Good sound students! Bob Mc is one of my favorite players and always sounds great. Great experience for the band to have him as guest.

Johnny Mandel, Bill Rogers and Bob McChesney; masterful combination.
Nice performance by this band of high school over-achievers.

I have heard that he uses some kind of a Bach 7C / 11C hybrid mouthpiece. Can anyone verify this???

Such a masterful trombonist. In my opinion, like what Watrous was wont to do, his bell is too close to the mike, distorting the sound of his horn, giving it an underwater sound. Why can't these fabulous trombonists just blow out. I don't like this type of mike technique.

A blow out would be just that for this very close audience. Eardrums are important. Ted Nugent wouldn't care.

The reason trombone players play like this is so they can keep that amazing dexterity and speed over the whole horn, esp using doodle tonguing. It is tiring to keep trying to compete with bands by raising your volume. You lose quality. They have an awesome sound. You don't hear this on studio recordings.

I don't buy this explanation. With this technique, in my opinion, the horn does loses its beautiful trombone sound completely. Urbie Green just blew out, sounded like a trombone, and he could certainly get around the horn.

Some trombonists just like this sound. It's part of the range of timbres the instrument can produce. There's no one "trombone sound" when you're soloing. There's your sound. This is the sound Bob prefers for whatever reason, functional or not. I get that you don't like it though, it isn't my favourite either, but I can appreciate it.
