These guns have gotten so expensive now. It's almost criminal to have a plastic rod in there! I am looking for a handgun and have many of the same issues your wife seems to have. I truly appreciate your video!
I've had one for years. My first pistol purchase. It doesn't feel like a toy pistol and shoots great. I've done no upgrades to mine just simply maintain it. 0 misfires in nearly ten years of owning it. I would definitely trust it with my life. I've always used good bullets though. Cci or Winchester 40 grain hollow points. Accurate enough I could keep a can in the air for a full clip. Ten round magazine is my only complaint recently swapped to a Beretta m9_22 for the 15 round clip. I prefer 22 for everyday carry cause I don't have to worry about shooting through my aggressor and hitting anything else. Real nice gun.
FYI TandemKross makes this spring rod using stainless steel. I picked one up at Optical Planet for $17.49 as they are on sale with free shipping. TandemKross also makes a five round magazine extension for SR22 called the Wingman. It turns the 10rd magazine into a 15rd magazine. Again Optical Planet has these on sale for $19.50 with free shipping. I bought three because I carry my SR22 when riding my bike I always try to have 20 to 30rds with me. Enjoy your Ruger it is a fun gun to shoot
I have a pretty good "casing extraction" issue and luckily a very minor "feed" issues. I've tried several ammo types and even tried the polishing fix!! Brassstacker was out of stock on the spring rod, so went ahead and bought the "Sentinel" Captured Spring Rod and replacement “Green Springs” Magazine Springs from TandemKross. Hope all my SR22 problems go away. I bought my SR22 in 2013, and only used 3-4 times with close to 1000 rounds total. This week, I was near trading it in because of the unreliability issues.
I had tons of failures to feed with the crappy plastic guide rod. I got the basic uncaptured steel one because it's cheaper than captured and honestly easier to clean imo.... then I went out and shot off a few hundred with no hangups, even with garbage ammo like winchester x or federal bulk..... NOICE
I bought a SR22 about 5 years ago and have put over 1000 rounds thru it and have never had any issues with it. When I bought it I had read about complaints on the guide rod but mine still looks like new so I am not to concerned about that. But I had never heard of a complaint on the ejector so seeing your video I checked mine and sure enough mine also has that burr which will soon be removed. Great video.
Thanks for taking the time to make and share this video. We are of a similar mindset - including about hammer fire vs. striker fire. Lots of good points and helpful tips in this video!
Forgot to mention - excellent video. After watching it, I checked my SR and sure enough, there was a burr on the extractor slot on the barrel. Fixed it (I hope). Many thanks.
I have a Ruger SR22, it is a great shooting little pistol and is the most comfortable gun I have ever held. The first thing I did to it was replace the polymer guide rod. I went with the Galloway Precision stainless guide rod and recoil spring. The one thing mine has an issue with, you can't shoot CCI Stingers or Federal Punch, after you have shot standard length 22lr, until you clean the chamber. Oh shoot, you are in Arkansas and you know the ORV park.👍 Looks like I found another channel that isn't posting videos anymore.🤦♂ I lived in Hot Springs, AR from 2000 to 2010...
I’m with you, not one of those guys that wants to test and agitate people. I’m a quiet person, don’t want to draw attention to myself. Just purchased an SR22 by the way.
I actually had the reverse problem. I got an SR22, and didn’t like the idea of a plastic guide rod, so I got a stainless captured spring rod from tandemkross. The gun would not fully cycle with cheap bulk ammo. It would eject, but the slide wouldn’t travel far enough to pick up another round. I put the original plastic one back in, and it is flawless with everything I put in it. The tandemkross rod has a double spring, and it seems to be stronger than the original.
Sounds like the Double Spring may be to strong or stiff. The Brass Stacker only has one. If you'd like a metal rod it might be worth trying. Thanks for watching and appreciated the comment.
I enjoyed your video and your honest opinions. I bought an SR 22 years ago for my daughter when she started shooting. To be honest though, I have probably shot more rounds thru it than she has. It is a very fun gun to shoot and fortunately, we have never had a single issue with it.
First time on your channel and you did a great video. I really appreciate your info on the SR22 upgrade. I have one for about three years and really like it. Light, safe, fun to shoot. I will definitely be doing your recommended upgrade. Thanks for letting us know! Good luck fishing.
After watching all the videos on the low quality SR22 factory recoil spring, I purchased a captured recoil spring from Tandemkross for $19.95 plus delivery charge. I also noticed that the tops of the magazines were a little too tight and causing some failure to feed issues. I used a flat one inch pry bar to open the magazine tops a hair and not only do the cartridges load more easily, the gun performs flawlessly with any ammo.
I agree completely how about not advertising I have a 40 caliber full size that gun is so heavy and I got a concealed holster and it absolutely sucks. I think that's a great solution and I was really looking at upgrade for something I was purchasing for my wife and I feel good about that for her the Ruger SR22 sounds like a good fit. I'll make sure she gets an upgrade like you did with with your wife's thank you sir.
Thanks, that helps a lot. I have the same problem. It's my wife's gun. She stopped shooting it because of that problem. I love shooting it to. I'll try your fix.
One more thing I like about my SR22 is the double action trigger. I keep mine with 1 in the chamber and 10 in the clip and if I ever need to use it quick all I have to do is flip the safety up with my thumb & pull the trigger and it’ll fire. I don’t have to rack it in order to fire it.
that's how I keep it and it's honestly how any DA/SA should be carried for the safest performance. I'm not gonna lie though I am somewhat less accurate on shot #1
Hmm. I’m going to try this. Took my SR22 to the range yesterday and fired Atleast 200 rounds with many malfunctions. Atleast 1 malfunction/magazine. I want to chalk it up to rimfire ammo but I was using 5 different types and had issues from all of them.
I have been looking at the sr22 myself to ad to my collection. I love 22s. I am also going to look at the keltec p16. I must say that the sr22 feels super in the hand.
My wife really loves this pistol. Very accurate. Does need that one upgrade and run several rounds through it to insure a good break in. Thanks for watching. Don't forget to Hit subscribe...
I always swap the plastic parts for stainless steel in all of my polymer pistols. Doesn't usually cost too much or add a lot to the weight of the pistol.
I've never had those issues with my sr22. Smooth as butter. But I did have a hang fire once, My dumbass tilted the gun back to look at it, Shot the roof at the range? My son was the only one who saw it, so we're good.
Great gun we really enjoy shooting it I have done a lot of up dating new spring and rod , extended mag take down leaver I didn’t need to do these things because the gun ran great but I’m testing the up grades.the new spring and rod are a must for sure but I’m sure the old spring and rod would last a life time tho
Ruger firearms seem to require breaking in. Sent my SR22 back for a couple of issues and after a year of shooting it the problems stopped. Haven't bought another Ruger since.
I guess I got lucky mine runs like a fine tuned machine I really love shooting it I got Glocks, Sig's, revolvers nothing is as fun as this little guy, people have to dry clean these pistols with birchwood casy and then lubricate them with a bit of break free clp because it won't allow that dirty 22 ammo to gum up it stays fluid and don't fling off as well like rem oil but I still use rem oil just to spray a mist over it for polishing, none of my guns fail or malfunction
Hey, thanks for the info...I was having some lite fires and did notice the less desirable plastic guide rod that didn't seem to seat properly...I ordered the same guide rod from Brass Stacker...hopefully it works better...Thanks!
I looked on Brass Stacker so I could purchase the guide rod and spring for my Rurger SR22 but could not find the items to add to my cart. CAN YOU HELP ME?
My experience is that my plastic guide rod got scratched up when assembling after cleaning, I found the reason was because the guide rod SPRING only goes in ONE way, the other way its being forced.
I plan on replacing the plastic guide rid also. There is the Tandemkross one piece rod with spring attached and there is a plain stainless steel rod that uses the factory spring. Which one should I get ?
The Brass Stacker is very high quality. However, the Tandemkross is still a good upgrade and a little cheaper. But, I like the encapsulated spring the best. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
Thanks for making a great video on the Ruger SR22. I've experienced the same malfunctions you described with my SR22 pistol. I now plan to replace the original guide rod with a stainless steel guide rod. Love shooting this pistol which has so many great features for a .22 LR pistol. Can you provide the manufacturers name for the concealed belt pouch you featured in the SR22 video. Thanks!
i got a galloway captured steel spring and guide rod. it unscrewed at the front end without my knowledge jamming the piece, really poor design. i went back to the oem plastic guide rod and couldn’t be happier.
Good video, man. I really like shooting my sr22. Especially with the price of ammo right now! I wonder if somewhere along the line somebody put your return spring in backwards? It's smaller on one end. If the small end is forward it will drag on your guide rod and cause the problems you were having.
@@kjsytnmbcz003 That same conceal case in the video will work just fine. Not sure which was the actual fix, seeing I did both at the same time. However; the Stainless Steel captured spring Rod is a great upgrade you will really enjoy. Makes reassembly easier. Thanks for the comments.
I almost bought one a few yrs back but I liked the Walther better I like how the safety works it’s kinda hidden. Iam glad I did now. It’s never given me one problem. Sorry for the misfortune it sux to worry about a pistol not functioning right specially if your life depends on it.☹️

Alot of people have sent them back for warranty. However, you're just going to get the factory plastic part put back in. It's sad you pay so much for a pistol and have to upgrade it. Guess it is what ot is...
I question using a steel guide rod with an alilumium slide? Maybe it's not a issue? Me I'd rather replace a plastic guide rod verse the whole slide. My sr22 works just fine with the plastic guide rod. Maybe the engineer's got it right I know I'm no engineer. I will also add I have never seen a broken plastic guide rod in any firearm.
