation link, I'm definitely checking that out. Greetings from Brazil.
@@maraganger just subbed, btw. Also, I do have some criticism: it would be nice to be a bit more mindful of the spoiler sections, I do understand that talking about something you find interesting is nice, but I had to skip some parts of the video so I can have a better experience on the game myself. Some major (just major is enough) spoiler warnings would be nice.
@@guilhermedamasceno343 Appreciate the criticism but there was a spoiler warning over halfway through the vid' ; at 31 minutes in, exactly. Everything prior to that is very minor and probably wouldn't hurt the overall experience. B)

Those final words really touched my heart. The final line was bursting with Resonant Power. I'm sad that discourse over video games, or even just media in general, has this stain of 'objectivity' on it. There are aspects that we love and hate and like and are middling on in everything we consume, and as much as we try to impress our opinions on other people, we cant MAKE them feel how we do about something. Even if it comes from a genuine love of it. I hope to finish this game some time, I'm gonna start soon. I never would have heard of it before tonight. I did notice a couple of references to at least one space epic in those final minutes, I hope to find more . Great video by the by, I loved those snazzy transitions, and your choice for music really set the right mood for it.
Tbh i havent even watched the vid (Its probably amazing) but i just wanted to say how much i am blown away by that thumbnail... like the colors composition and style … Like how tf did you even make it??
didnt even know there was an artbook thats cool. ur thumbnails are easily some of the best ive seen on here and are super eye catching, even when most of them dont use the games logo and is just visually striking art at that point
@@M4m4. thank you ! i'm particularly adverse to using titles / logos in thumbnails nowadays cause I feel like it ruins the composition or limits the screen estate. A lot to consider from a graphical point of view.
Aaa! I resonate with the whole intro so much. Particularly, the PS1 library was such a wild west of absolutely surreal games (games? Some feel more like virtual art instalations where I missed the brochure explaining the theme) and I looove all that weirdness. For real, so happy the algorithm brought me here. ❤
The last point you make at the end of enjoying what you like regardless how it makes you feel or can explain it really resonates with me and my own journey of realizing what I enjoy. Great video!

Also loved your slander of lazy old farts who denounce gaming without making the smallest effort to branch out of their current AAA comfort zone.
Wish you the best,
Brunonov 😆
Aw thank you ! I'm so glad it resonated with you. :>
Thank you so much Couch, I'm so glad you liked it ! Let's hope I keep pushing out bangers this new year. B)
As a simple person this game looked interesting. My first thought was "Laika, space dogs... oh, I get it!"
Aaaah yeah, lots of folks don't get the Laika, Russian Space Dog reference despite it being quite on the nose haha !

I really enjoyed this one, I'm glad I found it! You make so many great points that I whole heartedly agree with, and I am excited to go through your other videos!
Aw thank you so much ! ; w ;
Hearing about the plot in detail makes me think that it sounds less David Lynch and more Alejandro Jodorowsky because Laika is definitely something that wouldn't be out of place in his body of work maybe the team at Zeque were fans of The Holy Mountain.
Finally. I have found the channel my soul has long searched for. These comments also tell me many a like minds have collected here. Warms the soul.

The art direction of persona suddenly makes a lot of sense.
I just got recommended this by the algorithm. Great content!

Rocker! Awesome video on a super cool game! Thanks for making this video!!
Super agree with your ideas and message at the end of the video, it's things I've been thinking and realizing a lot through life.
Thank you, glad the vid resonated with you ! :>
As someone who loves psychology and delving into mental states and the like, getting to really understand someone by their very mind, the fact that there is a game that is all about Dissociative Identity Disorder is incredibly fascinating to me. I wonder what other games may be about the condition?
If you're looking for more titles that delve into the topic, Killer7 is a pretty good example and one of my faves ! :>
Watch some videos about Xenogears, that game has what you're looking for.
There is a canon-standalone case in ace attoeney called "Turnabout Storyteller" that explores DID topics in a really unique way for the detective genre in or outside of games.
I don’t think I’ve ever really used this word before but this game looks absolutely “bonkers”‼️
Great job on the retrospective. 👏🏽

I'm not usually one to critique cuz I know I'm not any better
But I will say it took a while to finally get to the topic of the video.

Xenogears does what this game did but with a slow, stead, strong crescendo. But this game hits you with all those ideas of personality, fracture, mentality, good/evil, individuality/collectivism all at once hahaha.

I relate a lot to the idea that you don't need to justify something as perfect to enjoy it, that sometimes you can just find yourself adoring an imperfect mess and it needs no justification.
Good luck!
@@mythosinfinite6736 Thank you, I'm so glad it resonated with you that much ! ; w ;
The intro describes my taste in video games perfectly ❤
