Amazing, I had no idea that you had no medium wave broadcast stations in the UK! I actually like those tiny cheap receivers from the past. Oh well, Canada is a lucky nation to have so many I guess. Just in the greater Toronto and surrounding areas we have many radio stations that broadcast on both FM and AM. However at night the whole dial is filled with reception from many hundreds of kilometers away including both Canada and the US. One of the big things I've noticed recently is that AM has started to lean more toward the news and information format. But we still have AM 740 (CFZM) with lots of music for our vintage radio enthusiasts. 🇨🇦
Bear in mind I'm in a rural location 35 miles from the nearest city. Those two nearest cities have radio stations, but on FM. Now, BBC Radio 4 is AM & receivable throught the UK...but is on Long Wave 198Khz which clearly this radio intended for the American marked doesn't have. There are other AM MW radio stations in the UK, but not receivable here at my home. I was really annoyed when Radio Lincolnshire went FM only as it's that I listened to on radios such as this. @@ukfmcbradioservicingTango21 Yes I can certainly agree how annoying it is seeing the governmental stations giving up their medium wave like that. I am located in a rural area on what is known as the Niagara Penninsula where we are not far from the metropolitan area. As a mater of fact 740 CFZM is located in Brampton Ontario and purchased the "Clear Channel" rights to use the frequency of 740 KHz after our CBC made the decision to abandon that frequency as they did with most of the AM frequencies as they have also gone to the FM and internet medium much like the BBC. Although that did happen here we now rely on private operators with the bucks to run our much treasured medium wave entertainment. 740 used to be our main CBC 1 station in this part of Southern Ontario but luckily the private sector was able to take it over and continue to use that previously established by the CBC 50,000 watt clear channel signal beaming south all the way into the USA ( Todderbert's UA-cam channel confirms the reception report when he does his late night band scans ). As for Long Wave, I wish we had the use of it here but as you likely already know, we don't really. When I was a lot younger there was some activity in that area of the spectrum but it was not used for ordinary broadcast. Only navigational beacons and pirate operators. Now from my location I can only receive one beacon located at the Hamilton Airport in Mt Hope Ontario that sends a steady Morse code that continuously repeats the call letters ZHM.
yes, 'rare' in the description for a multi-million selling record etc. We see it time & time again. As if people put the word 'rare' in their search criteria...or the word 'l@@k' in their serach criteria. May work on a market stall but doesn't on Ebay! Richard
It's a snag here, I can only ever get 3 MW station here & all badly. It really pi**ed me off when Radio Lincolnshire discontinued their AM frequency & just broadcast on FM.

When I was a boy (pre 1968) I spent a few of my hard earned dollars on a Midland tape recorder. They took little 4 inch reels and had no capstan so recording music was way out of the question, but I was into tape recorders back then, I think this was my 4th or perhaps 5th. I usually used them for a sort of toy for some time till I got tired of them then tore them apart and made little PA;s out of the boards. Funny though I think the Midland rated perhaps 2nd best of all that I had, my very best was given to me by my mothers boss, it was an all steel case with a multi speed capstan setup that they had received when he bought his latest Lincoln Automobile. It had the cutest little vacuum tubes in it. I do not recall the brand of that one, but I sure wish I had it back now.
On the subject of Duracell, I put up a new HF antenna on Christmas Eve. I got out my antenna analyser, put in two new batteries and got a white screen on startup. Couldn't get it working so I emailed the importer. Boxing day I decided to flash the latest firmware to it to see if that would cure it. Plugged it into the PC and it powered up normally. So I then thought - batteries! I tested them and one of the new cells was 1.3v. It's pretty voltage sensitive anyway, but I hadn't thought new Duracell batteries would ever be faulty. Would have worked in most domestic uses though.
Yes, it is the same Midand. Back in the 50's, Motorola actually made television sets for the USA market. Nowadays & like Midland they have concentrated on 2-way radio. Richard

midland sold cheap junk radios here in the u.s. back in the 60s and 70s. they weren't very good even when there was a m to be picked up.
