- An introduction to Nikon's D7500 camera. The tutorial is designed for Penn State students, but gives a general overview of the camera's features and how set the camera's basic settings - exposure, focus, white balance, etc.
The 'cheat sheet' mentioned in the video is here:

I purchased my camera over a year ago and have struggled with understanding the exposure triangle. This was by far the best explanation. Thank you for taking the time to break this down this concept for a beginner that was completely lost.
Thank you so much. My Nikon D5600 gave up the ghost recently, and the D7500 I ordered as a replacement finally arrived at my local camera dealer's store. With the D5600, I used the touch screen to set ISO, white balance, metering, bracketing etc. TheD7500 appears to have a button for everything -- well, almost everything. I never would have figured out the purpose(s) of all those buttons without this tutorial..
Gave up the ghost? U German
Just got my D7500. Switching from a D5500. This was a great introduction. Saved me hours with the manual.
I dont understand why only handful people have saw this video but i think it should be watched by every hobbiest, photography enthusiast, beginner or newbie i mean this video should be viral you explained every aspect every little detail, it just fit into my brain i am about to buy this camera and i already know more about it thank so very much keep the good work up man👍👍👍
Donald, I truly enjoyed your video on the D7500. Absolutely wonderful. I certainly learned a lot about the camera. Your presentation, enunciation, and taking time to explain was so easy to understand. Again, thank you.
Best video about the d7500 ever!
I've watched many. Love to see more tutorials about the d7500 if you have any. And i did download the cheat sheet. Thanks so much.
Btw: you can totally be a voice over for Edward Norton. Dead on...
Best tutorial I’ve ever come across 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
You are a great teacher. You can hear the patience in your voice. I'm an audio engineer, so I know! Thanks for this video. I just bought the camera and it will really help.
Thanks very much!
Hi Ken! Look where i found you hahaha
Very relax voice
BIG BIG BIG
thank you I was given a d7500 as a gift and have only ever had point and shoot. Somehow you managed to provide more useful information in half hour than the last six videos I've gone through.
For someone like me with no skills in this your teaching method is world class thank you again
Thank you! Glad I could help! Enjoy the D7500 :)
After a D40, many years with a D90 and a Coolpix P7100, I have just purchased in 2024 a new 7500 before they stop selling them, as I want the compatibility with my existing equipment. Despite my previous experience, I find the camera somewhat awe-inspiring, so many thanks for this tutorial which shows how to find the basic settings. The "crib sheet" is also a great idea, and many thanks for making this still available today!
😎
This tutorial was a great help, much more informative than the one that was presented by Nikon (one that came with the purchase of the camera). I saw the comment about having an Edward Norton voice. I concur that you sound like him! The pace was great and it was easy to just pause, try it out on my camera and then resume.
Got this camera two weeks ago. Bought it in a bundle with lots of extras at a fantastic price. Gonna love your tips and educational videos and programs. Again, great job. Thank you.
I have a D7500 which I love and use for some work for iBCSCorp. This is the best tutorial I have seen. Well done. Thank you!
Excellent tutorial. I just bought a D7500 and I'm new to DSLR photography. This was very helpful Thank you.
Hi Donald Thank you it was a great video it helped me to well understand my D7500
What a great tutorial! Thank you for your informative yet relaxed presentation; I’m moving up from the D5500 & this helped enormously with the learning curve. I’ll keep this saved for quite a while!
I bought this camera recently, and it does have some new buttons. If I were new to cameras, this would be an incredible video for me or anyone. Loved it.
Thank you for the information it truly helped. I've had my D7500 for a couple of years now, and I'm still learning new things about it. I've always taken pictures, but just recently starting getting more serious with my camera. I was having a problems figuring out some of the settings and after watching your video, my camera makes more since now.
I'm glad the video helped! Thanks so much for the comment
This was a great video. You explained everything so a complete beginner could understand it. I made notes and I will watch again but I have already learnt a lot.
Thank you!
Thank you, you explained the Nikon D7500 in a way that made it easier to understand.
Thank you. You've explained so much. Not just for the D7500 but in the general sense!! Appreciate it!!
Excellent tutorial-I have watched several since purchasing my new d7500, and the is by far the best!
Thanks! Glad it's useful
AAAAMAZING! Helped me a lot. He explained really how things work. What a great teacher. Thank you
Absolutely great tutorial. I`ve been taking pictures all my life and know absolutely nothing about photography and am trying to learn some things now. Today I have. I`ve subscribed and will definitely continue to learn from these tutorials first from now on.
This was a great video!!
So happy I found this video, Switched from a D3200 my now D7500.
Thank you for this. I just upgraded from my D5100 to the D7500.
What an awesome video detailed and precise I must have listened to this thing 3 times today while driving for work there are only 2 pros and cons to this video the pro is my blood pressure dropped listening to your voice the con is I almost fell asleep behind the wheel! Haha good job I enjoyed it

Thanks a lot, I am new to photography altogether, Got a D7500 recently, This video is very useful for me. Keep the good work going. Thank you.
Great breakdown of the basics of the camera with some basic tips. Really good tutorial. You've got a really soothing, eady to listen to voice.
fantastic video. thanks. just bought a d7500 had a d3200. will watch this a few times.
Very helpful especially with Auto Focus modes!!
Although this video goes over a lot of basics it also covers a lot of cool shortcuts to change settings on the fly. Great stuff
Great video, thanks for sharing.
Wow. Great video. Lucky to find this video.
The only video you need to learn how to shoot using DSLR.
Thanks.
Thank you very much for this great tutorial. It helped a lot to understand the basic settings of the camera!
Thank you for this tutorial. I swapped my D5100 for a D7500 and after making 2000 clicks, I’m still finding new things on this camera body in combination with my lenses. Luckily I don’t have to reset all my settings every time 😉, but it’s a good thing to learn the camera settings 👍🏻. I’ll try to find your other D7500 tutorials!
I'm not a Student of yours but this is useful information, hope to find the rest of your course online. Thank you Gael.
Thank you so much for this video! Well taught.
Hi.
I am satisfied with this camera. One thing that bothers me about it is the neck strap holder. When I hold the camera, the holder on the right side is annoying, it presses my index finger. It's a shame that it's not designed like the other 7000 series. It's even better on my old D80 camera, because the metal neck strap holder is a little higher there and doesn't press my finger. I'm very, very sorry about this and it's confusing. Anyway, everything else is fine. The lack of a card slot and grip does not bother me. Its image quality is sufficient for hobby purposes.
Thanks for the presentation, have a nice day.
Great tutorial... wish I would have found this earlier...
Awesome tutorial 👌

Thank you so much.
Thank you so much for your help.

Great teacher
For photography and video which one is better choice..sony a6400 or Nikon d7500
Exellent Tutorial. Please upload video on how to use gridline for Rule of Thirds (Nikon D7500) because there is no intersection point it bit confusing. Thanks
Great video!
Awesome job thank you
very good explanation.. thank you...
Very helpful...love ur voice.
I am a new user of D7500 .I am facing some problem in the following situation.
Nikon D7500
--------------
The following settings were carried out on D7500
** a1 set to FOCUS PRIORITY
** a6 set to OFF
** AE-L/AF-L set to AF-ON
** Focus Mode set to AF-C
and then AF area mode set to all options one by one .
With the above settings I could take pictures even if the subject is out of focus, whereas my understanding was that shutter cannot be released till subject is in focus . Is it a normal functioning ?
Where as Under similar settings My D 5000 does not allow picture to be taken if the subject is out of focus.
I hope you can clarify and solve the issue.
Thanks in advance
Bala S
Thank you for the vid, thinking about buying the d7500 with the lens 18-140. What do you think of this combo?
Thank you very much for the great video , it helps me a lot , may I ask you please the link for the website you advised to see.
Greetings from Egypt.
Was it me or did it feel like Edward Norton taught me how to use my DSLR?
He does sound like Edward Norton.
Akiga Onefive first rule in camera club...🤣
Now I can't unhear it.
I am Jack's complete lack of surprise.
I just said the same thing. Dead on...😂
Can you help me on my d7500??? My CH only shoots continuously with out flash and then with a external flash..... I could have swore it had flash in CH mode!
Does it shoot continuously, but just slower or not at all? If it's slower, I would guess it's waiting for the flash to recharge between each shot.
Great video! Thank you so much!
hello, I am new here and excited to take this course. You mentioned a cheat sheet. I don't see it attached here. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Here's the link (I also added it to the video description). willyurman.com/teaching/handouts/D7500CheatSheet.pdf
Can you see the settings on the back or do you need to use the top side display
I don't have the camera in front of me, but you should be able to see the settings if you're in live view. I believe you can use the rocker pad to change what is displayed - exposure info, bubble level, histogram, etc.
Hello. Thanks for this GREAT video tutorial. WIll you make more video tutorials for this camera? And if so, when? Of is it possible to purchase a course for this camera? Thanks
Thanks! Glad you liked the video. There are a few more tutorials already online. The classes I teach are through Penn State, and we do offer an online photography class, part of an online degree: www.worldcampus.psu.edu/degrees-and-certificates/penn-state-online-digital-multimedia-design-bachelors-degree/courses
thanks again for watching. Glad it was helpful.
Thank you so much. I will take the online class since I live in Kansas. Thanks again. Your video tutorial is the best i wound so far. Easy to follow and easy to understand for someone, like me/
Yes. I plan to take online photography class. You are the best tell me how to follow your online class.
Again thanks.
The video was really helpful💓
Thankyou for such a great tutorial! I took so many notes and have learned so much already! However now that I have changed the settings as the ones showed in the video, every time I take a photo and go back to see what the image looks like all I get is a black image? How do I fix this?
That's very hard to answer without knowing more about your settings. If you have the camera on M (manual mode) and the lens cap is off, then I'd guess your exposure is set incorrectly and the image is very underexposed. Use a slower shutter speed, and turn up the ISO to see if that helps.
Why no mention of the metering modes?
I have the D7500 for a couple years now. But I've notice the colors on the D7500 are darker than on my D7000.
Mine did not include a manual, but had to download the PDF.
Aprecio muchisimo tu explicacion, me gustaria comprar una nueva cámara reflex y la 7500 estaría entre las opciones que me gustan , muy buen tutorial1
So helpful!
I bought the Nikon d 7500 two weeks ago. While shooting in Manual mode, the shutter speed n the aperture value gets changed after or during the click n I have to readjust these settings. The exposure meter has disappeared from the top of lcd screen . . How can I retrieve this setting pl reply
Expand iso range! If the iso range is set not giving it enough room to expand the camera will automatically get exposure from somewhere else.
Thank you very much for this
Thanks it helped a lot
very good thanks
Thank you!
Great tutorial. Thank you!
How can I get a copy of the check list/cheat sheet? It would be a good resource to have.
here it is: willyurman.com/teaching/handouts/D7500CheatSheet.pdf
Where can one get a copy of the "accompanying D7500 Cheatsheet" referenced in this video?

Good stuff,
Just bought this camera. I have one question that's probably an easy question . I feel a little dumb but . When using this for video I want to make a video of myself inside. A 5 minute video and i'll be playing an acoustic guitar for a video lesson. How do I set the focus, if I'm The subject of the video but I'm also also the one taking the video. The mic that comes with is fine because I'll also be recording into the computer and can add Amplifier sim software.. and post edit the audio. It's getting the video in focus that's baffling me. Thanks
Brad H not a dumb question at all. The calmer a isn’t ideal for this because the lcd doesn’t swivel around. You could purchase an external monitor but short of that if you have a friend who could stand in for you, mark where they stand, focus in manual mode and then stand in the same place. If it’s bright use a small aperture (large f/number) for more depth of field. Or, if it’s just you I’d probably use autofocus and just shoot a couple of short test clips to make sure you’re sharp.
@@Wyurman Thanks for the reply.. A smaller aperture seems to help a lot. I focus on the edge of the guitar on my chair, then I when I get back to sit in the chair it's within the depth of field. It's probably not perfect, but visually it's not offensive. Thanks
Thank u very helpful
Hi, thanks for your video was great.
I have a question regarding Lenses Can I use D7500 lenses for full frame Camera too like D810
If you want to keep the full frame you need to use Nikon FX lenses. If you use the DX lenses the image will be cropped on the 810
Will Yurman Thank you so much
