Everything we want in life can be boiled down to how it makes us feel, not the actual thing itself. We want to feel real love, acceptance from society, the feeling of security, excitement, bliss, peace, fearlessness
I think I understand, but your talking about units and character and what they want. That certainly has it's place, but it's not what we're talking about here. I say that in tenderness, not rebuke.
What we're talking about here is something above and beyond all of those preferences.
We learning how to want What Is As It Is Right Now. Some unit preferences will remain until they don't. But as conditioning winds itself down, but they are fewer and fewer and there is less and less importance attached to them.
Damn, that hit like a Hammer...

Well that clarifies things! 😄!!!! What an amazing post, Fred, at once dense, profound, and subtle! Who of you out there truly grok this? Are you aware of that "I am" thought and how it creates worlds? Do you see that it is the first thought and that it is self-referential? That it is the first thought of separation because it creates dualities (for example, between what is "I am" and what is "I am not" and between me and you. But if the "I am" is meant to include me and you and all the world, then does it even make sense to say "I am"? Doesn't that imply that there is an "I am not?" So what are you? What was your original face? Vinji

As an alternative to the duality or opposites of I AM and I AM NOT why not think of it as degrees of, or extensiveness of, Presence. Then, all is developing positivity, or retrogressing. Then, NOTness is simply undeveloped Presence.
I am pleased that I am not deluding myself by thinking I know or understand what I am talking about. Strange that in the preceding sentence, I am not, is sandwiched between two of I am. I take it and share it as a funny present from the Presence.
“I AM” creates the first duality. Duality is the binary code which writes existence.
It seems reasonable to conclude that the finite sense of being, the walled- off, located, sense of being that feels owned and personal is fictional, because it consists of unreal sense
testimony; the supposed body that would house it never exists. The supposed reference point of a body, a mind, or self, never is. But the Knowing that is infinite, boundless, and has no self attached to it- what is not the "human" experience- is the only real or true Awareness.
False awareness requires false /temporal reference points.

Nothing exists, and I AM nothing. That’s the only existence there is to be had. It’s the dual nature of non-duality.

How can we know what we are? so many theories and endless ideas in the world. listening to you in a bunch of videos. I don't feel or know what I am. Something is happening and not even sure if that is so. This may be a dream or nightmare. who or what is creating or producing this Dream. you're expressing a perspective, "this truth"...whatever is producing this "Dream" has forms/units with many questions, ideas, searching, wonderings, frustrations, etc....why would it produce such a "dream"...may be no "why"....
And the real bitch of it is that you CAN'T STOP watching the damn videos! IT won't let "you." Isn't that awful? I remember it so well.
You're never going to "figure it out," which is what you're trying to do. It's unfigureoutable.

Attention, consciousness, sense of being rise and fall to something a priori to it. Sense of being is just a sense of being not the truth of being. This is big. You have blown my mind Fred. Thanks. So I was having difficulty with the sense of being coming and going, and I thought I was lacking because I couldn't seem to make sense of being grow into being. So my inquiry lead to what does consciousness come and go to? We know consciousness disappears during deep sleep, but something remains because sleep does not cause a cessation in my being. That ever present awareneness during deep sleep is what consciousness is arising to. I was trying to force the sense of being to last longer and feeling like a failure because I couldn't. The nameless and formless "what is", which consciousness arises and disappears to is the absolute awareness which I am.

I have been a youtube advaita student since 03 when I read Nisargadatta's I AM THAT. Recently I read the Book of Undoing and Awaken Now and listened to them several times on Audible. Coming across your teaching videos and these books have been great gifts. I did Zazen and Vipassana meditation for years.and studied sutras till I was blue in the face. When I started listening to this good old boy I started to "get it".

Fred always finds surprising ways to get you off guard and shake your beliefs when you thought you had got rid of them, pushing advaita's boundaries even further each time. The sense of being replacing the rehashed "I AM". Brilliant.
At first glance it seems like something of a pissing match. But you know it's important. Excellent.
Rare to here teaching at that high of a level. Its very welcome. If I may add (this may be subtle for some), like the questions… is there anything outside of attention or space….we can add: is there anything outside of existence? OR is there non-existence? if there is non-existence, that means that non-existence exists, which puts non-existence “inside” existence. You must be even prior to, the source of, and are existence, consciousness and spaciousness/limitlessness or otherwise referred to in Vedanta in Sanskrit as Sat-Cit-Ananta.
You raise a great point that many miss which is that you can’t use words to describe what we are or the I. Its make it hard to talk about it directly which is why we use pointers such as existence consciousness and limitlessness.

“Sense” is an action. I am that which senses. I sometimes have a sense of not-being. Paul and Fred may not exist. Perhaps there is no one else other than me who can confirm my existence. Perhaps I go eternities of non-existence.
But I am that which is. I am that I am. I created the word “is” in this dream to describe myself. And I am nothing. Yin contains yang within it, and vice versa.
You are not nothing and not no-nothing. You are prior even to those concepts.
I was with you until you claimed, "I created."
There is no "creator." It's all just happening.

Hi Fred, using the Christian mythology, would it be correct to say that God the father, is awareness, consciousness is the holy spirit, and Christ is the first or the collective I am!!!
I think it would be closer to say That Which We Cannot Even Speak Of (the Unlimited Potentiality) would be God the father, that Awareness would be the Holy Spirit, and Christ would be Consciousness. These are arbitrary divisions; there's only That Which We Cannot Even Speak Of.
@@FredDavisNonduality Using the limited language, then is it correct to say there are 3 levels of understanding!
1. That you are the universal consciousness, and not the individual body.
2. Then going one step back, you realize you are also the awareness prior to consciousness ( in deep sleep, where consciousness wasn't stirring but I was aware of that!.
3. And ultimately I guess the Good head,
And all three are as one!!!
We don't ever want to think we "have it figured out". We're trying to use language to explain something unlanguagable, and which absolutely is NOT figureoutable . :-) The final understanding may well be that there simply is no understanding This.

Hi Fred.At 17 min I may be jumping in too soon.How about space as only a concept.Since there is no thing outside consciousness then consciousness must be that space in which everything appears.Many thanks for taking the time to deliver and post these discussions .I was really hanging in there with you till you introduced 'awakeness'.I was thinking of awakeness and consciousness as being synonymous.I know that there are times when I am self conscious and not conscious.But the not being conscious is only known after the fact.For instance I may drift into a reverie where there is stuff going on but without a sense of self awareness.Then I become suddenly self aware and think 'oh, I was in a reverie'.This really bugs me.It means that for brief periods of time 'I' operate without a sense of 'I' or even a sense of 'being'.
Hi, Adrian. I don't post my videos as discussions, I post them to present the truth as I know it. People sometimes make discussions out of them, but I never debate what is seen.
Awakeness as I speak of it is not dependent on a body. Consciousness is. Awakeness does not depend of consciousness, but consciousness is dependent upon Awakeness.
It's a bit too much to go into here. That's why I hold satsang every Sunday.
Still, the sense of being is itself phenomenal, but "I" can't find what witnesses it.
Precisely. There is a SENSE of being, but no one has it.
Indeed, it feels as if "I" am witnessing the feeling of being present. However, even this subject-object relationship is also witnessed in Awareness. When I try to turn "inwards" to find this awareness, I can't find anything. Just emptiness, which is also witnessed.
I need to sit with this for a while.
Who needs to sit with it? Can you find an owner to that statement?
Haha, I'm limited by language, as you even admitted in the video. The person (homo sapien) is not the owner of this consciousness, for it appears in consciousness. Indeed, no one owns this presence.
I suppose "remaining" as the sense of being needs to "happen", rather that the attention moving to "objects". Moreover, "I" eventually aim for the presence itself to fall away. Again, the language cannot grasp it properly.
There is, however, much fear arises when going beyond the "I" thought.
@@Joshua-dc1bs I know the fear that you speak of. There is a fear that the sense of being itself doesn’t exist, and never did or could. And that fear is correct. There is no sense of being. There is nothing. Nothing is the only thing that can conclusively be said to exist, and there is nothing to be afraid of.
Finally an understanding of advaita...no chants...sanskrit..whhoo ah...just simplicity

Consciousness is not fruit of this body. This body is a dream body, just like your body in a dream with dream environment. Before body is, I am... or II if you will...
Conscious IS the fruit of the body. What You are is PRIOR TO consciousness AND PRIOR TO I AM.
