His break in the last verse is classic Bonham. The groove master leaving his signature on every song he touched. Still the best at color and playing behind the beat.
You're not the first, nor will you be the last, to mispronounce the title of this song. The word is not WONTON (the Chinese dumpling)... it is WANTON (pronounced WANT-en), which means to do something regardless of consequence or the opinion of others. The word is used here to both describe the unorthodox methods Page used to engineer the sounds, as well as Plant's lyrics describing a frowned-upon lustful affair.
Correct. Lyrically it pertains to a dated definition of the word. "sexually unrestrained or having many casual sexual relationships (typically used of a woman)."
Wanton means being unrestrained sexually. For those of us that play guitar and music this is known as one of the most brilliant compositions of time signatures, beat and chord integrations. Brilliant and so telling of Led Zeppelin masterpieces.
When I was about 8 or 9, I thought KISS was the greatest. When I turned about 14 or 15, I started listening to Led Zeppelin. I still listen to Led Zeppelin and I own everything they ever released, and I cannot remember for the life of me the last time I listened to KISS, lol. Before KISS though I listened to Heart and that is why I appreciate real music most of my life now. I prefer metal and hard rock, but I appreciate great original music in all genres, and I owe that to Ann & Nancy who I still adore today.
KISS is a joke that doesn't deserve to be mentioned alongside great bands like Led Zeppelin and Heart. KISS was never anything more than a cynical marketing ploy to sell crap. Gene Simmons would slap the KISS logo on a pound of his own defecation and sell it if he could. He's said it himself, he's a businessman, not an artist.
LOL... i can see that happening, always thought Kiss were a total waste of time not to mention that Gene Simmons is a complete fucking dick. They had what ???...maybe two songs that made the radio and were called hits?
wonton - an oriental food: wanton - sexually unrestrained or having many casual sexual relationships (typically used of a woman): "her cheeks burned as she recalled how forward she had been, how wanton"
@@Alewifes_Husband Like wanton disregard but in the context of the song it's clearly the sexual meaning that's implied but I think Robert Plant also applies it to himself as much as anyone else if you look at the lyrics - someone who has one night stands and moves on.
Savage ..savage …savage…!! It only took me 1 listen. With LZ the lyrics come second..it’s the tone, attitude, phrasing, emphasis , delivery, …that’s what speaks.
The Bonham groove in this song is off the charts. I love playing this song on drums. This song would make for a great wrestler's theme music. Its a great tune
This is from my favorite album by Led Zepplin, Physical Graffiti. So many good songs. Sounds much different from their earlier ones. "In the Light" or "10 years gone".
A "won ton" is an Asian food item. "Wanton" can mean (of a cruel or violent action) deliberate and unprovoked for example: "sheer wanton vandalism" OR in the case of Zep's song it means sexually unrestrained or having many casual sexual relationships (typically used of a woman) for example: "her cheeks burned as she recalled how forward she had been, how wanton". For their song, I'd say a case could be made that Robert behaves just as wonton as any girl.
You know whats funny? I've been listening to this song for over 20 years and until I saw the lyrics tonight, I had no idea what the hell he was even saying for about 1/2 of the song. The funny part is...I didn't care. It was such an incredible groove that it just didn't matter. That's what music is about.
Anyone besides me ever notice the lines of coke on the mirror beside Page & Plant in the picture at 3:58? The pics are from the Met Center rehearsal in January 1975. They are visible in several of the pictures of this rehearsal in Neal Preston's book, "Led Zeppelin: Portraits." Gotta love the '70's!
Yes, one of my fave Zep songs!! Great hard rocker and lyrics to boot. 💥 *edit C’mon guys this song is straight up about f*cking. Look at the title, the lyrics, feel the vibe. They pretty much threw it out there on the table. Lolz 😂 it’s “Wanton” as in unrestrained sexual desire and activity. Not “Wonton” like Chinese food. Love your channel!
I heard a bootleg recording of a Zep concert where Plant introduced this song by saying "This is a song about a woman's body...we don't have too much experience with that".
My fave Led Zep song, best ever. Has everything in it. Great riff, the drumming, jazz chords in the pre chorus. Wanton means 'lust', not Chinese food. That's so funny
The bass guitar dreams of this are just so tightly integrated, Bonzo it's just laying down this incredibly complicated wall of Kick Drum and snare and the bass guitar is just dumping right along with it, it's really difficult but they make it really fun and danceable. People used to dance their asses off to this kind of thing. It's just so consuming. And I think it's a double meaning. It totally is like they ordered Chinese food, laugh. But there is another meaning to that word and it might be spelled slightly differently, but wanton just means this unbridled unrestrained passion and lust and energy. And I believe they encapsulate that in this song. 😀
Wanton. Sorry I had to giggle that you guys thought it was in reference to food. Love your reactions though!! You guys have got to check out Led Zeppelin's Crunge! Such a fun trip!
I don't know what part of the song you were in, so I call it the bridge, but that guitar run makes me hot, which fits perfectly with the lyrics. THIS IS ONE THAT MUST BE HEARD ON VINYL AT 11.
Good Times Bad Times - LED ZEPPELIN / Cover by Yoyoka , 8 year old Search in YT to see an 8 year old japanese girl play the drums to Zepplin! Its amazing
One of the more savage cuts - love it! Concerning 'radio time': Sadly most cuts that make the radio playlists are usually easy to follow, with simpler parts and a more 'general' design. Back in the day one could give any album a listen and be able to pick out 'those songs' which were made just to get on the air. The Wanton Song wasn't one of those. The Chinese food analogy cracks me up - time to check the Webster's Dictionary . . .
You've only just begun a trip down that rabbit hole. It's only guitar, bass, drums, keys and vocals making all those "sounds" I would have thought by now you would have had a better concept of how to follow the music. You will need half a lifetime to comprehend all of Led Zeppelin.🤟
Yes! Finally got around to it. Lex didn’t seem to like it as much as I thought she would. Listen to it again. I suggest next from Zep The Song Remains the Same; Out on the Tiles; Hats Off To Roy Harper. Zep forever!!
A lot of the songs on Physical Graffiti were about their Groupies .... look into the story about the baby shark and a girl in the room that night LMAO .... CRAZY STORY
I like Led Zeppelin as much as most people from my generation do but we can't seem to have a live stream without them or AC/DC, Black Sabbath...etc. There are SO many 100s of fantastic songs from the 60s and 70s that WERE ACTUALLY HITS but will never get played because of the format. Is there anything that can be done to allow for these songs to get played? For example, Crispian St. Peters - Pied Piper. You did a poll to see if anyone knew who he was. I do and this song is absolutely super and it was a hit. The whole idea is to hear the songs from the decade, not to 'NOT play them because nobody knows them'. I understand that it is a problem but a little planning could go a long way to digging up some real gems. So, that's my 5 cents worth. Does anyone else think this and/or have any ideas?
Festidious244 --- maybe songs from Frank Moreno and Mahogany Rush, Gamma, Mark Bolin, The Tubes, Return To Forever, Ohio players, Isley Brothers, Jeff Beck, Robin Trower, Sly and the Family Stone, etc...
This is a cute bit of hard rock pop but/and the way that John Bonham and John Paul Jones set up a time signature and then almost deliberately fall behind it and then scramble to catch up to their own work.....is the way i like to listen to rock.
Wanton is a word that has nothing to do with wontons (lol). It's archaic meaning is sexually unrestrained. Probably pops up if you read Dickens or something like that.
Bonham. Bonham. Bonham.
Good GOD. The way he hangs on to that snare on every 4/4 note is absolutely deadly.
He was unmatched!! Greatest drummer ever!

Best snare drum of all for all time.
Single pedal.......ruthless.
Sooooo in the pocket!
This is one of Bonham's best performances. How he fills the spaces is a master class in drumming.
Drums are similar on Royale Orleans
The drum sound that set the bar for rock drummers
Every time I hear this song, I can't really focus on anything but Bonhams DRUMS!!! Just fantastic, such a great feel.

I did exactly as you hooked on kiss and their cards with the gum that would shatter to led zeppelin
Haha this comment! I sometimes go back and listen to those other bands but I always come back to Zep. Home base.
I love the way Brad looks at Lex when she stops the music and starts talking. That look says, Oh Lord, what's gonna come out her mouth _THIS_ time? 😉
Your Led Zeppelin deep dives are much appreciated. Thanks Brad and Lex
wonton - an oriental food: wanton - sexually unrestrained or having many casual sexual relationships (typically used of a woman):
"her cheeks burned as she recalled how forward she had been, how wanton"
Although I've a feeling that in this song, Plant is actually referring to himself as wanton, as much as any woman.
This is a dirty …funky groove and Bonhams drumming is phenomenal .
More generally, Wanton means doing (anything) with careless disregard. Disregard of others, of consequences, of whatever.

That snare bass kick in the intro is so badass. Great song
One of the greatest rock bands of all time👍
Dictionary lists wanton as "of a cruel or violent action". That describes Bonzo's drumming on this unknown genre.
Yet another superb riff! Gotta love Zeppelin!! And those drums!
Saw Page&Plant in Vegas in 1999. They opened with this. Awesome show
I remember buying this album when I was 17 in 1975! This may be the first reaction to the Wanton song! Memories!!
This whole album is fire 🔥 from start to finish, best LZ album. I hope everything is good with the pregnancy, keep healthy. ❤
Yes Rub, I agree
No filler on this masterpiece double album by LZ. This and Exile on Main St by RS .
