  • Took a video of my "new" Ariens 832 snow blower. The blower has an eight horsepower (HM80) Tecumseh engine with a 32-inch bucket. Bought it from a retired gentleman, a precision grinder by trade, who posted it on Craigslist a few months back. He said he purchased it new in 1975, used it a few years and then winterized & stored it in his walkout basement after his neighbor gifted him a 1979 Ariens 1032 when moving south.
The 832 starts up on the first or second pull if I do my part. Replaced the muffler with a New Old Stock part found online (actually was for a minibike - I took off the deflector). Also rubbed cross-country ski wax on the inside of the chute. Snow just glides off. I also installed an Impeller Kit as it was just dribbling out slush when first purchased. Now it throws about 40% farther and I haven't had to clear it yet. It throws about 40 feet with dry snow and 33 feet with wet. Fresh fuel has Sea Foam added for good measure. The original owner followed the instructions meticulously and took off the fuel tank every spring for storage. He also put on a new scraper bar and skid shoes.
The Ariens is a model 924016 / Serial No. 00404 with matching numbers. The teardrop bucket is model 924012 / Serial No. 010030. This thing is built like a tank and works like a Swiss watch. Hoping to get many good years of service out of her.

I have two older Arien’s snowblowers. They are built like a tank. Bulletproof. I sold a brand new 8.5 hp troybuilt snowblower when I got the older 1970’s Arien’s. My son and I each have one the run ,start blow snow like there’s no tomorrow. Can’t go wrong with an older Arien’s. I think they were built better than todays Arien’s snowblowers. Great video. Thanks

I have a 1976 Ariens 832 that I bought used for $450 in 1978. I still use it in Michigan 35 years later. Mine came with snow chains and they are just about half worn though. The best thing I did was add an electric starter. I bought a used one for $10.00. The wide tires are called turf tires because back in the 70's you could remove a couple of speed bolts and replace the snowblower with a 30 inch lawnmower attachment. A large rotary broom for sweeping parking lots was also an available attachment in those days. Ariens in those days were built to last.

So far the turf tires have been able to get up our steep driveway OK. I wanted to cut a path through our yard and clear an area for our dog, but couldn't make it through the 20" plus snow drifts. Maybe the chains would have helped. My Ariens did not come with a starter, but I would add one in a heartbeat if I found one for $10.00. As is, it starts on the first pull - would just be nice as backup.

Lee, I just checked Ebay for "Tecumseh electric starter" and there are a ton of them out there from $29 to $79. Just to give you an idea of what you are looking for Ebay Items 161204332647 & 261376899911 look like the starter I installed. It is super easy to install. If you look on the right (passenger side) of your engine you will see a tin cover over a cutout in the flywheel housing, this is where the geared end of the starter goes. You will also see the threaded bolt holes for mounting the starter. On the tin housing on top of the engine, toward the rear you will see two inward dimples and that is where the switch/power cord housing is attached by two self tapping screws. And that is all there is to it. I highly recommend the electric starter. After 20 or 30 years they take a little more than one pull. Especially in zero weather, besides that I am no longer the thirty-year-old I was when I first bought it.
Chains are a must for me, my driveway melts and refreezes in to ice and you need the chains to go anywhere. I tried it one year without them and soon put them back on after a storm or two. Jerry

Being a late 70s model, it will have the adjustable carb on it. Reach under the bowl and turn the jet out a quarter- half a turn. It surging a little bit, which means it needs a touch more fuel. Do this and you'll see that it will run perfect!
Great machine btw. Its in flawless shape!

Wow, what a great looking machine. I have a 1970 Ariens Sno-Thro and absolutely love it. I bought it because of how its made, thick steel that can stand up to clearing my gravel parking area in the back. I actually bought 2 of them and used one for spare parts. I did end up installing rubber paddles on the impeller because we have been getting a lot of wet snow and the machine would clog. I bought it with a replacement newer HSK70 engine that needed some work, it looked like the person who installed it messed with the carb. Come to find out the HSK70 has a plastic knob on the end of the throttle that runs horizontally which was hitting the chute control crank in the down position, previous owner totally messed up the carb probably trying to make it start and run. To fix the issue i simply pulled off the plastic knob, leaving the throttle lever in place. I removed and rebuilt the carb to original specs and settings. Now it starts 1st pull at half choke. Because we hardly have big snow storms where i even need the snow blower I always use Seafoam in the gas container, i feel it keeps the carb clean and gas fresher so it runs right. I even bought a used electric starter and have yet to even need to use it since it starts so well by hand. I took a lot of the machine apart so i can inspect everything, replaced things like worn axle flange bushings, worn keys, then thoroughly cleaned everything with degreaser. Last thing i will say is i like how it runs on its own, the one handed operation to make it stop is simple and easy on my hands at the end of the day.

I have my grandpas 1969 model 10964 which came with a 7 hp. Now on its 4th engine that I am aware of. I decided to up it to the Predator 301. 8 hp Hemi. SO Yes I have a 69 Hemi.. ;-). As with everything else it has taken some encouragement on my part to keep the old gal going but she sure tosses the snow. Hoping for a big snow year this time around.
My first time using it was the Halloween blizzard of 1991. Snow as way over the bucket in depth but she worked like a champ. Well until I came across a frozen leather glove. old gramps didn't like shear pins and had grade 8 bolts in the augers. Well too the pinion gear out. I could not believe I found one for $ 14 and tossed her in. Several carb overhauls, a couple engine replacements but hey that's why we live in Minnesota.

Wow, what a memory! I (my parents) bought a new Ariens 724 back in 71-72 time frame, that I used to clear driveways before school each morning. Sadly, all good things come to an end. My first season with it, I was in a bicycle accident (hit by car), that ended my snow clearing and had to sell it - couldn't afford the payment on it. I sure did enjoy it for the short time I had it.

My father bought a similar Ariens snow blower in around 1976. He plowed his gravel entrance which is 350 feet long up until the end of the 90's. My sister inherited it with my father's house and her husband the snow blower it until 2008 when he bought a tractor to clear this 350 feet long entrance. One mishap: one day he forgot to check the oil level of the engine and the engine passed out. He found a used engine for it. In 2010 I took the snow blower to my place, last year the strap was slipping ,the friction wheel died on me. Then I had the machine overhauled by a local mechanics (I have no garage to work on it --- too bad) It cost me a belt ,new skids, new belt housing, and a new friction wheel.
    Just costs me $300.00 CDN.
I taught that this overhaul would make a big impact on performance. --Just a little.
Since I need a machine that throws far (3 car wide entrance) I was thinking of buying a new Ariens but after a friend told me to look about an impeller modification on the internet, I decided to give it a try -- because it made sense to me.
Yesterday I looked at the impeller, it was warned out by the gravel abrasion during all those years.
There was a gap between 3/8 to a half inch between the housing and the impeller.
Then I cut 4 rubber pieces from the side of an old winter tire and I made my self a impeller kit which I installed.
Now the machine is 38 years old.
Yesterday there was some left over snow in my drive way : I could see the impeller kit makes a big difference, I can't wait for the next snow storm to really try it.
I am sure the original engine would still be working if it was not deprived of oil.
    These machine are almost indestructible.
Moral of the story if you have an old snow blower like this that is throwing the snow a few feet, do not sell it but install an impeller kit and then you will have a brand new old machine that will work for years.
Final word: As Tecumseh don't make those engine any more: if you ever have to throw away any old snow blower that use a Tecumseh engine, at least keep the engine and sell / give it to your local snow blower mechanic's it may find another foster machine.

I just picked up a free '73 Ariens with a plug in electric start last year from a guy who said they only used it a couple years prior and left it sitting since. I took the carb in to have it cleaned out after we couldn't get it clean, put everything back together and started right up after some minor fiddling. I read that the 7hp motor is a bit underpowered, but who knows, maybe those people were trying to do ten foot snow drifts or something, will be nice for the occasional driveway clearing :D

  • @russellstephan6844

If doing the impeller modification on an even bladed thrower, save yourself some effort and just put the wipers on two opposite paddles. There's no need for them on all the paddles. In addition, you're just creating unnecessary friction for the impeller.
I have a Ariens 520 and a 824. The 824 has four paddles and the 520 three. The 824 only has two wipers. I had to do all three in the 520 to keep the impeller in balance. I *could* have done just one paddle and welded a counter weight opposite the wiper paddle. But, I didn't want to remove the auger transmission and balance the impeller/shaft combination.
Love the old iron of the earlier Ariens machines. They are well worth the effort to keep refreshed and functional.

People can run what they like, but I almost hate to see that done to a classic machine. I had an old ST504 that was far too abused to ever be a "classic" anything and when I wanted to get more performance out of it I just put an over drive pulley on it to increase the impeller speed 50%. The nice thing is I could return it to stock by just putting the stock pulley back on.

I had a Ariens like that only difference it was a 8 24. I got it for the low low price of free. It ran and worked great when I got it. I used it for 4 years then gave it to a buddy. He had it for 3 years and the last I knew it was still going. Now I can't use a walk behind snowblower due to my tendinitis in my shoulders. I can't hold it down no more without my shoulders hurting. So now i bought a snowblower for my 30 year old Craftsman tractor.

Lee, If you keep the augers greased and pull your wheel spindles in the Spring and throw some grease on them, change the oil regularly that machine will last longer than you.

I used to test snow-throwers for Sears years ago. Our benchmark was always an Ariens. That was the one to beat. Documented how many pulls it took to start, checked RPM daily, temperature outside, how much oil they used, how much fuel, total running time, breakdowns, throwing distance, personal opinions [likes/dislikes]. When it came time to purchase a snow-thrower, I chose a John Deere 726 mainly because it had larger tires. Ran that machine for 32 years. Then I bought a JD 826; a GREAT machine. At one time, ALL throwers had a Tecumseh Snow King Engine; and for good reason. They were the best.

I have a 1977 832 that my father bought new in 1977 and it starts on the first pull! Parts are still available for it so why not keep it going? The only thing I don't like are the handles sit lower than the newer ones so it's a little uncomfortable to use for long periods. I JUST spooned on new rubber this year for the first time. I believe the JD dealers now sell Ariens along side the JD's which are Ariens painted green. (If memory serves)

That is nice ! Original paint too?
We had an 8hp one back in about 1970. Think it was a 26 or 28" wide model.
Yes had tires smaller than yours and with chains.
I got up at about 4am every snow day and snowblowed 13 customers before school, all through the 70's!
Back when it was typical to get 2, 3, or 4 feet of snow overnight! (top of NY state)
That Ariens we had always started maybe 3rd pull with the choke on. Let it warm up a few minutes then took her out down the driveway. That thing blew so much snow through those years I couldn't believe it. Busted my ass doing it, but that was my side job. That gave me the money to buy gas and oil for the snowmobiles!
Sold the blower about 12 or 15 yrs ago to a co worker. He said he had a long driveway to do also. (couple hundred feet)
Last I heard it was still running!
    Wish I still had it!
May be looking for another one for that matter.
Could still use one around the house where my truck plow can't reach.

Nice machine, but that carb needs some attention !! Also, Try letting the machine idle for a few minutes after working it and always take it out of gear (the impeller) before killing the engine. It was sad to see you shut it down so abruptly.

I'm having trouble finding parts as I need a new carburetor for it because the one it has in it is not the correct one, also I need a new exhaust on it too. Any help to where you found parts for this beast of a machine would help me out so much thanks

I bought one exactly like this, used, from Charlie Brown's, in Hartford, VT, in 1988. It always started like a champ and did the job, but as my back deteriorated, the slightly too low handlebar/control setup became too much of a hardship to endure. I am only 5''- 9", but it was still too low, as if designed for women of small stature. I did a lot of work with that blower and the extended hunched over position was murder.
There were a couple of winters back then that the snow piled too high to throw over with this Ariens, about 8' to 10' high along the driveway and walkways. It all starts coming right back down to where it came from. The door yard kept getting smaller and smaller and smaller. Paths to the house were like WWI trenches with no view. I had to hand carry shovels full of snow to the edge of the road in the driveway and then use the blower to move the snow across the road. We don't get winters like that any more.
I once blew a ton of dry horse manure out of a small barn with that snowblower. Worked like a charm. Made a pyramid of horse dung in the barnyard.
The Ariens was still running when I passed it on and moved up to a brand new '96 Kubota B2100 HST tractor with B2660 blower. I still run that rig.
Change your oil every fall. Run the gas tank dry and drain the bowl before storage in spring. This Ariens should be dependable.

Between this Ariens and a Husqvarna 150BT backpack blower (for the light fluffy stuff) I've not had to use any salt this year. Hoping that will help keep the rust at bay. Been trying to find all the spring rituals for cleaning and preserving these machines. Appreciate the input and feedback - Cheers!

They run a long time but best to just replace when they go bad. You were very lucky to find such a nice unit and better to spend money on that instead of any new one. It will out last you probably. Enjoy. Great video.

Nothing like the Tecumseh Snow King engines. Tons of low end torque; they love to work and will pump snow all day long. Just keep that carb clean, change your oil, use good fuel, warm them up before pushing them hard and let them cool down after you do. They will last for years.

Cut some strips from a sidewall of a tire, if it's a 4 blade impeller you could get away with only putting 2 on the ones apposing. If it's a 3 do all 3. Some bolts or tap screws and you're good! I did it to a very similar blower of the one in the video.

I purchased it online, but you can make your own with heavy-duty rubber (single stage rubber paddles, mud flaps, or a tire sidewall work well), some screws, bolts and washers will work. Some use self-tapping screws. I bought some POR15 to keep the rust at bay. My Ariens needed a 4-inch plate to help keep the rubber tight and in place.
