Cool. Was in the garden center last week and they had rather big and high straight vases. Meant for orchids, but that's not going to stop me from buying one to create a waterworld in it.
We don't have NutriBase, but over here in the US we do have two products that seem to be very similar, but a different color: CaribSea EcoComplete, and Petco's in-store brand, Imagitarium Black Active Planted Substrate.
Thank you. That video was actually shot on my living room table which was before the house with the shed. Fun fact...my wife said I wasn't allowed a 2nd aquarium so I waited until she was away for the weekend and did it anyway 😂😂
@@MDFishTanksI’d love to know the story…. Is there a section for that? I’m a newbie and I LOVE your channel so sooo much. I aspire to even a fraction of your greatness. But how did this all begin??? How did you get here? What do you do exactly? Is it a fish store?

As an American, it made me chuckle hearing you say "... an inch and an inch..." describing the substrate depths. You also took into account that we cant find nutribase easily as well. Very cool of you. I've watched your stuff for a long time. It's awesome watching you grow as a channel. You make great videos that I find very inspirational. Thank you for all you do.
I started one in a giant wine glass. Inspired by this channel. I made a rock scape and a twisted piece of wood that looks like a bansai tree that pokes out the top. I put air plants on the top of the wood to make it look like a tree. I used aqua soil in it and put water plants in there. I have two minows in there. when I went to start my second one in a large vase I took some plants from the first one. I was recently surpised to find baby fish hatched out of the plants. 😂 They're so cute and enjoyable. They've been going strong about 10 months now with no issues.
I have been extremely discouraged and disappointed in my fish aquarium hobby. Lots of dead fish and plants. Sometimes my water parameters were great. Then an ammonia spike. The water changes were killing my back. Bucket method. At any rate I have given up. 4 years of trying and failing. But, I may try the plants in the vase/container method. Perhaps, I can succeed with that. I am always getting wonderful inspiration from you.
I have a Walstad 5 gallon cylinder vase for my male betta. It does require more maintainence than you'd expect for a Walstad, especially one that's been active for a year, but I enjoy the tank. My betta seems to enjoy it a lot.
You know, many of the plants we have in our aquariums come from areas that will flood, then dry out. So they are used to going into an emergent mode with different leaves and stems capable of holding up in the gravity. Some will die back, except for the roots/bulbs they sprout anew as the rains fall. Love seeing your work.
I have watched similar ecosystem and no filter aquarium videos, but MD videos are perfect because I find them all relaxing, fascinating, and relatable. I bought my first 3.5 gallon bowl so I am ready to go and try for the first time ever. Thank you 😊
I was so glad to see how you handled plants that wouldn't stay in the substrate. That is one problem I have that I haven't seen you address. I have a medium sized bowl that I've planted after watching your channel. It started when I dismantled my aquarium after the last snail died. I still had an annubias nana and I didn't want to toss it, so I've been trying out different planters and have added a few more plants like Java fern, etc. It's on my desk on a bamboo platform with an attached overhead light. I haven't added any snails or shrimp because I don't want to deal with any more death :(
Hi, loving your videos. Thanks for taking the time to make and share them. Do you have a video explaining your setup for filling your tanks? It looks like you have some plastic pipe fittings and a valve on a hose? I’ve struggled to work out a way of easily doing water changes in our tanks. At the moment, we have to feed our garden hose through a door or window!

i have the same 3 vases from Ikea and decided to make it an planted aquarium. Although i added small HoB filters just to make it more sustainable for the fishes and shrimps i added 😅
I’ve had my ‘tiny tower’ going since December ( second one ) which has done amazingly with nothing but water changes every week. You can find it over at AF-UK 😉
A big 500ml syringe is ideal for doing waterchanegs on these and even nano tanks if you dont need to do big water changes. No mess with a syringe, water your house plants with it, or blast it 40 foot up your garden through the window lol. I also keep a 5L jug of water under the sink so the chlorine can off gas, saves money on dechlorinator.
Very nice. I would love to go about making a no filter nano for shrimp, have you thought about doing any kind of written guides on a website or some such? I was wondering whether it would be ok to use rainwater freshly collected in my new water butt for something like that. Hmm.
