Any doubts I had about getting into progression fantasy/litRPG books have been washed away thanks to this video. I could see and hear the passion you have for those books and it's inspired me to try them for myself. Thank you!
i have binged "The Wandering Inn" nonstop in the last two months from start up to date. volume 1 was really good after the rework so i gave it a chance and i have no regrets, volumes 2-9 for me were a roller-coaster and a mix bag of emotions, loving some arcs, hating others, questioning some decisions the author made, but before i realized i could not get away from the worldbuilding and character development in such a level i had never seen before in any other author, the last volume 10 currently unfinished its being the best fantasy writing i have ever read.
I plan on returing to the work of Wandering Inn next year with volume 5 I think. I am really excited to see what it has in store for me. Glad you loved it
I’ve just started book one of The Wandering Inn. So far I’m really enjoying it and looking forward to dipping my toes into some more progression fantasy in the future. Hope you have a great week!
Interesting video! So far I've never read any Progression Fantasy, but I got Cradle and Mother of Learning planned for later this year. If I like them, I'll definitely be looking into some of your other recommendations!
OK, So i randomly searched UA-cam for 'Progression Fantasy' just to see if there are some UA-camrs or Channels i am unaware of that post some videos about reviews/recommendations and general thoughts on stuff in the genre that i am so into and see how that kinda blends into the general 'Normal books' of Fantasy/sci-fi and what they would recommend in that aspect too. Low and behold i got recommended this video on almost the very top of my search. 5 Minutes into the video i already clicked the on this video's channel name in a new tab, expecting to check out what other videos the guy might have that i might find interesting. 10minute in? already Subscribed and VERY looking forward to seeing MUCH more content from Andrew. I think you are a great 'Hype man' for the genre and basically giving the 'synopsis' and kinda general thoughts/expectations without spoilers (VERY important to me) which i awesome. I absolutely love it when i can tell a guy is legitimately excited or into a series and can put it in a few words that don't spoil the recipient and instead hype him up to check it out. Well done man. AWESOME video and now i can watch the last 5 minutes of it after typing this long LONG message i felt simply compelled to. P.s. - You mentioning Petrik Leo just sealed the deal. I heard about the guy and saw his stuff on goodreads forever.. but never checked his youtube page until a few days ago when i subscribed and started retro-watching all his stuff from like 2 years ago (the first SFF Spotlight he did in his series of videos) and been having a blast. and i feel like your channel will be similar.
@@AndrewsWizardlyReads Honestly i was kinda surprised there was no 'He who fights with monsters' in there. Yeah, it's considered as one of the absolute 'best' (debatable, but i'd agree as it is my #1 for sure, that i patreon'd for like 5 years?) but regardless it is always mentioned among the top 3 in the genre or so. Yeah, i know your list was mostly a kinda 'vanilla person to the genre' and didn't really have 'Pure litrpg' per se other than Dungeon crawler carl (which is also in that top 3.. often even #1) But backtracking a little, I would be surprised if you haven't heard of He who fights with monsters, The Primal Hunter or Defiance of the Fall. they are some of the most popular but i would recommend He who fights with monsters first and foremost to anyone looking for a 'litrpg' per se, and it will honestly either click with you right away and be one of your favorites, or if you are in the 100% more inferior opinion of not liking the MC's awesome Snarky, unapologetic and great personality, you will absolutely hate. It's sorta a either or, no in between. Also, as a side-note, regarding the other 2 titles i mentioned, 'The Primal Hunter' is what i'd consider the MC being a 'Jason'-lite (Jason is the MC of He who fights with monsters) so chances are, if you like He who fights with monsters you will also like Primal Hunter. and Defiance of the Fall is kinda a 'Cultivation' mixed with System Apocalypse (so like the other Tao wong famous series one, which btw... i will forever be pissed he tried to copyright that term.) and combine into a litrpg. I would be interested to actually hear your thoughts on them for sure! and can also definitely recommend you check out 'Lord of the mysteries' if you haven't yet, as it's by far the 1 Translated story (it's originally Chinese, but it's not a 'Wuxia/Xinxia' nor cultivation really) that i would recommend to anyone that loves Progression fantasy with an AMAZING system (which i still think is favorite if not top 3 of all time) and if you like Mysteries (well doh, the title) combined with a Victorian Era society with Supernatural Eldritch horrors (yeah it can be pretty spooky and AWESOME) that all starts from a 'isekai' per se that also is much more complex (you will get it as u read further) and is considered by many as the best in the genre... you can't go wrong there.
The Wandering Inn, Dungeon Crawler Carl and Super Powereds are definitely in my all time favorites in this genre together with The Perfect Run and The Ripple System. A new find that I've only read the first book of is Apocalypse Parenting with a similar start like DCC but where the MC has 3 young children and needs to work together with the community around her to survive and progress.
Of your list I've read nine and liked seven. (Mother of Learning is on my list.) I just finished the first book of a new series for me this morning and I loved it: "Monsters & Legends", Infinite Realm #1, by Ivan Kal. The LitRPG bits are done well, but the real shining feature of the book was the character work. Ryun (particularly) was very complex, very believable (within the context of the book's world), and fascinating to read about. Highly recommended. I'm pretty sure I've given you my highlighted series before, so I'll stop with the new one.
I can't wait to hit this genre in my TBR (I'm already on top of Andrew Rowe's stuff). I added a bunch all at the same time due to BellTube and then a smattering from you spread out a bit more.
Super Powereds sounds fun, added to my long ling list lol. Would love to hear more like lesser known top 5 or something as most of these are pretty popular it seems?
I would recommend the He Who Fights With Monsters series. The protagonist isn't for everyone, but it is definitely my favorite progression fantasy so far...
Great list have only tried Cradle and Iron Prince but want to try them all. My current progression series was recommended to me by a manger at work. CHRYSALIS by Rinoz. A human reincarnated as an ant. Yeah I know...but was a recommendation and the audio is by Jeff Hayes who I wanted a try. Surprise surprise had a blast with the first two volumes🎉
This is perfect because I picked up Wandering Inn this week because of your reviews! It starts a bit rough but I’m at the point where I would die for any of these characters… book one! It’s been so long since I’ve had that feeling!🫣
Are progression fantasy and litrpg synonyms or is there just heavy overlap? I haven’t read either sub-genre (I think) and I’m curious to understand more.
Litrpg uses game elements like there will be +1 to strength....+3 to dexterity and so on. In progression fantasy or scifi there are no game elements and characters grow in power through other magical means.
I'd characterize LitRPG as a subgenre of progression fantasy/SF/superhero. Progression X implies a pretty explicit increase in the power of the characters. LitRPG quantifies that increase with numbers (and generally some sort of "game" interface). So all LitRPG is progression X, but not all progression X is LitRPG.
I'll not recommended Iron Prince. MC's sister figure leaves MC and starts dating MC's bully who tries to kill mc. Just out of the blue . No reasons given. I think author just wanted to piss off readers .
Can’t wait for the Cradle animated series
I am so pumped! I hop it leads to a full fledged series :)
