Very early snippet of News At 5:45. Wouldn’t have been going for a year at this point. Didn’t realise HTV used that theme music either, it was used at around the same time for Scene South East on Southern.
This is rare. Alistair Burnett also read News At 5.45 I was actually born in July 1977. For me I liked it when each bulletin would have its distinctive then eg News at 1, 5.45 & 10. Alistair Burnett legendary newsreader RIP
In those early days, Alastair Burnett was the main host of the 545... According to Wikipedia, Michael Nicholson hosted the 545 on Fridays but Burnett was the main reader until 1980, then after he left, Michael Nicholson and Leonard Parkin became the main presenters until about 1986... Sadly, none of those three are with us any longer
@@DaveAndBeth1978 1977 was my year of birth. And thanks for letting me know about Burnett as original host. I'll always remember him for News At Ten and Leonard Parkin on 5.45 and News At One. But yes Michael Nicholson I also remember. Peter Sissons was News At One and C4 News later. Like you said all no longer with us sadly 😢
Peter Sissons also read the News at 5:45 on Fridays in the early days of the bulletin, before moving on to News at Ten for a while. Later he took Leonard Parkin's place on News at One, who took over the 5::45 bulletin for a couple of years, before returning to the 1 o'clock programme. Peter Sissons eventually left ITN for the BBC.
@@ianmcclavin I 1st remember Peter Sissons on News At 1 then Channel 4 News. Then later BBC. Leonard Parkin another legend on 5.45 and then again at 1.00
If memory serves, the debacle about Totterdown was that the council received one government letter of approval and went ahead with demolition before receiving a second necessary letter, which, when it arrived, blocked approval. Dear old Ken Rees, who died yesterday. I remember him asking Jeremy Thorpe at a press conference when he was under suspicion whether he had ever had a homosexual experience. Thorpe's lawyer interjected to object to such a question.
Back in 1993 a couple of friends heard the KLF were going to be at HTV studios on Bath Road so they went down there to see if they could meet them. They asked the receptionist if the rumour was true, and she said she'd ask Richard Wyatt to come down to confirm. They ran off as the thought of meeting such a huge local star would have been too much 🤣🤣 they were brothers also called Wyatt!
There was a lot of spill over signal back in the UHF and VHF era of TV. In Ireland, people in Dublin could pick up BBC and ITV from Belfast and also Wales, and Dublin was well outside of both regions LOL.
@christopherhulse8385 I'm surprised that the map doesn't show a significant overlap into South Wales as I believe a number of Welsh viewers in that area could pick up the signal from Mendip as good as from Wenvoe
@johnking5174 in 1982, when I was 14, me & my family were on holiday in Blackpool & I were able to pick up RTE Radio 2 (now 2FM) on 612 AM. I'd heard from a relative living in Ireland that they played some great music on that station, but living in the North-East meant the signal was very weak & further compounded by Radio 4 having a relay on 603 AM. Great to hear it while on holiday though
Southern used the same theme music for "Scene South East", their twice-weekly opt-out from the overall region's news programme, broadcast from their studio in Dover.
Brilliant. I’ve been transported back to being a 5 year old. I’ve not heard those theme tunes for years, especially the Report West one. I remember singing along to it as a little boy. By the way, did they film it in a corrugated steel shed?
There was quite a big overlap between HTV West and Westward / TSW / Westcountry. Viewers in North Devon could have received HTV by pointing their aerials towards the Wenvoe transmitter.
HTV West and Westward/TSW/Westcountry both liked to imply a larger claim on the South West than was reality; in actuality the former didn't really go any further down than Taunton whilst the latter was pretty much a Devon & Cornwall station which happened to cover small bits of the Somerset/Dorset borders.
@@pak8606 HTV was recievable in parts of Swindon and the relay at Seagry court was HTV, but it was also covered by ATV from Oxford. Even Southern could be picked up in some parts. I would suspect Cheltenham & Gloucester were ATV because they were served from Ridge Hill, don't think the Mendip transmitter reached that far.
John Suchet was also a 5:45 presenter at one time there is a video of a Granada Reports opening with a John Suchet 5:45 closing from October 6 1980 the day Manchester City sacked Malcolm Allison
As far as I can remember from 1976 it was usually Sir Alastair Burnett (with Michael Nicholson on relief duties)... Leonard Parkin and Michael Nicholson were the main presenters from about 1979 to 1983-ish...
@@DaveAndBeth1978 And Burnet would have returned to NEWS AT TEN soon afterwards, though in the following year Andrew Gardner had left for Thames Television’s local news service so Reginald Bosanquet partnered with Anna Ford and Burnet I am assuming.
Blimey! No autocue but at least it wasn't in black and white. And as for the hair......I had to watch from behind the sofa.....Happy days :)

Loving the closing credits for ITN 545, especially the font (Microgramma) - R.I.P. Alastair Burnet!
The Guv Of Wythenshawe Agree and also the Sony “portable” Trinitron TV on the presenter’s desk...
When did he pass away? Alistair Burnett.

Graham Miller’s tie is awesome
And his hair too!
The flares that must have gone with his suit would have been huge too
This News at 545 theme lasted until 1988, nice to see a pre-1980 video

The HTV West area map behind the newsreader is a bit optimistic, showing coverage well into Devon!

@@johnking5174 I heard that as well, back when Ireland had only 1 TV station!
It’s more likely it’s showing coverage as a “second ITV” through Rediffusion and British Relay cable systems.

Graham Miller was also the sports news on Thames News.
Life is all memory
Had they been using that same theme music for Reports West since the 60s? And Graham Miller looks like he's been given a spoof-style retro makeover!
Southern used the same theme music for "Scene South East", their twice-weekly opt-out from the overall region's news programme, broadcast from their studio in Dover.

From the weather map it looks like HTV West had claimed a big chunk of Westwards area.
There was quite a big overlap between HTV West and Westward / TSW / Westcountry. Viewers in North Devon could have received HTV by pointing their aerials towards the Wenvoe transmitter.
The map was interesting. Looks like Barnstaple and Bideford and shaded green but pretty sure that area was covered by Westward

Swindon would have been HTV I expect. Were Cheltenham and Gloucester HTV or ATV/Central?
Were Taunton and Yeovil HTV or Westward/TSW?

Wiltshire had HTV & also ATV/Central for Swindon but Salisbury was primarily Southern/TVS I think. What about Taunton and Yeovil?
You could only get htv in the westward ho/appledore area on the old vhf/405 line system.
I had no idea that Martin Freeman was old enough to host Report West back in '77...😉
I can see the likeness!! That's a very youthful-looking (late-20s) Richard Wyatt with the ginger hair.

Mark Gaughran yes.
Yes, it's the same, and was also used by HTV Wales for Report Wales. The title of the music is Telegraph House by Keith Papworth.
You can listen to a high quality version of the theme at www.dewolfemusic.com/SEO/SEOList.php?type=2&id=374
Also used by Border Television for Lookaround in the late 70s & early 80s
