That radio passes all 10 kHz of audio from the stations that modulate it. It is very wide band for a small radio. AM radio is dying and has been since the mid-70s when listenership of FM overtook AM. It's saving grace was Rush in the 80s and FM translators in the modern era. It survives by also super serving other audiences in markets where FM is usually all mainstream music formats and serves the majority of the listeners Those are religious (something shared on both bands) and programming in languages other than English. Even oldies on AM is a tough sale since agencies don't buy oldies. Our local oldies station on AM is nothing but bottom-of-the-barrel per inquiry ads and it comes from the provider they use. Very little local business advertises on that station. Money making AM stations of the 60s and 70s really didn't see the writing on the wall until surveys came out noting AMs decreasing listenership. When they finally did, they were stuck buying what few FM stations were left and selling the AM at fire sale prices. Some of the FMs they bought were small class A FMs (when class A FMs were max'd out at 3kW). AM will be around as long as their operators can keep paying the bills. The FCC has maintained a free-market approach to solving the problem of AM radio: let the operators turn the license in and turn the transmitter off when they can't afford to do it anymore. They have in droves. It remains to be seen if digital operations will do anything. One of the problems with AM is that coverage hasn't kept up with population growth. Digital won't fix that. No matter what anyone thinks about Rush, he was a genius when it came to building an audience and keeping them engaged and for as long as he did and he did it mostly on the AM band.
When I was expressing my displeasure about WMOX flipping to full talk in the mid '90's, one of the guys who used to work there told me that their ratings were in the toilet and it was either flip to a format that would improve ratings or go off the air. He said that once they went full talk, their ratings went way up; but, now, most of the political talkers are on FM and about all that's on WMOX is Mike Gallagher, Fox sports (that can also be heard on another station), and Dave Ramsey. Frankly, I don't see how they even pay the bills. Prior to talk radio, WMOX ran a country format and I think what killed their ratings is when the other AM country station went to FM in late-'81 (where they still are today). WMOX still hung on to the full music format until Rush came along in '89 and from '89 to '94, the music became less and less until they flipped to all talk. WMOX has been here since 1946 and they are locally owned. Even though I don't like their format, I wish them all the best and I hope they can hang on.
Where I live even Dave Ramsey is on FM. There is a really good oldies station on AM, but it’s a simulcast of an FM station and they rarely ever mention their AM frequency.
LA Oldies was just like the fictional WKRP... Mother Carlson needed it as a tax writeoff so it couldn't start to actually become popular or turn a profit...
Too much anger these days better to thank them for the call and wish a nice day then you can politely hang up. Life is tough you might be talking to a recently unemployed oil worker or his girl.... just sayin. God bless everyone!! Personally still trying to understand how capacitors work never mind the world at large lol.
People forget that those unwanted calls are coming from human beings trying to make a living with far fewer advantages than those they typically call. Is it annoying? Sure. Is it prudent to abuse strangers? No. Reaping and sowing.
@@Seiskid Yup, I'm not getting the calls asking if I want to buy a subscription to readers digest, or replacement windows from a reputable company. 99% of the calls are to let me know the warranty is expiring on my 18 year old car, or special agent Mike Smith from Microsoft's IRS division to let me know my social security license is suspended. Cold calling people for legitimate sales is dead. How many people do you actually think they reach, that agrees to listen to the pitch, and actually results in a sale? If you live in an area where that's the only work available, I guess you take what you can get, but most of the times there's far better options for gainful employment.
Ronald Reagan signed into law legislation that eliminated the equal time provision (Fairness Doctrine) that mandated stations had to give equal time to another party that might have opposed what the station aired. So lets say the announcer or talk show host spent an hour taking about why they hated widgets. Well, that station would have had to give an hour of time to a party that was PRO widgets. As you could see, this was a logistical nightmare for radio stations and as a result radio stations rarely aired anything controversial. When Reagan signed the law eliminating the equal time provision, the marketplace was finally free to air whatever talk show topic they wanted. It was because of this legislation that Rush Limbaugh and others were allowed to flourish and succeed. So, why weren't there any liberal talk show hosts or networks? Oh there was, in fact there where were several. But they all failed because of low ratings.
In Phoenix there’s an AM station that bills itself as “progressive talk” that is all liberal leaning talk radio. I don’t know anyone that listens to it, though. I listened a bit once scanning the dial on my old AM radio for the oldies station and it was laughably bad. The top talk station here is KTAR on FM which leans fairly conservative, and second most popular is KFYI on AM which carried Rush and is even more conservative. There’s an AM talk station here that’s 100% financial news and two that are all sports, and they all have more listeners than the progressive talk station.
@@goyadressunofficial I started listening to Rush back in his 'Spatula City' days, he was a hoot to say the least, he was political but that became more prominent in his show over the years.
I may disagree with a lot of your politics, but I like the challenge. If people don't start listening to each other and understanding where they're coming from, we're never going to get out of the crapfest we're in. I do listen to Rush, though. Moving Pictures is a great album.
@@equid0x It’s sad that people can be so intolerant of anything other than their exact brand of “tolerance”, and are unable to see the irony of it. I think we need some “radical moderates” to break from the entrenched party lines, start listening instead of just talking, and make the difficult compromises that move things forward. I’m probably dreaming, though.
Very interesting. Allan Weiner from WBCQ shortwave fame recently purchased WHRI. Also, you're right...Rush wasn't far right enough. I'm still amazed anyone actually thought he would ever be far right.
I have one of those Philco radios, in white color, works excellent. We have one oldies AM station here in a small town BC. I can pickup KNX almost every night.
In Phoenix there’s still one really good oldies station on AM, but it’s a simulcast of an FM station. They hardly ever mention their AM frequency and mostly hype listening on their app. I really don’t know what else is left on AM here, as that oldies station is all I ever listen to on my old Philco AM radio. There’s a video of it on my channel.
I built an AM transmitter that was supose to be a morse code trasmitter but it was more of an AM radio jammer. I always planed to take in on the School bus to Troll the driver, but I forgot. I think it use to mess with FM as well.
Rush always said the longer you listened, the more you agreed with him. Most people I knew who didn’t like him didn’t listen very much. He was a Boomer, but one of the good ones. My father was the same way.
People can say what they want about Rush and I can understand why a lot of people didn't like him, but he in my opinion single handedly saved AM radio. He launched a ton of copycats, and like Shango mentioned that kept the lights on... then when other people went satellite he refused and made a big deal out of it. Just by him doing what he did with his show it gave others like him (Hannity, etc.) the foothold and the path forward in that market which is now buoying up AM.
Dear Shango66, This is why I watch your channel almost every day, believe me, you have become my ray of leanring in fixing these master peices, I am going to continue learning how to repair them, so they will never be LOST, Thank you kindly for the channel, I will continue to love AM enjoyment, I live about 6 mile near Wheeling, W. Va, we listen to WWVA 1170 all talk radio, the AM transmitting towers are located there, I am going to try to go an to visit this radio station and look at the eletronics, I am so interested. Have a GREAT Day.
With the passing of Rush Limbaugh, commercial AM radio stations will possibly resume the decline they were in (back in the late-80's) as viable business models. (In all the years of watching his UA-cam videos, this is the first time I've personally heard Shango mention his politics. The shangomeister always struck me as being somewhat apolitical.)
He has always had a right leaning stance. You can pick it up in almost all of his videos. Look up his EOL videos of Hillary and other things like Chanel sweeps he stops on news channels so you can listen to the ridiculous propaganda they are spewing.... I have always liked shango videos for his political stance and humor.
Part 97 is regarding ham radio, I think you mean part 47 and part 15 for your transmitter. I have a 30 watt AM transmitter that is FCC part 47 / 15 certified that operates on 530 KHz via a crystal and it has a manual tuner for the antenna that allows you to put random wire or couple it to the SC main lines in your home to use as an antenna.
@@shango066 I think he is talking about carrier current radio. That is where the transmitter is hooked up and transmits through the power lines. Schools and colleges mainly did and still do this type of broadcasting, the range is usually limited to on campus.
In the 1960s I had a Remco Caravelle TOY Transmitter radio station, claimed to be the same toy AM radio transmitter owned by Rush, maybe it's just me but I think toys were more interesting back then, too many regulations these days for a lot of the cool things we had like the Mattel sonic blaster
@@LakeNipissing I really liked the Radio Shack electronics learning kits, where you could make over a hundred project circuits. I had kits from them in the late ‘70s and made an AM crystal radio and also a very low power AM radio transmitter.

I will miss him and his truth deeply RIP Rush.
Rush Limbaugh, Dom Imus & Howard Stern ruled AM in the days. Correction Shortwave is very active but not all the time & a good antenna you can get quite a bit still but mostly religious junk like Brother Stair which is annoying. WTWW 5085 kHz plays good music. WRMI & WBCQ also plays music at times.
Except that the phone system clamps the really high schriels and loud noise. I tried using the horn-in-a-can but the other end doesn't get the full fun of it.
@@shango066 oh, the program's dead. They'll keep something on the satellite feed but no one is going to fill his shoes. It may turn into something like the Art Bell re-runs (if they're still doing that) after midnight.

I have a couple of auto tuners for my HF radios. They’re nice to have (albeit noisy with their grinding noises) but every new ham should start out with a manual tuner so he can understand how they work.
And one of those eight "transistors" might be the detector diode. Sort of like the 200 Watt stero amplifiers that drew only 50 Watts from the wall socket.
I used to love tinkering with old radios and TV's as a kid. Once I even repaired (sort of) an early '60s B&W TV set by pulling the tubes and taking them to K-Mart and checking them on one of those tube-checker machines they used to have, and replacing the faulty ones. I was so proud of myself. Tell me, is hobbyist basic testing equipment for those electronics expensive? Is it difficult to learn how to use?
I'm no expert on these yet, but from what I can tell, you can get very far fixing up old radios with just a basic digital multimeter. Even just a cheap one from Harbor Freight or the hardware store, they're pretty much all very accurate these days. I was able to track down several bad connections on an early printed circuit board Admiral tube radio from 1954, and figure out that it had horrible tube sockets. Now if you want the more advanced tools like a signal generator and oscilloscope for doing alignments (especially on complex stereo FM tuners), that's when it does start getting expensive. Televisions are a different beast that I'm just now starting to get familiar with after watching Shango over the years, I'll stick with radios for now.
I don't even know who that guy to do with AM radio was. I'm from the UK, AM is pretty much dead here. A few stations & mostly ham left. I can pick plenty of stuff up from surounding countrys though.

It will be a different world without hearing Rush's take on world events. More bland.. His wit and nature of being a 'harmless lovable fuzzball". And he was a true gentleman to boot! God Speed Rush, you will be sorely missed. May you continue being the "Truth Detector" in the heavens.
Leftist donors hired Ed Schultz and others for their own network, Air America. They lost millions! I picked it up one night going through the dial. It was boring, and vicious. No wonder nobody listened. No sense of humor.

I prefer Gary and Shannon on KFI radio they don't have a format just talk about everything under the sun. Shannon is smart has a great personality.
All the calls I get are scammers looking to rip of the vulnerable and confused. Hard to feel sorry.
With half his brain tied behind his back to make it fair. RIP El Rushbo!
But they all failed because of low ratings.
and Reagan game amnesty to millions and showed the complete stupidity of the USA to the thi.rd world to flood in
In Phoenix there’s an AM station that bills itself as “progressive talk” that is all liberal leaning talk radio.
Man I miss Rush already, RIP.
I think a lot of us took him for granted. I felt the same sense of loss when Paul Harvey passed.
How can you have a dialogue when Liberals cancel everyone they don't agree with?
I'm a late-X too. 1980. Never listened to Rush but I do agree with him and admire his contribution to content creation.
I was driving through NH yesterday listening to this very Limbaugh Legacy. Thanks for the post Shango.
Go away lefty

Yeah I screwed that up I think it's 15 right?
@@shango066 I think he is talking about carrier current radio. That is where the transmitter is hooked up and transmits through the power lines. Schools and colleges mainly did and still do this type of broadcasting, the range is usually limited to on campus.
@@shango066 15 is most likely the correct one since it's an LPAM exciter.

Never a waste of time to waste the time of telemarketers or telescammers! Good job...!
I think Bruce Williams helped a lot also in extending the life of talk radio. He had a big following.

Very much interested in the AM radios. Like to work on and play tube and early transistors. Yes, running the transmitter will be very interesting.
8 transistors? Wow!! It must be good!! (Sarcasm)
All my junk calls are about my car's extended warranty.
You are still lucky. When you reach a certain age they are selling hearing aids and cremation services.
And one of those eight "transistors" might be the detector diode. Sort of like the 200 Watt stero amplifiers that drew only 50 Watts from the wall socket.
it's time for Draegunne McSchnarfleArgle to unleash the hounds. the brand new Minister of Truth would probably never approve.
Rush Limbaugh and Art Bell kept AM alive in the State's.
RIP Art Bell
Rest in Peace Rush
