Avi, props to you for pointing out that end users cannot modify parameters in the Power BI website. This is frequently overlooked when showing the parameter feature. I would argue that Microsoft made a HUGE mistake when leaving this feature out because there is a massive difference between a filter (slicer) and query criteria. I think MS did this to reduce the need for data to be pulled back and forth between on-premise server and power bi site. Another seriously limiting factor is that, in larger organizations, it is incredibly common to have data segregated into different databases due to company structure/setup of an accounting/billing/ERP database. The need to maintain 1 dashboard and switching up the connected database is extremely common however, the lack of the parameter feature and Power BI's fundamental approach to data make this necessity an almost impossible task to execute. Anyway, thanks again for the video, hopefully MS will fix this. They did add the ability for users to alter the QUERY parameters in the query section of the power bi site but again, that's not something you would want the users to have to manipulate, there needs to be a way to do this directly from the dashboard.

Thanks for your great tutorial! I think that the parameter is the weakest point in Power BI comparing with tableau. Tableau can handle dimensions/measures/data filtering in a very flexible and dynamic way with parameters especially by end users. This should be improved to be used by over existing other BI users.

Hi, about the workarounds.. i would love to learn more about the option #2 to have users input their parameter value using some other mechanism.. Here is my scenario, every users have their own access key (string), and I have to pass the access key value into the power bi report’s data source.. and the data source are using the get data from web (api url). So, it would call the api which is include the access key in url.. but i have no idea how to get the access key from end users and pass it into the data source which using api method to get data.. thank you so much

Thanks.. just spent a day.. trying to figure out why parameters where not working... Finally an answer. My second thought was Power App, updates a control table with from and to dates. and refresh the data using a stored procedure using the user entry of from and to dates. The only thing, this works if its one user.. but not simultaneous users.. thank you for the info

This is great, however when you have a dataset over 1.7 billion rows I think param selection should really be something easily applied to pbi models. Loading this amount of data into a model just won't work all.

It is very important to have query parameters accessible through power bi reports. Without this i see very limited use of PBI. So, In direct query end report user can select the period they wish to see data from huge historic data. Actually it is blocker in Enterprise reporting.

That Power BI query parameters can be changed only from the desktop application is my biggest beef with Power BI. I absolutely love the cleanness of Power BI report design and myriad of options that it brings to the table in visualization. However, I would also love to be able to empower my users to input query parameters (numeric ones, in particular) from a cleaner front-end than SSRS ' dated report design.

But for now here's a quick version of what I have in mind ➔ Keep the Parameter in Excel file and then use very fast refreshes (15-minute Refresh) to refresh the report based on that Parameter set in Excel file ➔ Keep the Parameter in SQL Server. Hey Avi, The use case I am looking for is providing one logic for a benchmark report with aggregated data for all users and customer specific information for each client only. Clients should not be able to see data from other clients. Would that be a parameter based on log-in credentials, parameter based row level security or duplicating reports with a paramter for the publisher only? It should be pretty secure to avoid hacking. Hi Avi, Can we use Parameters created in Desktop like other normal filters in PowerBI Web Service? I think we need to use Report Builder or SSRS for it? I am very interested in having end-users enter Power BI query parameters. SSRS is very rigid and limiting in many ways; Power BI can offer so much more. For example, I work for an international manufacturing company with a list of ~250k materials, I would like users to enter the material number so I can pull up data through multiple queries that will run very fast on one material but cannot possibly run on all the materials. The data can then be summarized with drill downs for historical use, future demand, current purchase orders, current inventory and locations, etc. Currently this not an option. Very frustrating.

Thanks Avi. My business case 10 small companies. I am building a common report. When I parametrize, I do not want one company to see other company's data. IT looks like that is not acheivable by query parameters as If a user goes to edit queries, he will see all company data. Any comments ?

The Excel files are saved on daily basis in folder with current date. So whenever the Power bi open today or Last date report should reflect and if user want to check previous report they have access to that.

Karen, how is the subset (1000 serial numbers) being decided? Do you have the 1000 Serial Numbers listed out somewhere? Perhaps coming in from another source, another file etc. What I would do is pull the list of 1000 Serial Numbers from a File (or wherever it's coming from)...and then Merge my Data with this list, then filter only where there is a match. It's far simpler than it sounds. Hi Kapil, Thanks so much for being a subscriber🙏🏻 Parameters take effect when the Data is refreshed (so when the Queries inside the Query Editor run). e.g. Parameters can help you filter the data at refresh so you query only years 2015-2020. Page Filters take effect after that. So you can select your year (say 2019) or a month (say Jan). But you (or any user interacting with the report or creating their own report connected to your model) can change them as they wish. So these can be a lot more flexible. This is great, however when you have a dataset over 1.7 billion rows I think param selection should really be something easily applied to pbi models. Loading this amount of data into a model just won't work all.
I've found I can pass the parameter to the SQL invoked by the M query to filter directly at the server.

Ola, there isn't a way right now I think in "Query Parameters" to select Multiple Values.

You can of course also feed in a list of values from an External File (e.g. an Excel or CSV or Text file - with a list of Selected Values).

It is very important to have query parameters accessible through power bi reports. Without this i see very limited use of PBI.
So, In direct query end report user can select the period they wish to see data from huge historic data. Actually it is blocker in Enterprise reporting.
I’m confused. Why not just use a slicer?
i think, this is easy sample to use. Of course best way is other tecniq. but like sample is perefect.

That Power BI query parameters can be changed only from the desktop application is my biggest beef with Power BI. I absolutely love the cleanness of Power BI report design and myriad of options that it brings to the table in visualization. However, I would also love to be able to empower my users to input query parameters (numeric ones, in particular) from a cleaner front-end than SSRS ' dated report design.
I'd love to see how the workaround of how to get parameter-like functionality by allowing end users to edit an external Excel spreadsheet.

I will plan a video on this later. But for now here's a quick version of what I have in mind
➔ Keep the Parameter in Excel file and then use very fast refreshes (15-minute Refresh) to refresh the report based on that Parameter set in Excel file
➔ Keep the Parameter in SQL Server. Connect to it using DirectQuery. This should impact the Power BI Report immediately (I still have to try this option)

Sushant, I'm glad you enjoyed this video. Yes, it's kinda neat how Parameters work in SSRS (where they can be passed from the Front-End ll the way back to the Data Source in the Back-End). Power BI (at least right now) works differently and often throws SSRS Report Creators off. But you can make things work with a slightly different approach.

The use case I am looking for is providing one logic for a benchmark report with aggregated data for all users and customer specific information for each client only. Clients should not be able to see data from other clients.
Would that be a parameter based on log-in credentials, parameter based row level security or duplicating reports with a paramter for the publisher only? It should be pretty secure to avoid hacking.

I am very interested in having end-users enter Power BI query parameters. SSRS is very rigid and limiting in many ways; Power BI can offer so much more. For example, I work for an international manufacturing company with a list of ~250k materials, I would like users to enter the material number so I can pull up data through multiple queries that will run very fast on one material but cannot possibly run on all the materials. The data can then be summarized with drill downs for historical use, future demand, current purchase orders, current inventory and locations, etc. Currently this not an option. Very frustrating.

Thanks Avi. My business case 10 small companies. I am building a common report. When I parametrize, I do not want one company to see other company's data. IT looks like that is not acheivable by query parameters as If a user goes to edit queries, he will see all company data. Any comments ?

In my case I need a parameter when I choose a languages (English, German, Spanish, etc) This parameter wil be used to change differente attribute in a desnormalized table whose it have EN_Country_Name , GER_Country Name, SP_country_name. Yes that should be possible.
I hope you're not trying to create an SSRS style report where you select a lot of parameters. Power BI doesn't work best that way.

Example user can select year then month then date. With the help of slicer.
The Excel files are saved on daily basis in folder with current date.
So whenever the Power bi open today or Last date report should reflect and if user want to check previous report they have access to that.

Thanks for sharing your #WIN. That is awesome. I really enjoyed my journey of learning Power BI (it's so full of awesomeness!). And I love witnessing my students (inside my course) and followers (on UA-cam) go on the same journey.
My best approach to show only completed months is the "Current Month Offset" in Ultimate Calendar Table.
I use that to filter the Report, rather than solving it in DAX. I think that's much simpler and a lot more flexible to fit many scenarios (example, you can easily show the Last 3 Completed Months).

I have the complete list of part serial numbers_ millions of them, how do I filter the whole report using just a subset (1000 serial numbers) at once?

Do you have the 1000 Serial Numbers listed out somewhere? Perhaps coming in from another source, another file etc.
What I would do is pull the list of 1000 Serial Numbers from a File (or wherever it's coming from)...and then Merge my Data with this list, then filter only where there is a match.

Parameters take effect when the Data is refreshed (so when the Queries inside the Query Editor run).
e.g. Parameters can help you filter the data at refresh so you query only years 2015-2020.
Page Filters take effect after that. So you can select your year (say 2019) or a month (say Jan). But you (or any user interacting with the report or creating their own report connected to your model) can change them as they wish. So these can be a lot more flexible.

Hi Misael. My advice, forget about sending a query back to source to change values...Power BI does not work that way. (So no Query Parameters)
Pull all the data and just let users make the selection using Slicer.
