Written or verbal directions would be really helpful, esp for auditory learners like myself. Also listing the supplies, yarn weight, hook size, types of hook it can be done on....there is just so much left unsaid/unspecified that causes difficulties for newbies to Tunisian crochet.
Knowing yarn weight and sizes of hooks doesn't matter for lessons in types of stitches as you're just making swatches. That's only necessary when actually making a project like a shawl or afghan so that the size ends up correct. When I'm browsing UA-cam to learn new stitches like this, I use the same ball of yarn and the same hooks for all the videos. (The skein of yarn will tell you the hook size for that yarn). As far as types of hooks, it pretty much goes without saying that you need a tunisian hook to do a tunisian stitch. For beginners, it is easier to have a bigger size hook than what you'd normally use for crochet. I would like to know the name of this stitch though, it's very pretty and I want to bookmark this under the name of the stitch.
I hope this comment will help all the beginners that are asking for more specific instructions... when you're just learning and practicing a stitch, you don't need to use the same yarn and size of hook that is in the video. That's why some leave that information out of the video. Correct size and weight of yarn and hooks are only necessary when following instructions for a project so that the finished product will be the right size. Use any weight/type of yarn you want for learning stitches, and the yarn label will tell you what size hook is recommended for that yarn. Just for a tip though, for Tunisian crochet, it's helpful for beginners to go up a size or two for the hook. Some types of stitches require a specific formula for the number of stitches and she gave the formula. Maybe it'll help to elaborate for people that don't understand this. It says at the beginning "5+3 ch", and if you don't know what that means, then you should really watch some beginning instructions for crochet. It means that you chain any multiple of five, then add three stitches. It depends on how big you want your swatch. I count my chain in "fives", then when it looks big enough, I add 3 more. Or you can multiply, like 5 x 4 = 20, + 3 = 23, for example. I hope this helps, I love to spend some time learning a bunch of new stitches and I use the same ball of yarn and same hooks no matter the stitch. Keeps it simple and inexpensive for just making swatches with scrap yarn.
This is a very cool pattern thankyou. I tried this and follow your instructions but why did mine was curved and bending into circle. Perhaps a little tips ?
That's not too uncommon with many Tunisian stitches, and with some Knit stitches. There are many videos that can give you tips for preventing that as best as possible. The various methods will depend on your taste. Blocking after the project is over helps, as does adding a border to the finished project. Another thing you can try is going up a size or two with your Tunisian hook than what is specified on the yarn label. I'm noticing from these comments that a lot people should spend some time watching basic crochet, knit, or tunisian crochet videos. All these questions are basic and this is not a basic stitch. All the information needed to learn this stich IS in the video yet people are asking her to give beginners lessons. She's simply sharing a pretty, non-beginners stitch. Beginning, basic stitch lesson videos will answer all the questions I'm seeing in the comments.
Did you ever get it to stop curling up? Mine curls up like Crazy! The reply you got was so condescending. It is an easy stitch actually and I've never experienced this level of unmanageable curl in a Tunisian stitch before and I'd like some advice too.
I hope all these comments from people saying you should give verbal instruction and more specific instruction doesn't discourage you from making these videos.. Most of us that know anything about crochet, know that when making swatches that we don't need someone to tell us the size of yarn and hooks and we can also follow what you're doing just fine :) Remember that it's the people that have complaints that comment more than the people that are fine with the video as it is. I do wish I knew the name of the stitch though, but you must not know the specific name for this type of tunisian stitch. That's okay, I'm still glad you shared it, it's unique!
There are positive opinions as well as negative opinions. That doesn't deter me. I'm trying to teach as much as possible here. This stitch is a stitch made with Tunisian crochet. I'm glad you like it too. Thanks 🙏
