Just bought a used 2009 Smart Car...In excellent shape and want to keep it that way...This is an excellent video, great camera work, not complicated and good narrative too...I'm a DIY person, HVAC tradesman, enjoy watching people that know what they're about and can share it...Thanks guys, and of course, the lady too...Be safe.
I am going to use an oil-slurpur... That uses vacuum/low air pressure to suck the oil out. Copper rod in the engine and a plastic tube to the vacuum bottle. Then change the filter and put new oil in 5W30.
I took my wife's 2011 Smart to the dealer and to do nothing more than an oil and filter change they quoted me a price of $160! Ouch! I wanted to use OEM oil filter so I bought one on eBay for $20 which included free shipping and no North Carolina State sales tax of 7.5%. The Mobil Synthetic Oil I got from AutoZone for about $30. A lot of money for an oil & filter change BUT more than a $100 cheaper than they wanted to soak me for at the Smart dealer. Smart recommends oil change every 10,000 miles and I think you're safe with that, using synthetic. Thanks for video!
Excellent. Filling up the new oil filter with oil before installing. That mesh filter seems a good idea especially if it were magnetized. Which I imagine it probably isn't. It seemd to not be dirty at all. Most people don't realize that most of the "metal" bits that occur in an engine are microscopic. Like your guys channel alot, and the work you guys do on BMW's.
My car had smoke coming out, smelled like oil I couldn't remove the bolt since my last mechanic locked it on, and I tried starting it and it sounded like it struggled, so The video helped and my car is just old, appreciated the help though
Hey, thanks a lot for this. I will use the information to get this job going next week. I like the video and your background music was just right. Not too loud. Some videos are almost unwatchable due to loud, awful music. Nice job all the way around.
I have a Smart Fortwo Passion 451 model year 2008, the mechanic i brought it to put penzoil platinum euro 0w30 synthetic oil in it, would that oil be compatible as well?
Advice please. What weight oil do you recommend for spring and summer and what weight for late fall and winter? The sites I check never give me a damn straight answer. Can you help, please? I appreciate it. I have a Smart Passion from 2007.
Once you're able to break the drain plug loose, this is the easiest oil change on any car I have seen, also the transmission oil change is easy too, since the transmission is technically an automated manual, its basically a trans-axle and takes less than 3 quarts of manual transmission/trans-axle fluid and there is no jack required.
I bought the same "European" oil as this guy, and the oil filter was relatively cheap. All together, plus the washer on the oil filter bolt, you are looking at about 40 bucks.
That's the best money can buy and price is fair. It's great for running long drain cycles, just change filter 1/2 way through. Use a fuel system cleaner too every 4th tank
It really is, alot of these dealerships out here really stiff you on labour costs. There's a dude named chrisfix on youtube who basically makes you a mechanic overnight, if you wanna get deeper into this
You put that oil filter on way to tight. You are suppose to put the filter on till it contacts the base filter plate and give it a little bit more of a turn. Heat and expansion does the rest.
Ismael Bezzaouya Smart Centers vary in places. I personally use 0w-40 in case if my mom goes somewhere colder like the mountains or hotter like a desert.
great video but give those FRAM oil filters a big swerve, they are truly junk to the point where they can deteriorate and destroy your engine, theres a reason they are so damn cheap!
Always use gloves. LOL I think people wearing gloves to do work on their cars is silly. It's easy enough to just go wash your hands. Nothing in the car is going to harm you.

great video. I just bought a 2008 smart car and did not anything about it. Thank you for your videos. I am learning alot with you.

thank you. i saved over $120 no more taking it to dealer for oil change. so easy
..thank you again
Yes, and the damn dealers tighten the oil plug way too tight so that you'll never get it open on your own.
Thanks for this, I just changed my own oil successfully.!!!
Great video thank you. I'm tired of paying almost $70 for an oil change When I can do it for for half the price
Brilliant tutorial and so easy compared to other cars, thanks lads 👍
Excellent video! Super easy, clear directions, and great advice!

Great video - concise and simple.
Thanks! Just did an oil change on my precious lil Smart
That was so easy. Thank you. Making out life's easier. Good video!!!
very nicely explained. Thanks much
My car had smoke coming out, smelled like oil
I couldn't remove the bolt since my last mechanic locked it on, and I tried starting it and it sounded like it struggled, so

So you get the really good oil, but cheap out on a SHAM oil filter?
Awesome video
HI! Tks for your very good video,is it a Renault engine?
nice and usfull video thanks.
Advice please. What weight oil do you recommend for spring and summer and what weight for late fall and winter? The sites I check never give me a damn straight answer. Can you help, please? I appreciate it. I have a Smart Passion from 2007.
Can you do a video for the transmission oil change?
I had no idea it was this easy
Haven't seen you do any videos of a smart car lately for repairs can you do some more when you get a chance thanks a lot I have a 2008
I had no idea the convertible top comes up like that with the latches!
the smart car is very tempting these days as i am a door dash driver full time.
There should be a small hook on the right of the engine cover to hold it open.
Where can I see oil light reset video? Can't locate it thanks
Hi do you know how much to fix reprogramming key and window regulator? Is that hart to fix?
Once you're able to break the drain plug loose, this is the easiest oil change on any car I have seen, also the transmission oil change is easy too, since the transmission is technically an automated manual, its basically a trans-axle and takes less than 3 quarts of manual transmission/trans-axle fluid and there is no jack required.
Thanks! My check engine light just came on..hopefully it's nothing 🤞🏼
Loved your accent.... thanks for the video... very informative...
How much did it cost total for a oil change if you did it your self on a 2009 Smart Fortwo ?
I bought the same "European" oil as this guy, and the oil filter was relatively cheap. All together, plus the washer on the oil filter bolt, you are looking at about 40 bucks.
Where did you get the back sticker from? It is very interesting~
purchased it that way
I’m going to use Amsoil Signature Series oil. Any problem with that oil?
That's the best money can buy and price is fair. It's great for running long drain cycles, just change filter 1/2 way through. Use a fuel system cleaner too every 4th tank
That looks stupid easy. I may just do my own oil changes!
It really is, alot of these dealerships out here really stiff you on labour costs.
There's a dude named chrisfix on youtube who basically makes you a mechanic overnight, if you wanna get deeper into this
@@asunflorawearingahat2540 Yeah, but Chris doesn't particularly know much about fixing smart cars.
Thank u!!!
What oil do you use for a 2017 turbo?
Always use gloves, not sure why I didn’t use gloves. 🤣 Great video! Thank you. Happy parking.
You use a Fram oil filter? All my German cars use Mann/Wix oil filters including my Smart CDI Turbo. Fram is garbage.
You didn't use a new seal ring (what you call a washer) on the oil drain plug...
You always open the oil cap on top before oil change , if you dont it can hold vaccum and trap oil in the cylinder head
You put that oil filter on way to tight. You are suppose to put the filter on till it contacts the base filter plate and give it a little bit more of a turn. Heat and expansion does the rest.
issa smart idea to do your own anyway At least you what is going in your car she'll love for it in the long run i$$a but it's worth it 🚗
How hard to replace the alternator, serpentine belt, power steering pump, and air conditioning parts?
HI, a socket type tool would be better, the adjustable spanner looks to on its last legs, good video though.
This guy has a top notch accent! Lol
thank you
Auto Repair Guys where are you from?
You can't get all the oil out like that. You're supposed to use the drain plug or use an oil extractor or electric pump from the top.
You never reset the oil life at the dash....
What filter is? what number of filter? PH6607 is?
I left this video when I saw the crescent wrench.
It's very strange because i am french and when i change oil, the smart center advise me to put oil 5w30....
Ismael Bezzaouya
Smart Centers vary in places. I personally use 0w-40 in case if my mom goes somewhere colder like the mountains or hotter like a desert.
Yeah, it depends on environment. Weather and altitude can effect viscosity.
Forgot to show how to reset the dash warning kight
Fram worst oil filter you can buy.
Sweet little car lol
3.5 oil required!
15/16 wrench fits oil plug.
I know it's the accent but man do I want to tell you to clear your throat
great video but give those FRAM oil filters a big swerve, they are truly junk to the point where they can deteriorate and destroy your engine, theres a reason they are so damn cheap!
Only the base ones, which are coincidentally the one they used.
lol didnt realise the motor was in the trunk.
Always use gloves. LOL I think people wearing gloves to do work on their cars is silly. It's easy enough to just go wash your hands. Nothing in the car is going to harm you.
Smart cars are chick magnets.
Js.
0-40w? On a 3 cylinder? Full synthetic? I could see if it made 100 go but fuklll synthetic wow.
knightrider1545 All Mercedes require full synthetic
MEGLIO IL 5 W 30 ✋🤣☝️
You didnt look for filter leak after starting... 🤔
Please quit using those cheap Fram filters are a piece of junk go the mobile one they're rated the best of all filters what I've seen
Beautiful girl

This is a Mitsubishi engine in this stupid car?
Cheap filter
