Recently someone requested physical alternatives to self-harm that weren't just distraction techniques and I loved that because when it comes to self-harm, it's usually about the physical, somatic release- not the thinking about it that's the problem.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) has a whole skills module based around physical alternatives called self-soothing where you use your 5 sensations (sight, sound, taste, smell and physical touch), plus movement to cope with problematic urges, thoughts and behaviors.
This video features 33 of these self-soothing skills as physical alternatives to self-harm that aren't distraction techniques.
0:00 Distraction is NOT enough
1:29 Sight Skills
1:58 Sound Skills
2:20 Smell Skills
2:51 Taste Skills
3:35 Physical Touch Skills
5:52 Movement Skills

// ABOUT
Hi- I’m Mallory and my pronouns are (she/hers). I'm a Teen Therapist with a counseling practice based in Woodbridge, CT. This channel is dedicated to helping YOU improve your mental health!
The rates of teens struggling with suicide and self harm are rising and I want to reverse that trend! That’s why on this channel you’ll find I share a lot about coping with anxiety, depression, alternatives to self harm and how to talk to parents and other grown-ups about these challenges.
My biggest hope is to increase mental health awareness and break the stigma of talking to a therapist so teens can get the help they deserve and need right here, right now.

This might be just me, but am I the only one who's watching this in case my mental health gets worse, even though it's fine now? (Actually it's declining faster than it was before, so maybe I'm not okay)
love your proactiveness! Especially since you can use these coping strategies for less intense emotional experiences, too.
When i feel like im going to do something bad i dance till sunrise hahahaha. even when i have no energy i just dance while sitting on bed it helps me alot ❤️
create yourself a dance routine that you will be proud of and practice to remember the steps
a win situation for memory and physical health too
Yesssss in the wise words of Fall Out Boy: “Dance! Dance!” 💃
Thank you so much! Ive been having the urge to self harm and this helped

Gowri Sivamaye so glad you found it helpful 💛
thankyou so much this is so helpfull
Glad it was helpful!
Personally, none of these will work in my situation, i can’t do anything that anyone will see, because that will cause more trauma, and more stress, i believe I probably need a therapist. But i dont have any money to get one 😕, i need help
Have you tried any of the IMPROVE the Moment skills? I talk about them in this video: ua-cam.com/video/dUx-q6WjD5g/v-deo.html - not sure where you're located but there are often free or low-cost counseling options through your job's EAP program, school counseling, or local town/county services that you can check out. In CT you can call the infoline for free at 211 and they can provide resources for what you're looking for.
@@mallorygrimste 😮thank you so much!
I love this video I do struggle with this and I'm trying to get a counselor right now because my last counselor was not the best and this is helped me a lot I think this is the only reason I'm actually still living and I'm not not living so thank you for that thank you so much now that I'm actually living and get to experience new things I still feel this feeling that I can't describe but I know there's something out there that's just going to make me happy and one day I'm just going to find that and I probably will not ever think about this hopefully
I love your optimism! Hoping you find a therapist you connect with!
Yea
Me too
i don’t wanna live :D
Yikes- have you tried reaching out to a local crisis line for support? Here's a list by country: support.google.com/youtube/answer/2802245?hl=en&ref_topic=9386941
Have you checked out this video yet about how to talk to your parents about wanting to die and get help? ua-cam.com/video/HC4gnTKAzqk/v-deo.html
I would like it if you lived for me :)
