    I'm sorry this comment is so long:
    Mr Crilley, when you put the two faces side by side, my mind was practically blown! This video reminded me of a tutorial of yours I watched years ago- 'How to draw manga eyes: Male vs Female.' Of course, the eight-year-old me attempted to copy it for a "battle" scene (in the violent sport of rock, paper, scissors) for one of my comics! I had discovered your videos; and from then onwards watched them and I am now hooked onto manga! You're a great teacher! I'm still young, but I hope I will grow up to be like you and other great artists out there! I'm sure other viewers of yours think the same! Thanks for being awesome ^-^

    Thank you for these video tutorials, it's a nice surprise to find an illustrator giving help to the community beyond their books. Your tips helped me see that some of my instinct drawings got some things right about male faces vs. female faces. Watching your videos is like having a mentor to guide through drawing and writing. Thanks again (and I will be picking up your books in the future soon!)

But like, I'm recommending you every time somebody appreciate my drawings (I draw while in class :/) Your point-perspective videos are the ones I pay the most attention because of the magic of building things in two dimensions XD, and the narrative in the tutorials is just great for following up your demonstrations while fishing some good tips! I feel I have all the things I need to learn in your channel. Sincere thumbs up!

    Blushies! I love it when male characters have blushies! ^o^ Also thank you for being so cognizant of what's considered "feminine" and "masculine", i.e. that these are conventions used by illustrators. It's refreshing to hear a point of view that doesn't assume these traits as givens.

    He said something about artist tend to try and make male and female look different by exaggerating features, but I ended up laughing thinking, I watch way to much anime where you literally have to think for a little bit before you can decide what gender some characters are..

    • @Feathertail2205
      @Feathertail2205 8 років тому +7

      I know what you mean, but maybe he was referring a little more to older manga types. Just watched another video of his and I noticed that the male faces (prominently the eyes) had many sharper lines than the female faces. I noticed that a lot of the styles are from older Japanese animations, not the normal typical anime they've got now.

      yea if you were to draw feminine lips on a male it'll look weird and also it can tell the gender as well as the eyes( bigger eyes female. smaller\longer make)

    • @MidnaRocks1000
      @MidnaRocks1000 9 років тому +3

      +Andrew D. Usually, I've discovered that when you draw eyes facing directly forward, they're going to look at bit cross-eyed. The catch is that you have to make it subtle enough to look not actually cross-eyed.
      One thing I do when I have trouble drawing eyes is to make very light guide-lines from the irises to the object/direction they're looking at. Since eyes are apart but they're both looking at one thing, it should generally make a triangle, and the triangle will get bigger the further the object is from the face. I hope that helps!

    wow, I am so impressed by your efficiency. you don't ever seem to put a stroke out of line. I mean, I'm confident I could produce something of a similar standard but thats after a lot of touching up. making sure the eyes are balanced, the ears are in the right place the necks the appropriate size etc. you seem to knock it out of the park on the first try. amazing.

    Although this is really late. There are some manga artists that make their character(s) look both male and female and let the readers decide what the gender is. A good example of this is Hanji/Hange Zoe from Attack on Titan (manga not the anime)

    • @dylangordon7472
      @dylangordon7472 9 років тому

      +Andrew D. not to forget crona from soul eater. (who is ambiguous in both manga and anime)

    • @redicent
      @redicent 8 років тому

      But Hanji Zoe is a girl in attack on titan, both manga and anime.

    • @SuperKnight263
      @SuperKnight263 8 років тому

      Even though Hanji is voiced by a female VA in the anime, the writer himself, Isayama-sensei, does not want to confirm Hanji's gender. Thus making us free to decide whether Hanji is a male or a female.

    • @SuperKnight263
      @SuperKnight263 8 років тому

      Christine Wang but who knows!! fans might've confirmed this and i could be wrong. Or Hanji is indeed a non-binary character, like Hideyoshi, Crona, and many more!!

    Historically, males and females both actually had long hair generally, especially those of the upper class. Cutting your hair at all was considered taboo in a way, and only the poor did it, that is, if they could afford the tools. And then they had a really messed up looking haircut, because they did it themselves with old shears. Of course, this is just a generalization, but. . . .
    On a side note, I tend to draw a lot of long-haired male characters. I don't know why, but I just love the look of it.

    • @ImFrelled
      @ImFrelled 10 років тому +7

      Actually, historically the wealthy shaved their heads and wore wigs. This prevented infestations of head lice, and other critters.

    • @cronajj
      @cronajj 10 років тому +5

      It depends on when and where, but yes, that happened at one time too. Although, I'm not so sure about the shaving of their heads part. I know that during a part of the Renaissance, people wore wigs powdered with mercury to kill lice, but that didn't mean they shaved their heads. (The unfortunate side effect, of course, was that their hair could often fall out from mercury poisoning.)

    Fascinating, and very helpful. What I found interesting is that when you started the changes I saw the face change from young boy to adult, which suggests to me that young girls and young boys would be pretty similar stylistically.

    When I make a manga, I want a character who either looks like a girl, is mistaken for a girl, but is actually a boy, or a character who looks like a boy, is mistaken for a boy, but is actually a girl.

    Looking through the comments, I noticed what NICE people watch your lessons! Everybody is supportive and helpful to one another! Where someone has suggested a topic for your next video, which has been done before, unbeknownst to them, either you give them a link to your previous video on that subject or one of your KIND subscribers does. So cool! Way to go, CRILLEY Subs!!!

    Dear God, Your work is awesome. and I know that it comes with a lot of practice, but it really seems like no effort at all for you. I love hearing your thought processes, and how critical you are about why you would do one thing or another. It really pushed me to be a bit more critical about why one of my characters would be doing something or have something and helped me to add substance to my drawings rather than just having a character standing in a blank page. I'm referring to your Dino rider picture you posted up a while ago.
    Thanks for all the help Mark.

    I've drawn a full body and split it down the center and made one side a man and the other side a woman! It was very interesting to see the difference in bone structure, muscle mass, and proportion. I'd love to see you do a video like that Please!!!
