- Coming from a poor and destitute family, Urvashi is encouraged by her mother, Shanta to be on more than friendly terms with a much older male, Keshav Dalvi. Keshav takes a liking to young Urvashi, and encourages her to explore her talents in films, which she does, and does gain popularity, starting as a singer, than accomplishing herself as an actress/singer. She decides to marry Keshav, only to be discouraged by her own mother, but she is strong-willed, and does marry him. Would she be happy in her married life?

When I left India decades ago, Shabana was on top of her game. Smitha Patil was quite new but had created quite a sensation with a couple of her off beat films. Good to see this one after ages. Very well directed, realistic, good stars, wonderful acting & an overall upper grade production. Her daughter I recognize from another film I had seen when I was in Bombay, in which she was an up coming star. I really liked it, and Smitha Patil was wonderful as always!! Namaste🙏 from USA!!

I disagree on this pov. Usha was always searching for a perfect partner and she got them with some flaws according to her but even she was not the perfect match to them as well. Its not about men or woman, its just about every relationship comes with some good and some flaws, its upto both if they can manage or not......

I liked many things about the movie.
It was subtle, progressive, well-crafted , well-performed. It portrayed string of emotions, harsh truth & plight wrapped with the women's/star's life through a novel method of storytelling.
The title tells it all.
PS: One thing, I personally liked, was the AIR's description of chronology throughout the movie.☺

Though ended up as comedy it is the true life of an actress that was a tragedy. As an actress she needed to make all compromises in man's world, but regained her poise after finding her daughter, married in her absence. Bhoomika is Smita Patil's defining picture.

this isnt even complete. the run time is approx 2.3 hours. about 40 minutes is missing
She must choose Rajan, who never take advantage of her and always remain a good friend. He proposed her to marry and ask her to take divorce from keshav and she rejected him and seleced people like keshav , sunil and vinayak.

*REVIEW:* - The film depicts the lives of film stars and technicians of the cinema industry in circa 1940s. The plot is focused on the life of a high-flying young lead actress Usha, who goes by the film name Urvashi, (Smita Patil), with flashbacks of her past in black and white. When Usha was just a school girl, an adult family associate Keshav Dalvi (Amol Palekar), had introduced Usha to filmdom, through her singing talent. When Usha was still young, Keshav’s actions and judgment of conscience towards Usha and even her mother were not inconformity with good. So, it wasn’t surprising that Usha now grown up and although strong willed, she ends up getting impregnated by him. Being pregnant, she has no choice but to marry Keshav, even though he is not her true love. After marriage Usha makes a decision to terminate her acting career, but the selfish money-minded Keshav needs her income to advance his personal business, convinces her not to. But Usha is unwilling to play the lead role with Rajan (Anant Nag) who she suspects is in love with her. Keshav has self-appointed himself as Usha’s film business manager, and he uses his influence to get rid of Rajan in the new planned production. But as time goes by, Rajan has become a bigger star, and Keshav’s business isn’t doing well, he needs more money to support his business, and so he arranges with the producers for Usha to act opposite Rajan with the condition of a higher contract payment.
Things don’t go well for both husband and wife who quarrel endlessly. Keshav is only interested in his own selfish concerns. With feelings of jealousy and insecurity, he attempts to control her behavior by using physical violence and emotional abuse. Disgusted, Usha leaves him and seeks refuge with Rajan who suggests divorce and offers matrimony, but fearing to lose him, she rejects the offer. Keshav convinces Usha to come back and sign a film with Sunil Verma (Nasiruddin Shah), a director who is desperate to boost his falling career. Usha is pregnant again but this time she suffers the biggest humiliation and indignity when Keshav refuses to accept the unborn child as his own. Suspecting that it’s Rajan’s child, he forces Usha to have an abortion. Her pride deeply hurt, she makes a thoughtless decision with the opportunist Sunil, who lures her to contemplate a joint suicide together with him after sexual gratification, to which she agrees, but the plan gets accomplished only half way. She then yet again makes another blunder, agreeing to be a mistress of a wealthy married stranger Vinayak Kale (Amrish Puri) and gets entrapped literally in his orthodox traditional ways of living. She is finally saved and freed by Keshav with the help of the police. She returns to her hometown to find Rajan available, unmarried and still waiting for her.
But she no longer can make a right decision anymore. Her strong and impetuous senses are in a dense forest of delusion. After becoming famous, she was more concerned about her image and the star status role (Bhumika) in her film life. She abused the freedoms that an orthodox society has to offer to a woman. She developed an attachment for false ego, false strength, false pride and lust. She seems to be in a trance and detached. Her intelligence is completely lost and she has fallen into the material pool, choosing to sink into a life of utter moral depravity and degradation. (Such are the lives of many film stars).
There’s no denying Smita Patil’s enormous talent. She and Amol Palekar have given flawless performances. The supporting cast has also performed well. The story is based on the biography of a real well-known Marathi actress of the 1940s Hansa Wadkar. The script is well written but the subject itself is tedious and listless. Constant spousal bickering can be a turnoff and doesn’t arouse feelings of interest, enthusiasm or causing excitement. Moreover, the film is quite lengthy and the tempo is slow. The soundtrack is average. However, art direction and costume designing is above average. The director Shyam Benegal has done an excellent job in directing this semi art film. I guess the viewers will end up with mixed feelings after watching this movie.
Ali, I doubt whether it's a review or a plot. BTW, talking about the pace, I don't feel, the movie failed on this aspect as slow pace was much needed for discerning the anguish and vacillation of the protagonist.
I agree with you on your view on Benegal of being pioneer of semi-art cinema. However, I feel, this movie was more inclined towards art and maybe this thing dragged down your rating from 8 to 6.
To my shock, the thing, that this movie had lesser space for Palekar, disappointed me a bit(As I am a Palekar fan). But I didn't include that while judging the movie because it was my personal bias. Moreover that gap was bridged by other good actors.
Nevertheless, I congratulate you on your understanding, analysing & expressing the nuances of the film. It will help people for sure.

Its shyam benegal typical movie style.. off late 1978 unfortunately Amar Akbar Anthony was also nominated for best film category which is 200% complete paisa vasool movie but Bhumika was the filmfare jury best choice...may be due to shyam benegal direction...smita patil was superb in her role but script story was ok ok..
