Man when this band came out I was like dam bad dudes
Man, this band killed me since the first time. They were absolutely insane. The musicianship, the songwriting, the performances… absolutely top notch!!! Thanks a lot for watching, I hope you enjoyed the video. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
level....... heaven !
Thank you very much! 👍🏼
The first song I heard from one of the best bands ever! I was hooked . Great drum mix🤙🏾👍🏾
Thanks a lot. I really appreciate your kind words. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
As a music teacher, level 42 fan, but a rather poor drummer, i'm just so impressed by this. Love the open stance left hand hi-hat playing, and you absolutely channel phil gould in your style. I'll be playing this to my drum students to show that sometimes less is more. Just fantastic, bravissimo.
Oh, thank you very, very much. You’re really kind. Phil Gould is one of my strongest influences for sure, and I really love his drumming. This is my humble tribute to his phenomenal talent. I’m really honored that you’re going to show this to your students, I hope they will like it in some way… I will do more about Phil and Level 42 for the future. Thanks really a lot again… 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Wow! Loved this song 30 years. This does the original credit. Awesome
James, thank you very, very much. This is one of my favorite songs ever… Thanks a lot again for your words 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

That snare 😍😎
Thank you! It’s a Yamaha Brass 13”x6.5”, and I love it so much... one of my favorite snares for sure...
Phil would be proud. 👊
Oh, thanks a lot, you’re so kind. I really hope that Phil will discover this video (sooner or later) because it’s really my homage to his talent and his great influence he had on me. Thanks a lot again… 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

@@bobbaruffaldi No worries, keep drumming man!! ✌️😄
Love you.....amazing.......
Thanks! 👍🏼
i've seen many variations and versions of this song, and Level 42 stuff, but this is the best by far?! love the open hand playing and so true to the Phil Gould sound, who is such a huge inspiration to many of us drummers. Would love to hear ya try Mr Pink from the live, A Physical Presence album.. i reckon you would do that version justice too! awesome stuff!!
Oh, thank you very very much. Your words are really kind, and they mean a lot to me. Yes, Level 42 and Phil Gould has been really important in my music world. I tried to respect Phil’s drumming and tried to enter in “that” zone, and, man, it’s not easy. But I listened and played a lot those beautiful tunes that I found the courage to do my rendition, with a little bit of me, just a little, and a lot of love and passion. I’m planning some new covers to do, and I will see what I can do with that tune. Thanks a lot again! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
You are too good ... awesome tribute!!
Thank you very, very much! 👍🏼
Simply excellent. Well done.

One of my very favorite songs. Great choice and better performance. New fan!
And full marks for the open handed playing
Thank you very, very much, I really appreciate your words. Yes, this is probably my favorite songs from L42, and I REALLY love to play open handed. Thanks a lot again and welcome on my channel. More videos are coming!!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
@@bobbaruffaldi I’ve always kind of dreaded this because, playing crosshanded, the 16th notes on the hat just wear me down LOL
Looking forward to more, Bob. Cheers!
@@positivelybobby playing open handed is my natural thing, because I’m ambidextrous. This way, playing 16th notes on the HH for me is really natural, and I’ve practiced a lot this thing at any speed. Thanks a lot for highlighting it, it is really important to play this kind of grooves. Grazie!!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Open Hands, wonderfull played - fantastic! And the Song You picked für Your Tribiute is one of my favourite Level tunes. And by the way: Phil Gould ist on of the most underrated Drummers. (But only for those who dont know how to play an instrument.) Thank You for this gorgeous video, an may Level never be forgotten.
42!
Hi, Thank you very much, and sorry for the delay with my answer... Yes, this song is one of my favorite for sure, and such a beautiful song. You're right, Phil Gould is so underrated, but in my opinion is a fantastic groover, and the way he "push" the music is so unique. He is one of my favorites for sure, he has such a unique voice on the instrument, and Level 42 weren't going to be the same without him. I will do something more from that era. Thanks a lot again!!!
Tremendous! Also, one of Level 42’s best tunes! Great job!

Thank you very, very much!!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I didn’t manage to go and see Level 42 until the Staring at the Sun tour so I missed out on Phil Gould (Gary Husband was pretty good though). They were a very talented band though right from the start. Another great tribute from another favourite album!
Robert, you’re right. Yes, they were such a fantastic band. Thanks a lot for your words… 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Woops! I see that I commented a year ago. My mistake! Can’t help it! The song and your performance are just that good! A haunting track. Love it.

Grazie ancora! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Very nice.

Steve, thank you very, very much. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Very well done indeed & a great cover of one of my favourite drummers also but like Mark i started out on drums but was harassed by my 2 friends to play electric bass guitar & at that time having a drummer wasn't as essential at that time which I found odd at first!..
I reluctantly tried the electric bass guitar out & it just pulled me in & i was hooked...
For as much as i loved, & still do love drums , i hadn't realised that all the great solo acts & band's i was listening to that it was the bass guitar that had somehow worked its way subconsciously into my head without my knowing...
I played some acoustic but enjoyed the drums more but if im truthly honest i was an Ok drummer & nothing more " but a huge fan never the less " but as soon as i picked up thf bass guitar it just felt so natural & as corny as it sounds it felt like the bass guitar was my calling & not playing on the drums... As i could easily play bass lines I'd heard over all the year's straight onto the bass & in the right key as soon as I picked it up but for more demanding bass lines predominantly in funk & rock I just sat there playing the vinyl records over & over until I could play what I was hearing or as best as to what I thought I was hearing...
Self taught is what we are called but like I've said it felt like calling & i was just playing drums until this became apparent to me & if i never reluctantly gave in to my 2 friends bugging me i might never had realised i was meant to play the electric bass guitar...
This was back when the bass guitar was thought of as a boring instrument that you only played a few notes hear & there but all through the 70s as a kid i heard all these amazing bass guitar player's coming more & more forward & more prominent within the band to the point that (within those that knew) those like myself came around to realizing that the bass guitar is one hell of a expressive instrument to play in the correct hands & by the mid 70s the electric bass guitar was becoming an instrument that people actually wanted to go on & play as it could be a very emotive instrument that could dish out funk/rock/pop/soul & also be hell of a sexy instrument to play along to...
Before i started out playing bass guitar i was your typical teenager doing whatever i liked which was listening to music & dating young women & i distinctly remember at a Night Club that was way outside the City (which was fine) as my friend owned a caravan permanently docked at this seaside resort & we'd go through each summer to get away from the usual BS of City Life & while at this night club i was dancing with my friends sister & she asked me what instrument was that & i eventually figured out what one she meant!..
As she knew of the drums & lead guitar but there was an instrument that was playing that to her sounded sexy & made her feel sexy & i told her it was the bass guitar & then she asked me is it normal for that instrument to do this & i instinctively said Yes if its played in the right context & i also told her that without her knowing that most song's people get up to dance to are the one's with great drummer's & bass player's working together as the foundation of any band & its those 2 instruments that are working in what i call the Engine Room & they propel the songs along & therefore make you want to dance...
As i aged i saw this happened in every Night Club or Pub i went to as women would rush up to the dance floor as soon as they heard a great song that was propelled by a great drummer & bass players & its still the same to this this day...
Alot of listeners dont understand the amount of emotional content that is put into the drums & bass guitar as most always think its the lead guitarist, especially when he or she is doing solo's, but thats just not true & Phil Gould always served the song's he played on & added emotional content into his drum parts & as a drummer you'll know what im talking about as without any emotional content no drum or bass part sound's good unless the player has invested emotional content into it because if he or she didn't it would just sound very robotic & unfeeling...
As a drummer you'll also know that drummer's are usually held in the lower pecking order within a band & are subject to the butt of most jokes within a band yet those within the band & laughing at jokes about drummer's knew all too well & that deep down that without a great drummer in your band you'll never start off on a good foundation to build the band around & its the drums & bass guitar that are the 2 most important roles that any band needs to get right if they want to succeed...
I dont think within the music industry or those who go on to join bands will think Phil Gould isn't a brilliant drummer as its usually just listener's that dont have the gift of natural time/a great ear & inputting drums parts in any song that has emotive playing within each song as musician's sure as hell know who the greats are & who are the one's that get by on their image & what that brings, just like The Who Keith Moon as he wasnt the best technically gifted drummer but he made up for it for what he brought to the drums through his manic (at times) playing...
Ginger Baker was a true innovator & had perfect time on the drums & could also perform parts within his drumming that were very emotive & though it didnt take much for Ginger to go into one of his insane irascible tantrums Jack Bruce & Eric Clapton put up with it & any other singer or musician would put up with him because he was truly one of the best drummer's of his time & adding extra layers into what modern drummer's would go to do as standard practice but it was Ginger that came up with these ideas & ways of playing on the drums first...
A great drum cover that had emotional content played all the way through the song as it should be & personally one of Level 42's gems of a song that they rarely play now but still a classic amongst Level 42 fans & music fans alike...
In light of this still ongoing coronavirus stay safe and healthy wherever you are in this world...

THANK YOU very much for your words. Phil Gould is one of my greatest heroes for sure. I learned a lot from him just listening to the way he plays those magnificent grooves. He's definitely a musician who play drums. Yes, This song is really emotional for me, and it's maybe the main reason that drove me to the point of playing it in my own way, but really inspired to the way Phil has played it on the record. Music is my real HERO, and always will be. Thanks again... 👍🏼 👍🏼 👍🏼
@@bobbaruffaldi
Your more than welcome...
When you hear the greats like Phil/Ginger & many other's play on drums 2 things happened & that was you either became inspired or you just gave up & I was always inspired by those I listened to...
For me when i listen to Stewart Copeland's time with The Police it wasn't just what he was doing on the drums that got me hooked but how he played the high hat & used this along with his cymbals & drumming to have a very distinctive groove & feel to what he was doing but a lot of that was not just down to his talent but his manic behaviour because as much as you try you always end up giving up a piece of yourself when playing to each song & this was very evident with Stewart Copeland as he always served the song's but gave it his all without stepping on anyone's toes, well except for Sting... lol
Continue to keep playing as we somehow need to keep music alive & passing it on to each new generation...
I do my best to try & turn as many of the young one's onto music & I've played them song's from the 70s & 80s that they have never heard & more often than not they've said is that not long out & when I point out that the music they've just listened to is 30 to 40 plus years old they are stunned as its just as powerful & still stands the test of time...
I look forward to looking out for more of your drums covers & thank you again for playing Phil's contribution to that song & to all the music he worked on with Level 42...
I'm not sure if he'll be your type of drummer but another underrated drummer is Steven Jansen from Japan/JBK & many other collaborative works he went on to do...
There's just something about his drumming & how he approaches playing them that I found unique & fascinating but it's a case of Each To Their Own " & the music he laid some great beats to might not be to your liking but definitely a drummer that many wouldn't know of or heard of unless you played drums or other instruments & you had a wide eclectic taste in music as I do...
We lost Boon Gould last year along with Nearly Peart/Bill Whithers & many more musician's & singer's but because of this still ongoing coronavirus pandemic their name's were barely mentioned & its up to fellow musician's & singer's to remember & pass on their great gifts they left us...
In light of this still ongoing coronavirus stay safe and healthy wherever you are in this world...

Fantastic. Love the open handed playing. Are you actually a lefty??
Thank you, very, very much! I’m actually an ambidextrous… 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Looking at the action of your left hand I am surprised that you don't suffer from RSI. You should try to play palm down to use the natural movement of the wrist. I also play open handed.
Hi, and thanks for, your comment. It’s a deliberate choice. Actually, my grip on the left hand is really loose, no tension at all. I understand the difference, and I play palm down when I feel the need. I never suffered of anything in my life, and I always pay a lot of attention to keep everything loose, almost no grip at all, in a certain way, so I don’t get any vibration. Thanks a lot again, exchange of opinions is always good… 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
