  • The shores of Dead Horse Bay in Brooklyn are scattered with forgotten treasures from the past. In May 2022 I went searching there with New York detectorist and History Hunter ‪@IndianaTones‬ and we found a variety of miscellaneous objects once owned by New Yorkers decades ago. One thing that struck me in particular during this outing, was the abundance of old toys that end up on the banks of Dead Horse Bay - very similar to the Thames. There's always something poignant about finding old toys - particularly when the children who played with them are almost certainly no longer with us. We also found a few objects which took some identifying! It's always fun to have some mystery finds.
Thank you to Louis DeFoe for taking me out on this beautiful misty day to Dead Horse Bay. Louis also searches for lost jewellery for people and then returns it to them.
Thank you for watching. Please like and subscribe if you enjoyed this video and do go on over to see Louis's channel. He has some great content.
    Thank you.

I was thinking similarly - how does she explain away a pile of rusty junk! Reminds me of the old joke of the old chap crossing the border every day coming home from work, with a wheelbarrow full of horse muck. Finally, on his retirement day, the customs man asked - ok, tell me, what WERE you smugglng n that muck. The old chap replied - wheelbarrows!

It sells upwards for $25,000 a quart. It's used in medicine for lukemia and other young childhood diseases. It gets it's blue color from the high amount of copper in it. Ironically some spiders have the blue blood also because they are related to spiders with 8 legs and everything. Right now only Florida allows licensing to harvest their blood. It take between 75 to 100 crabs to get a quart. The law only allows you to remove 33% of their blood while safe enough not to kill them. I guess if you wanted to be a poaching vampire you could hit that quart with 35 to 40 crabs then you put yourself out of business when you wipe out the species

Hello, so happy you had a great time at Dead Horse Bay. I wanted to share that I used to live off the Indian River near Cocoa Beach/Merritt Island in Florida. We used to walk around along the shore line, find clams etc. One day my fiancé was stabbed by the barb of the horseshoe crab on the bottom of his foot on the heel. It got badly infected but happy to say it has totally HEALED. No pun intended. This happened many years ago. We learned after that to shuffle our feet when we walked so we didnt step on stingrays and those dinosaur crustacean. Love the videos and history lessons.

Yeah, they call those Lady Leg pocket knives. They were popular, they still make them. My grandma had a USN knife, fork, and spoon set that her brother brought back from the Navy after WW2. Those horseshoe crabs aren't in England only because the North Atlantic is too cold! There is no shortage of them here. The Gulf of Mexico is full of them! I guess it is an arthropod....older than dinos, dates back to almost the Cambrian and trilobite times

I gave my daughter a key holder made from the handle of a dinner fork on one of those strong rings. It looked to be made from the sort of flatware that used to be used in hotel dining rooms years ago. It has a nice pattern and shines nicely, but is meant to hold up to repeated use and hot water washing. I gave it to her when she got her license so it’s about 15 years old and she’s still using it!

The little girl in the odd hat in that old TV ad for that vending machine toy or whatever it is was the actress, Patty Duke. She looks younger there than when she was in the 1962 movie "The Miracle Worker", for which she won an Acadamy Award as Helen Keller.

I was so surprised to see the title of this video of you being in New York last year !!! That's wonderful that you come to our country the USA !!! Have you ever been to NC, you would love our coast & our favorite thing to collect off the beaches 🏖️ is seaglass of all shapes & colors & they are beautiful !!! There's other treasures to find also. Awesome you found a horseshoe crab. My daughter & I have touched a live one at our Nature Center in Asheville, NC & the animal person turned it over so we could see all it's little short legs & told us to feel of the legs & their legs were moving the whole time & we did & it tickles your fingers & hands 😅 !!! I think 🤔 that they look like an old army 🪖 helmet !!! You found a lot of interesting things Nicola & your friend too !!! Enjoyed your video very much !!! ❤️🙂

Hi Nicola! Just watched Merrill 's version of your visit with him in NYC too! ( : I love Horseshoe crabs! Not to swim with.ol, but they are fascinating! ( : They are direct descendents of dinosaurs in that they have not changed since then, so I have been told. I have a large. Full exoskeletons, a big and a small one as part of my sea treasures/she'll collection! ( :
Soooo much metal on the beach in NY! So many coins too! It's awesome! ( : Love the lead toy too, shame about all the missing heads though! ) : That knife handle has got to be done on purpose from that knife handle and I agree with Louis, it may be a bottle opener too! ( : Ooh...I love the crystal prisms that hang down on a chandelier! They are sooo gorgeous! ( :
I think the coin you found is very old, Nikola! ( : That palm tree broach is very cute! ( : Oh wow, that is a really lovely marble, Nicola! ( : Wow!! That locket is amazing! ( : And a beautiful, delicate little buckle! ( : Another marble?! You are getting your marble eyes on for sure! Yesssss! ( :
Great story about Louis finding a ring that was lost! ( : That's so funny people ask Louis to find their rings for them! Wow, that is sooo cool, that looks like an old gun. If it is heavy, I would guess it is real! ( :
I bet it was amazing to see the Queen's platinum Jubilee celebration! ( : Bummer about not saving the shark too! ) : Yayyyyyyy! Your horseshoe crab made it back home in one piece! I was afraid it might break! ( : They definitely do look like trilobites, I agree! ( :
That coin was definitely not a quarter! It is a NY world's fair GW commemorative coin?! Wow! ( : Uncle Sam 's play money from the 1950's! Sooo cool!! ( : Lol! That Roy Rogers hat was hilarious! ( :
    Was used f7e; ) '
Those old ads were great!! Soo cheesy and funny! ( : William KornX! The amber bottle you found is really pretty, considering what it was used for! Lol! ) :
Yayyyyyyy! Another video in NYC! That's fantastic! I cannot wait! ( :
Thank you so much for sharing all these amazing finds from NYC! You definitely were not waffling either. Sweetie just joyfully sharing since amazing pieces you found! Sooo nice! ( : Love. Tracy ( : ❤️❤️❤️❤️🤗🤗🤗🤗🥰🥰🥰🥰

It was a perfect atmospheric day with Louis, he mirrors your sweet calm nature. Some great finds, your palm tree sterling Silver brooch and the book locket…loved the seabird captures too! PS peace dollars are huge only made in silver, so that copper coin with the bust could be a commemorative presidential coin. Enjoyed this!

I'm amused by how taken you are with the horseshoe crabs. They are EVERYWHERE here. (I live in New Jersey.). I guess you don't see them much in the UK? I always think they are so ugly. BUT, here is some more interesting information about them for you: Their blood is bright blue. And their blood is useful in looking for contaminants in vaccines. It's worth a google search. That locket was beautiful! What a great find! The only thing I can think of that PS would stand for is "public school". In NYC the schools are often numbered and a student might attend (I'm making this up) PS 124. And that world's fair coin was absolutely fascinating!!!! That was a GREAT find!

Years ago, I brought home a beautiful horseshoe crab shell from a vacation staying on the ocean on Cape Cod. It was absolutely huge - about a foot and a half long! It was in absolutely perfect condition (poor crab was dead and the soft body and legs gone).
