We don't need a national divorce, we just need Federalism. The Federal government has a very limited job to do, protect us from foreign invaders, build postal roads, and negotiate trade deals with other nations and insure that criminals who commit capital crimes can be hunted across state lines. The rest belongs to the states or the people. If California wants to go batshit crazy, like it is, it should be able to without taking Wyoming with it.

Power does have a tendency to creep upwards until the costs of that centralization are too great. When fedgov was able to replace tariffs with lucrative sources like income tax. At that point it has the money to do domestic programs itself or at least the power to force the states to implement their preferred policies.

I disagree. I think we need to make a distinction between the small, family landlord and the massive, corporate investment entity as landlord. Small landlords are akin to family businesses, and IMO these need to be supported the same as any other small business. On the other hand, I think we need to severely reign in the “rentier” class where it’s represented by banks, hedge funds, and corporations. Check out some of economist Michael Hudson’s lectures on this topic. He doesn’t necessarily make that same distinction, but we’re going to need to if we want to get from point A to B without too much bloodshed.

The people engaged in this don't get how hard true, down to the core, humility is (many religious people don't either). Dealing with the absolute is done in absolute ways - and no other. I disagree with Croc about the importance of a degree in this labor market. I don't have one, but I have the practical skills and have never had a problem finding work. In fact, I get on average 2-3 inquiries a week on Linked-in for positions. I'd go as far as to say that with the rise of the IT economy, credentials are way less valuable than they ever have been since most of the work is practical in nature. Hell, not too long ago I hired a kid right out of highschool on the basis of the work he demonstrated on his web site over several other candidates, all of them with college degrees (one with a masters) because the highschool kid clearly knew how to do what we wanted for the job on the basis of seeing his actual work. If you guys were familiar with Ken Wilber's integral theory, you would find a powerful basis for articulating the principles that the non-Woke world could easily rally around. Key point: the evolution of the self-aware individual has a long way to go, and the tribalist tide is an inevitable reaction to this cosmic project. America, a self-aware product of the 18th century enlightenment that grasped this, used to be a polity pretty bluntly dedicated to the achievement of this project. But these things take time, and so far we ain't there yet. Therefore the policy should be centered on promoting everything that supports mature individuation and rejects everything that undermines this evolutionary trajectory.

At the present moment maybe 10% of people think this way, maybe less. It appears like many people are sold a low-resolution version of the "freedom" at the heart of Americanism. Starting with the Millennials, the prevailing cultural powers inculcated the idea of freedom and rights without the proper emphasis on personal responsibility that must accompany these things. As a result, we have an entire generation (and at this point, Gen Z would be included here) that believes they can have freedom of choice without some necessary tradeoff and without signing-off on a contract of responsibilities from the individual.

Firstly, I am following what KC is saying, and seeing what he is saying for most of this video, but when he alludes to national divorce I just can't see it. To me it seems absurd. To say "I know, let's dissolve the United States" seems to be a scorched earth solution, far worse than the actual problem. Also, along what geographical lines would the USA be partitioned?
Another question I have is, would it be possible for someone to be progressive leaning without being "woke" in this context? Is it possible for someone to believe in progressive leaning causes without being a radical constructivist? If so, what would this person look like? And would this person be welcome in the hypothetical fitness club? Asking for a friend.

The problem of national divorce is that opinions are not static and not neatly sorted into geographic areas. When they do become so, it's because they took on one of the functions of religion: heritability. That people are born into it and there are major barriers to apostasy.

  • @andrewstallard6927

The problem with the whole 'national divorce' idea is that the USA's (or the UK's) tribes do not correspond to geographical areas. Next door neighbors could be living in different 'worlds' based on their social media feeds.
I don't see any real solutions until technologies are developed to allow us to live separate lives within the same geographical area. The future is going to look like a Neal Stephenson novel. (Read Snow Crash or better yet The Diamond Age and tell me those were not prescient.)

One central problem with atheism is that as there are many competing atheisms with an ideology based on the thinking of a known person, there will be many different follower groups. Therefore, the "founder" of a line of thought becomes a guru or a prophet or whatever you want to call him/her - whether that person wants it or not. Now, is that not a religion then? I consider scientism a religion. With competing atheisms people choose their preferred group largely based on the personal charisma of the founder, because that is how people are. It is built in humanity that we are more attached to people than ideas; it is a survival feature. Only in adulthood we may develop an ability to distance from person attachment towards preferring ideas. But that is never absolute - because we often regress to earlier modes of behavior. It is deeply human to regress in times of stress. Christianity already has its prophet, Jesus Christ. It has spread all over the world and produced an enormous source of scriptures and culture. It took over 2000 years. So, see you in year 4000 or so and check up how atheism(s) are doing.;D

How sadly dangerous to be tolerant just because of a belief that everyone comes from and returns to the same god (despite the fact they will tell you directly that they don't).
Tolerance ought to come from humility and utility. Until you try something, you don't know if it's better. And you may never know if it's better FOR someone else.

I think divorce is just another addition to the ideas we already despise. Corporate media is already a horrible idea. Woke is a bad idea, divorce just adds to the bad ideas. I just think that national divorce is just another idea that should be put with the rest. It's dumb. Because, ya think it. You love it. Let's go with it, as an idea. Thus, it's another bad human made idea

    • @Sevaria

What a completely empty string of non-sense. National Divorce is not going to be "An Idea" it is going to be an objective reality peacefully or not in the medium-term future, there are no bridges for compromise anymore (there never were, the Right just always gave up stuff to the Left and gained nothing). Without any unifying Cultural norms the very idea of liberal western civilization is going to desolve.

So we shouldn't offload responsibility of these "rights" to others who aren't the beneficiaries of the rights and yet you don't dislike or disagree with the ancaps and Rand. That seems like a really strange position to be in. You can't hold this idea and have your welfare state, however small or justified you think it could be.

@@acuerdox Wherever there is something positive, there is automatically something negative. So, WITHIN atheism there will be also negative, in its essence proper, no matter how hard you try to frame it with all things positive and rule out the negative. The negative is not just negative found in comparison to things outside atheism, like in comparisons with Christianity. This applies to everything, as the mere concept of 'positive' includes the 'negative'. There really is a flip side to everything.

KingCrocoduck is one of the few commentators to address how the Science Wars of the 1990s fits into the culture wars of today and is important because the 1990s is the last time the physical sciences weighed in on the culture war's intellectual roots with any seriousness.
