  • Detailed cleaning of ILQ9 Bearings, superior to any ABEC rated bearing. Although this how to video demonstrates the procedure of cleaning sealed ILQ9 bearings, most of the information covered can be used in cleaning any skate bearing. PART TWO of TWO by Lars Hindsley of the Delaware Skate Club

Yes. Remember to dry them, then a single drop of oil. More oil or lubrication draws dirt. You want enough to lubricate but no more than necessary.

from what i understand with sonic cleaners is you should use the basket provided to suspend the item being cleaned to get the best cleaning action

Lubricating bearings is almost an art. Too much collects dirt. It can actually draw it in. The law of diminishing return applies here. A drop is ALL that is needed. Ex. If a cup of soap cleans a square foot clean, and two cups cleans it best, then three cups is wasted. The law of diminishing return is 2 cups. A drop of TRUE bearing oil is all you need. I hope this helps. May not be the best explanation but I tried. I can only say trust me.

Thank You, I learned. I think it's lack of maintenance like this that keeps skates in peoples closets because they begin to run crappy.

Really nice tutorial, helped me a lot when cleaning out my bearings the first time, even though they are simple lame ABEC5's ;) Im done cleaning them now - so Im gonna go out and buy ILQ's tomorrow to replace them.
    Anyway, Thank you.

I use marine grease on mine,,never need to clean,,because no dirt or water can get in,,and they are still good as new,,and glide like butter on my toast

I accidently removed the comment asking what the device is in the video. It's a ultrasonic cleaner. You can find them on Ebay cheap. Don't waste your money on a $200 industrial version. A $20 model will get the job done great.

I've heard great things about bones, but I'm partial to Twincam's ILQ bearings. So I'm unfamiliar with the reverse engineering of a set of bones. However what I can say is that in my video, the grove has a specific purpose for the one-sided cover. I made this video as ILQ's are different than ABEC bearings and I felt the ILQ users needed their own video for properly breaking down and cleaning bearings. NOTE: ILQ PRO's are shielded on both sides and the groove issue is absent with that model.

Again... :-) I have ILQ9 PRO's. You can see they have the orange round cover (nylon shield). Watching the video you'll see I discuss this very point. They are $45 a set. The difference between them and the standard ILQ's are two design points. ONE: Classic ILQ's are closed on both sides while Pro's are sealed on one side with the nylon shield/cover. TWO: That shield is designed for quick & easy removal.

@macdaddy1600 no, it doesn't matter. all bones bearings have the option to add another shield.

Hot water is fine. Boiling is not necessary with what you have. The purpose of boiling water is to create movement and loosen dirt. You can do that by shaking the pot or stirring. Drying... hair dryer, dense fabric free of large lint.

If they are sealed, and you DON'T get them wet. You can go hundreds of miles or a year for example. If you hear sound, you are in need of cleaning. Silence is your friend.

I took a pair of ABEC-7's apart a couple years ago and ended up bending one of the shields... Haven't had any apart since... I have Twincam ILQ-9's with the metal shields on both sides in my K2 Moto Extreme's, and I'm leery about taking them apart to clean them... Wouldn't want to have to replace

1st. of all: Thanks A LOT for your video; very helpful! Happens I have a set of Classic ILQ9, which as you already explained, are closed on both sides. Removing the clips and metal shields I can see there's a lot of brown there (obviously dirt). Since I can't bring the bearings out - plus they seem to be attached one another by a retainer, can I use boiling water to clean them? If so, what would you recommend for the drying process?

Hey to DangerMan, great video on cleaning - appreciate being showed how to completely disassemble the bearing assembly. What about bearings that have been rusted for awhile ... can an ultrasonic machine get the worst of the worst clean? Are there any good signs when bearings should be replaced ... ehh, aside from when they're busted? And how about info on use, care, or cleaning of Bones Swiss Ceramics - are they any better than metal? Thanks much! ... uhh, an one last thing ... I'm checking out the learn to skate stuff, and I'm wondering about controlling my speed going down hills. "Snow plowing" is good but one needs to keep legs far apart. What's good when going down a steep side walk with not much width to work with, and especially with side walk pads being of differing heights? As a beginner, I'm a bit shaky on controlling speed with my heel brake ... (I know, stay away from hills!) ... anyways, thanks again!

      @DangerManXX  10 років тому +2

Sorry for the LATE reply. Really. Rust that bad. I think you'd need to sand it off first. But damn... at that point. You may just want to drop $40 on new balls. You can always put different balls in the same races. Ceramics are really just nylon balls. I've not used them but the upside is they don't heat up like metal and any oil won't break down as quickly. Not sure I'm hooked by that claim but that's the concept. To control your speed downhill, you don't. If you bomb a hill, you better be able to roll it out. Otherwise you need to be able to support ALL YOUR BODY weight on one leg while your other t-brakes, (dragging your other foot by the wheels). We do this often when coming down a bridge like the Williamsburg, Queensboro, or Manhattan bridge. This means take time to build your leg strength. Over time you'll get stronger and then be able to do this. As a Central Park Skate patroller, I'm told to tell you to learn how to heel brake etc... I don't have a brake and the best thing I ever learned as a skater was to toss mine. It forces you to learn everything else. EVERYTHING. To do any of what I'm saying you need to accept that it takes time. Don't rush it, enjoy the journey and over time you'll notice you've elevated your ability in ways you never thought you'd reach. Just keep at it. Don't rush it.

Hi dangerman, are SG9 bearings any good?
I have crossfire xt's which come with SG9 bearings... But you can't get these SG9 bearings open to service them. So should I just buy the ILQ9 bearings? Because obviously the non serviceable SG9 bearings won't last as long?

Two reasons for using tongs. In the boiling water, you'll give yourself 2nd or 3rd degree burns using your fingers. I didn't use tongs in the acetone but it would be wise not to touch the acetone as it is a solvent and is a poison.

Yes just make sure you spin the bearings every now and then as you blow dry them. They may look dry, but there will be water in the crevices so spin them and continue blow drying. Actually I would never recommend the oven method...EVER...use a heat gun or blow dryer.

I've also learned kerosene (paraffin oil in UK) is a good solvent for bearings. It's combustible though. Boom! So not worth the effort.
