It sounds like late 60s early 70s Santana because Carlos Santana was influenced by Cuban music. Marc Ribot is interpreting the music of Cuban guitarrist/tresero/bandleader Arsenio Rodriguez. So Ribot and Santana kind of overlap. I like your description ("with the gloss stripped off"). I could never get into Santana that much because of the gloss. I can totally get into this band though.
