I agree with what Ashin Sarana has explained about the values of the commentaries and how the Buddha used Mt. Meru in describing things allegorically. But, this does not mean we can take the values of geological and astrological descriptions of the Mt. Meru literally since they are all from Brahmin sources described in Vedas. These values were highly regarded by people of the ancient India as valid points and took them literally. This Brahmin culture is deeply rooted in Buddhist countries entwined with the Buddhist literature and thus, the descriptions of its size explained by Ashin Sarana seemed to have been accepted by the Buddha when he used it to compare the magnitude of the things he had described. The Vedas, like the Bible are full of stories ( e.g. vimana or flying chariots/UFO and the war of the gods using powerful weapons like atomic bombs) that could not be easily explained or understood by people of that era. Thus, a lot of metaphorical descriptions were used to help understand and comprehend in the mind set of those people at that time. They may not be applicable or true in this era when we can see and appreciate objects in an universal scale!

Another caution on the commentaries! There are two stories in the Pitakka Canon, one is about a Brahmin who could tell where a deceased person lies after dying by knocking on the skull, and another story is about the God Baka Brahma. In both stories the Buddha asked the other two opponents to look for someone 'in a challenge of power'. Both the Brahmin and Baka could not find the person(s) in question (one was an Arahat and the other was the Buddha himself). The two opponents were so skilful in their arts that they could find anyone in any place in the universe (samsara), and were astounded when they found themselves defeated by the Buddha. The Buddha did not explain where he was hiding or the Arahat, but the commentaries tried to explain using their knowledge that the Buddha and the Arahat was hiding between the two eyebrows of the observers in sub-atomic scale. Thus, a Burmese phrase emerges "Myet Khone Hmwe Paw Zingyan Shauk" to describe the power or ability by strolling between the two eyebrows so that the observer could not see. This allegory may seem perfect but it was not what the Buddha had explained NOR it was the case! In reality, the only place where these two great skilful opponents could not find the Buddha or the Arahat is the 'Nibbana', which a non-enlightened person could never reach or observe. It is a perfect place to hide if you want to defeat a powerful opponent, supposing Nibbana is a place, which in fact, it isn't!!!

Good Bhikkhu. Yes greed is in different level for different people. Wise Bhikkhu. Do not reject simply you do not believe. Do not believe just because your friend believe. Practice and experience it then believes.
I have experience it so i am here to tell you to go and practice SATIPATHANA mind purifications and see it for yourselves. You don't have to believe now. You too can taste the ceesation of self. (body, feelings, perception, conciouseness they are the whole spectrum in disguise that make you ignorance and they are the cause that make you believe in SELF.
These 4 factors are fabrications of the mind. Thus seeing these 4 subtle mental fabrication, self is seen and self does not exist.
A sotopanna sees these subtle mental fabrication are the cause of karma that takes one being to endless birth and decay.

Mahayana claims the Heart Sutra, Lotus Sutra, Diamond Sutra, etc are the words of the Buddha too. They could make all the same arguments you're making about how foolish it would be to ignore the words of these enlightened people.
But you'd still reject these teachings. Why if it's equivalent to what you're saying? If it's not, how is it not equivalent?

The Principle Text of Buddhism is the Dhamapada...found on the pillar edict of King Ashoka with the 5 Nikayas...get the Book Original Teachings of the Buddha by George Grimm and check out Ken Wheeler who has been translating ancient Pali for 10 years and is a metaphysician. He proves that buddha NEVER taught Anatta or No-Soul doctrine and that he was simply using Neti-Neti...this monk cannot speak Pali and is just repeating foolishness.
