Caught a 23 and a half inch smallmouth in the UP in '69, it weighed 6 lbs. 5 ounces.
Amazing! 19.5 is my big, gonna work for a 20 this season
I've never caught any bass over 4.8 my whole life fishing in southwest Ohio, eastern Indiana , northern KY. In 2 years sense moving down here to southern SC. I've caught more 4-5+6 pounders I can't count. I don't even way them anymore unless I believe there over 6lbs. My newest largemouth PB is an 11.4 Fishing is picking up down here, Its nice I can fish 12 mouths out of year comfortable down here also. Dead of winter isn't close to cold, compared to Cincy
Hell of a catch! I don't think it's going to be beat for a very long time. I live in Anderson, IN. Fish White River religiously and the best smallmouth fishing for anybody interested is in Perkensville and Strawtown. There are so many river turns and swings with deep clean water. Prarie Creek Reservoir is another place with giant aggressive smallies. My dad pulled two 4+ bronzebacks from there. Indiana has a few guys. Just remember White River had a huge fish kill in 99 and it's still trying to comeback from that. Good luck to all Indiana Smallie hunters!!!
Definitely interested!
I caught a 22 1/2" smallie that was 7lbs last year. Got it on video. It was a very thick and round football shape.
My biggest smallmouth bass was 9.4lb at Dale Hallow Lake in 2011 on shakey head with 4 inch senko. The fish was 24.74 inches
Wow!
That’s a dream trip Dale Hallow is the land of the GIANTS!
Whatever!
I sure would of never expected Monroe.
What a giant smallie at 23 inches!
I've only caught one out of the White River pushing 23 inches but it wasn't thick as that tank.
What a beauty!
Which fork of the White? Around Indy or Columbus? I am just getting into chasing smallies this is just fascinating!
@@FishinwithGRAMPS East Fork in Columbus. They are so much fun because they fight so hard.
@@BankFishingAdventures I have a video of catching a few in that creek that runs next to Atterbury. FIshing over there has fired me up to go chase them more down here in Bedford to see if I can find any.
@@FishinwithGRAMPS I need to fish around there. One lit up my ultra light this morning. They fight so hard! Easily gets addicting. Good luck buddy it seems the bite is getting better.
@@BankFishingAdventures finally picked up my new kayak, I'll be up there a bunch when it warms up for sure!
Wonder if he was using forward facing sonar?
Dunno, but I know I will be focusing on learning more about fish with it when I understand it myself.
Back in the early 1980s I worked out of Avoca State Fish Hatchery as a Biologist Aide for the summer. We spent three and a half weeks on Monroe Reservoir. We found ZERO smallmouth bass in that survey. WOW. (Ever wonder why there are wipers in Monroe Reservoir - that survey did it. Also, can anyone tell me why all the Reservoirs in Indiana became Lakes?)
Damn that's a beast smallie! I've been kayak fishing for 10yrs now. Started with a used PA12 in 2014. The in 2021 I upgraded to PA12-360. I was born & raised just north of Cincinnati Ohio. I used to fish Brookville lake a lot! I moved down to southern SC 2. & Half years ago. Fishing has been awesome! I crushed my largemouth PB first yr with a 7.98 then this past summer I broke that multiple times. My 5 biggest largemouth for 2023 was 7.4 - 8.05 - 8.6 - 9.3 - & my current PB in a 11.4 she was 26.25 inches long & 17.5 inches in girth! All my fish were released & I had a replica done of my 11.4 there's great bass, crappie & striper fishing around here. Not uncommon to catch 15-16 inch crappie. It's weird I saw more kayak angler's up in the Cincinnati area more than I do down here? I don't fish tournaments. Just love fishing, throwing big swimbaits & finding those hard to get secluded areas.
I fish some of the tournaments for fun just to meet other kayak folks. Great way to find new fishin buddies
I wouldn’t expect that either. It is an amazing catch but he released the fish so it may grow to be bigger!
Fished Monroe years ago........no Smallmouth. Anyone who lives in Indiana knows that the IDNR only stocks trout and walleye(look it up if you don't believe it). We have several lakes in NE Indiana that are prime Smallmouth habitat. However our DNR stocks them with you guessed it trout and walleye. I am a Smallmouth nut so I go to Michigan.
I’ve caught several Smallmouth Bass from Monroe Reservoir.
6 and 3/4 s on Lake Erie pre fishing for a BFL Tournament in 2001
Five pounds here in Indiana Milton
My tournament partner caught one over 4 there in the early ninety's we were cranking weed edges
Wow!! I’ve also been hearing the rumors of a new state record smallmouth! Thank you for confirming that this is true! That is a very strange lake to catch a giant smallie though!
Sure is, shocked me for sure!
The Gentleman holding the fish in all the photos is Not Rex Remington? I’ve fished Monroe for 35 years and have Never caught a Small mouth( I primarily fish For large Mouth) Caught several Spots and Large mouth

@@FishinwithGRAMPS I stand Corrected, He would pass for a twin to a guy I know.
I caught a 6.63 smallie on a 10.5 ol monster worm blackberry in color at patoka , hadn't been to Monroe in about 15 years use to party and night fish on the banks caught a 36 Lb carp and 7 lb stryper on chicken liver . I'll be going to Monroe again soon.
Wow, didn't know they got that big in Patoka!
White river in Indy has 5lbs sallies, my Buddy dig’s up crawdad’s & catches them, my biggest sally out of white river in broad ripple was about 3 to 4 pounds lol caught-’em on accident lol had a birds nest when I got the line fixed, he had swallowed my 5 inch green pumpkin senko, he was hiding next to some strong current & rocks lol
Yeah, we normally drive up north to Indy for smallies bigger than the dinks around Bedford. My brother caught a 20" below the dam at Broad Ripple and my biggest, a 19.5" came from the Wabash in Lafayette. This monster really shocked me
“Released alive.” But I’d like to know if it actually lives.
I seen it on my google search god dang congrats to that guy
Gramps, thanks for the update. No one is talking about how or what he caught it on. Live bait or lure? What lure? For me 19 on the Mahoning river in NE OH. Hoping a tube 🤣
On his FB page someone in his family said he is apparently working on signing a deal with someone. So there will be more to come.
we know I'll be dragging a tube around the lake here and there, lol
Think my biggest was a 14 inch that I caught a year before last at patoka
My biggest is 5.1lbs and I've been chasing for 6 pounders on the Wabash ever since. Who could of imagined lake Monroe would of had anything like that. 8.4lbs! Dang near impossible but it's true.
Yup, I drive 2 hrs to Lafayette to chase em and they are apparently right here 20 mins away...
@FishinWithGRAMPS yea 2 hours is a little haul but the Wabash and Tippy hold good fish. Now it looks like you can find your PB in your backyard. The only struggle now would be finding an open spot on the lake since the word got out.
@@ZacksRealAdventures heh, you ain't kidding.
I've caught them in Dale Hollow over 6 lbs that seems a little short for a 8 plus.
we were all just as shocked as anyone. But it's been verified as official by Indiana DNR. Rumor has it it was caught again around 6 weeks later and was around 7 pounds then.

That’s a big small mouth. Good stuff.
That's is a nice one
Monroe, who would have thought. What a fish, that thing would have drug us around in our yaks for a minute lol
What a tank!
What a fish!
Of course it would be on the " Dead Sea" of Indiana.....unreal, unbelievable, never would have thought Monroe!
heh, I still don't believe it's real
Man not at Monroe😲
yeah, I was SHOCKED!
Wowsa😮
Looks like a meanmouth
Heard that a couple of times from folks
In my experience,23” is not going to get you 8# of smallie.I DNR’d a smallmouth from Kent Lake in MI,it was 23” and quite thick, but weighed in at 5# 10 oz.He said it was the biggest he’d seen come out of there.Caught a 23”er on the Tippecanoe years ago,but it wasn’t as thick.Probably 5#.Two biggest smallies I have ever caught.I’ve had a couple on that I’m sure we’re IN records, hooked in the US Steel landfill impoundment behind the LMichigan wall, west of Miller Beach.Water crystal clear, had each on for a long time before I got a look at them and lost them both as they turned and tried to go back to their deep hideaway.Ive caught a lot of 20”ers in there.I’ve also seen some monsters cruising off the lake side of the wall, but the wouldn’t take anything.
dunno what to tell you, this lake giant was weighed and certified by the State
Going to be hard to beat that one.
@@babaoreally8220 everyone in this state was shocked, the few smallies that I know of caught there are mostly dinks
@@FishinwithGRAMPS Some years ago,I caught several one day, mixed with about 50 yellow bass.Lots of fun, but,as you said the smallmouth were all slightly bigger than the yellow bass.

Nop
bro everyone in comments is dumb it seems.. you dont average a weight of a fish by its length only... you can average one by its length and girth.. lol and thats pretty much basics with most fish. why? because one 23" can be super skinny and starving.. another could be 23" and super fat.. and then the best 23" is super fat filled with eggs also. now if people are saying there arent smallmouth in that area then i have no clue about that. but in california there was a very famous cheater mike long. and he had access to lakes at night which those lakes were closed at nights. and he would catch big fish and cheat in tournaments ect. he actually even took a big fish from one lake and claimed to have caught it at another lake. and he still holds a record for that fish. also castaic lake california used to not have stripers now its full of them.. it also never had smallmouth but before i moved from there we were catching smallmouths and my best from there before i moved was a little over 3lb. and supposedly they had only been illegally planted there for a couple years.
I cant believe he caught that at Monroe(I mean I believe him) worst bass fishing ive ever seen lots of big crappie though I live there I fish Monroe alot haven't caught a 5 + all year last year either ''''''''
yeah, i'm still shocked. I caught 5 pound largemouth out of there here and there, but it's been awhile.
Monroe lake.
