I found snowboarding really helped my pumping and flow, esp riding powder. Having said that I am a way better snowboarder than surfer so maybe only helps if your snowboarding is at a decent level.

for real deep powder day is the only thing I'd compare to surfing

At what a point do you know you are good to progress from a foam board? I have been catching green waves on an 8ft foam board fairly consistently now, and turning felt slow and I felt like I really wanted something more nimble, but just went on a trip to Tenerife and got destroyed by most of the waves there, felt ready but now I’m not so sure!

Hey mate!! yeah it sounds like your at that point now! If your board feels like it's hindering your turns, then could be time to step down!! Maybe like a shorter foamie or chunky fish could be worth a try!? See if that allows you to turn more sharply?? And yeah sometimes the waves can have more to do with that than your board!!

@@DanHarmon123 thanks for the reply mate - yeah I will have a think about a smaller board. Off for a week trip to North Devon in Oct so might try to hire a shorter board there.
Yeah the waves were nuts, I was reading Tenerife went nutty when we went - some insane swell from Dungeons hit the Canaries and it was the biggest waves in 50 years. Seems I caught it as it was dying down but was still far too hairy for me.

Great stuff. Visualisation is what I'm gonna try for the first time later today.
Can I ask what surf films you, or other commenters, recommend - It's tricky to find good ones.

Anyone else here learn to surf on a thruster? Cuz dont do that even if you can cuz i cant surf long boards i literally cant catch a wave cuz i can't kick but its a bad idea to start on a thruster cuz it took me about 6 months to a year to learn to go across the wave instead of straight down but learn to turn on a long board and i guess it makes it piss easy on a thruster, i been surfing over 10 years now and i still struggle to do a front side bottom to top turn but going backhand i can pretty much get vertical but can't generate speed unlike frontside. My suggestion learn to surf a long board before going to a thruster

I think understanding line ups, the benefits long term of good localism (and how it is a positive aspect if done right), how you need to spend time at a spot before you can go near the peak (sometimes years) is whats missing with many new surfers and its ruining surf spots around the world (check out the latest Koa and Nate podcast where John Pyzel talks about his recent experience at Ulus) - there is a glut of landlocked so called intermediate surfers buying the latest fancy boards they saw on the internet and paddling out into surf spots with entitled attitudes, no understanding of surfing culture, very low skill levels and putting their own and others lives in danger or at least ruining everyones surf and causing problems (ie people having to explain basic etiquette in the water which often is usually taken badly). Definetly something that needs to be discussed more and would help these surfers much more than learning how to do a snap on their surf skate.

Hey mate!! Yeah of course, excellent point! And yes, definitely not a case of heading out at epic point breaks and getting all the waves , this is definitely where (some) localism can be a good thing!! And also, great shout on the danger side of things... Think I'll make a full video diving into this topic further!! Would be super helpful I think... Thanks heaps for your comment :))
