  • Ian McKellan and Judi Dench are two of the most revered actors in showbiz -- and when you put them alongside the talents of Idris Elba, James Corden, and the pop superstars Taylor Swift and Jennifer Hudson, you’ve got yourself a hit, right?
That was the general idea when all of them were all cast in the 2019 musical fantasy film Cats, based on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award-winning musical. The movie was also directed by Academy Award-winning director Tom Hooper.
So, why was the movie a critical and commercial failure? It’s never just one thing that makes a movie a flop, but we now know what really went wrong with Cats.

If the cats were designed and animated to look more like cats than humans or to look like the characters of Cats Don’t Dance, and if an actual story line beyond the play was developed, this movie could’ve worked.
They botched it by pasting fur and ears onto human bodies.

CGI works as a compliment to props/practical effects, but even the most arduously labored CGI is never indistinguishably realistic. A movie that completely relies on rushed CGI expecting the work to be waved away as if by magic wand, ends up unconvincing at best… downright revolting at worst.

I think one of the other problems with this movie(aside from everything), it didn’t evoke the Broadway musical, it didn’t have the style, there’s a certain likable quality about the original Broadway that was unmistakable, and it was humans portraying cat-like behavior, not literal cats like the movie chose to do.
There was an energy to the Broadway musical, and thats likely due to the dynamic Broadway stars they had involved, it gave characters that personality, it was just a right mix of everything that made it special and so beloved, and why it’s one of the top Broadway shows off all time.

From the complicated names you’re forced to remember, the character introductions literally during the whole thing, and zero plot, it just looked like a bunch of people dressed as cats dancing around and saying Jellicle, whatever that means, over and over and over again. I’m a big theatre and musical theatre nerd so both the musical and the movie adaptation disappointed me.

Maybe because it's a re imagination of something that used to be beautiful and artistic. My biggest problem with the movie is the characters, some of the most important ones got less exposure and Victoria isn't even the lead character but this story seemed to revolve around her. There's the CGI, their overall look, and the use of famous people to try to get people interested in it. Just my opinion though, there seems to be people who enjoyed it.

Jennifer Hudson sang Memories so beautifully it brought tears to my eyes, she is beautiful singer and actually Taylor Swift did a really good singing Macavity, and all the dancers from the Royal London Ballet did beautifully, especially Francesca Hayward , for it being her first movie and all of the other singers actors and comedians in the movie did avery good job, Judi Dench, Idris Elba, Jason Derulo, James Corden, even Rebel, they should be given props for what they were given and what they did, even if it might not have been the best Broadway show to be made into a movie, to me a musical is just a Broadway play made more accessible for those of us who can't go to them to watch, and my favorite cat is Mr. Mistoffelees, I just love him and his song, and when I saw the Les Twins from World of Dance, I knew even though they were cats, I knew it was them just by their dancing, it was awesome to witness! 😊🎶

Actually, audiences left the theatre wondering why quite so many people hated this movie so much. For me, it was quite a whimsical, fun movie! I’m not saying the animation wasn’t initially off putting, but the fantastic music and exceptional dancing kept this movie from dragging on or feeling too out of place. Come on people; you need to be able to go into this movie knowing you’re going to have to suspend your disbelief a bit. Once you start rolling with the idea that, yup, these are cat people, it’s a really fun time to sit back and enjoy these goofy/fun/sincere performances!

The cgi was what bothered me the least about this movie the movie was bad not because of the cgi it was bad because it was lacking tons of energy some actors looked like they are almost falling asleep during their own song (like the girl that plays victpria), the songs were changed from the original to get a more pop like sound wich is completly unneeded in a musical and most of the "dancing" is just them crawling around on the floor what would made this movie better is not better cgi its if they would use actually broadway preformers who can really sing and dance and knows what they are doing instead of just using big names , the stage show of cats is truly amazing it has amazing dances and songs people need to understand that just because the movie is bad dosent mean the musical is bad.

The reason why Cats can never work as a movie is simple. Cats is all spectacle and lacks a coherent storyline. I’m not saying that all musicals don’t have storylines, but a musical mainly is entertaining through the spectacle of the sets, music, performances, etc. Movies are not just spectacle (despite what Michael Bay thinks) and need a plot to work. Cats doesn’t even have a bad or experimental storyline, it’s just a bunch of characters individually introducing themselves through song. There is nothing for a movie going audience to get invested in. Cats is incapable of having a quality theatrical adaptation due to how the play is structured on a fundamental level.

I think if this movie came out 15 years ago, and didn’t use all the CGI, and had entirely new producers who didn’t force all the rushed decisions, it could’ve been enjoyable.
Like, there are scenes that work. Like the original model for Sonic the Hedgehog. One of the trailers worked pretty well, despite the. Weird looking model. But what was with Cats’ director and producers? Was this like their first movie ever?

I’ll say it in less than a 4 min video. They rushed the CGI because this was the first time something like this was made so they needed more time ( I would say 2 years because that’s how long animation takes). Just because you get all these actors doesn’t means it is good. Lastly Cat plot is confusing as hell and doesn’t make any sense

The main problem is that the source material is for young children, but the movie was targeting adult audiences without adding more plot and character development for adults. The stage production can get away with sticking with the infantile story line because of the in-person singing and dancing distracting away from the lack of story. The movie isn't able to mirror the level of distraction that the stage production has, so its failures in trying to be for adults become ever more obvious.

A CAT SUICIDE CULT PLOT IS FOR YOUNG CHILDREN?????

  • @GrilloTheFlightless
    @GrilloTheFlightless 4 роки тому

It’s quite simple where they went wrong. They put it before cameras and started filming. I’ve not seen the film, but have seen the stage show. The reality is, Lloyd Webber used a series of poems by TS Elliot for his inspiration that were not Elliot as his best. There wasn’t anything in the poems that could be described as a plot. The musical therefore had nothing that could be described as a proper storyline - just a basic premise and a load of character portraits. The whole “Old Deuteronomy gets kidnapped and a few songs later is suddenly rescued without much of a struggle” thing felt like an afterthought. Where the show succeeded (certainly in its earlier production) was in the intimacy of the stage setting. There were ‘cat’ dancers going out into the audience and curling up on audience members laps. In the original West End run, kids came from the audience and gathered around Old Deuteronomy on one of his songs, which was encouraged in subsequent performances I that first run. The show relied on its music, clever staging, interaction with the audience and the atmosphere of being a live show. Take it out of a theatrical environment, and I’m sure that costs it some of its appeal and highlights the fact that there is no proper story to get behind. It’s the last musical I would choose for a movie adaptation.

I may be the only one saying this...but...I liked it. I liked it enough to go out and buy the thing and say that I liked it (expecting to be publically humiliated for doing so). I just don't get all the hate. The songs were catchy, got stuck in my head, the acting was great, the choreography was great, I don't know what people were expecting from a movie about a West End/Broadway musical about alley cats living on the streets of London, which was based on a book of poetry! I think art is art, and people need to try and suspend their beliefs, and just go into something non-judgementally and view it with an unbiased and innocent eye. I know that is asking a lot of most of society, but I find that doing so makes things much more enjoyable to view.

I don't know... As afraid I am to see the movie, I feel like it would be something kind of beautiful on its own. It's unique, I guess. People don't tend to understand unique until much later.
That being said, it's unacceptable how little time the production for the film was given. If they had enough time, producers probably could have given a bit more purpose to the movie. Sorry, Universal. You didn't catch the audience this time, but you'll come back around with something stunning - I'm sure. :)

I never listen to critics because, as their name implies, all they do is criticize.....which sets the public up to find fault with the movie.
