I'm really hoping Penistone is twinned with Scunthorpe.
We're twinned with a town in Iceland but Wombwell is on the Penistone Line.
There used to be a branch off the Penistone Line from Shepley to Clayton West that somehow survived the Beeching cuts and saw passenger services to Huddersfield into the eighties. However, with the closing of the coal mine at Clayton West the cost of maintaining the line could not be justified and it was closed. The line passed through a tunnel close to my old secondary school, Shelley High. There is now a narrow gauge line, the Kirklees Light Railway, that runs along the old route including through the tunnel which is worth a trip.
I traveled this line every workday for 7yrs in the 1980s- Brockholes to Sheffield. I recall many a snowy morning, standing on the platform in Brockholes around 6:30 AM, only for the train not to show up! Midland Station has had a make-over and I like that the trains now have usb plugs and free wi-fi, but it's nice to see the view from the carriage window hasn't really changed a lot! Thanks for the trip down memory lane. 🙂
it is a great line, I saw the first 150/0 to go through the line and was also present to see one of the first ones in passenger traffic and travelled on one the same day.
Living the dream - Sheffield to Huddersfield
Actually, after being transferred to Northern, the 150/0s were first used on the Ribble Valley line between Clitheroe and Rochdale,as I can remember seeing them at Clitheroe station (hell even riding one to Ramsgreave and Wilpshire once) from 2021 to 2022, but they now have been transferred to the Penistone line....fitting as the 144 Pacers they used on the line were 3 car units
Lovely to see this line featured; I remember the fight to save it back in the 1970s/80s. It's a lovely bit of the country. I can't believe the lack of priority given to reliability. The trains are well used, despite the roundabout route, and there appear to be hardly any bus alternatives: surely an opportunity there for one of our enterprising, innovative and - er - passenger-friendly privatised bus companies ...
I've done that line 4 or 5 times and it never fails to impress and make you realise your level of maturity. You missed that on Sundays some of them trains reverse in Sheffield and go all the way to Lincoln, my hometown, a place well worth visiting
Very interesting Dylan. We recently had a day out on the p??? from Huddersfield to Dodworth,Barnsley and Penistone and it was a TOP day out. They were trying to shut this line in the early 80's no trains on Sundays and last train on an evening about 7pm....since then, with the addition of Barnsley and Meadowhall it's been booming and long may that continue. Cheers!
cracking vid dylan haven't used it in so long I can't actually remember.I tend to just use the transpennine routes
Thanks for the ride !!! 🇺🇾
In october 2017 I travelled on that service from Huddersfield to Dodsworth and back a few days later. I wondered also about the name of a particular station....
I did this route in October 22
Train there and back was on time
The leg room was bad so had to move to a side seat and I'm short
It is a nice line and scenic route
I didn't have an issue with the name of the line, it was the pronunciation of Hallam that I was shocked by 😆
Haylum....lol...hilarious...
How to pronounce the stop after Barnsley ua-cam.com/video/74Z3K0E9taI/v-deo.html. I have known station announcements get it wrong.
@@CheekyBandit yeah, all locals know its a silent "w"
Speaking of Barnsley, A couple of years ago there was a bit of a mix up with the announcements that get played in the interchange/bus stations, and I heard "while in Barnsley Interchange" in Rotherham bus station 😆 definitely one of those "did I just hear that right" moments 🤣
Like Sheffield who have also seem to have got Manea wrong (they pronounced it "Mannier")
Didn't realize the 3 car 150s were created the same way as the 158s on the much maligned Portsmouth-Cardiff route that I used very often in the 2010s. Two car sets anywhere can create capacity issues (Nottingham-Leeds being a particular example) and many smaller stations can't cope with anything longer but we need to ensure passengers can have some comfort.
Living in Barnsley, I agree that the service is bad, you got it on a good day though. Usually there are about 7 to 8 cancellations a day. It definately needs improving, but it is scenic, which is a bonus.
I'm never sure that 2 x 3 seating actually works! People who don't know each other tend not to want to be too cosy, while few prefer to join those that do! What do others think?
I agree, I suspect that the 2+3 arrangement is to meet some DfT KPI rather than any consideration for customer satisfaction. I also suspect that, apart from maybe a one hour peak loading window, many middle seats are unoccupied - even when loads are high people seem to think these seats are for bags rather than customers 🤣. It would seem, to me , that it would be better to go with 2+2 or if 2+3 has to be retained space the seats to give more legroom.
Being from the U.S. where 2x3 seating is pretty normal for commuter and regional trains, it's always surprising to see how narrow they can be in Britain. It's no doubt because U.S. trains have a wider loading gauge, so there is a lot more room on the inside to work with, so it works a bit better here. Even then, more newer commuter trains here are going to 2x2 with double-deckers, so the issue does remain, just to a lesser degree than the UK.
It gives you more cheaper advanced singles
@@Stevenspielburger How come? Ticket prices are not bound to seating capacity. Anyway do Northern even sell advanced single tickets?
@@barrieshepherd7694 They do. Dylan travelled on advanced single. They're are now more available seats so more advances. Another example is EMR. The 3x2 seating of the "connect" services offer more cheap advance tickets than the less capacious 222's from the same station
Always strange to see a central station without any electrification, even we in Germany have done just 60 % of the net, but nothing in a bigger city is unimaginable. It’s the 21 st century remember.
Sheffield is the 4th biggest British city as well! And yet it only sees diesel trains. Even London has an non electrified terminus (Marlyborne)
You missed the best thing about Sheffield Station; the Sheffield Tap. It's genuinely palatial in the back room.
150001 and 150002 are 3 car trains which don't have the cab in the middle as they were built as 3 coach unlike the other 4 150/0s do love Brockholes Station and visited that area once but do love the name Penistone 😂 Great video.
Missed opportunity not having a line between this and Scunthorpe
Penistone , Scunthorpe… I see what you did there 😂😂😂
There is no reason ever to go to Scunthorpe.
@@WerewolfLord Well sorry the way it’s pronounced is not hilarious at all! Just if you mispronounce it
Really excellent video Dylan and in some situations your 150/0 at Huddersfield will then go over the NTP to Manchester Victoria via Standege Tunnel Marsden as an ECS move for a combined 150/2 150/0 Calder Valley Line trip if needed
At least Dylan didn’t take the mick too much out of the p stone line punctuation. It was a smooth ride down the line with the Mrs to deal with any stones 😂
Nice video!
The next time you pull in to Huddersfield you should see if you can pay Felix and Bolt a visit.
Absolutely, haven't seen them in ages
Great trip report Dylan
Thanks
"Haleham"? It's Hallam.
Surely Penistone viaduct is before the station, not after it, if you're coming from Sheffield.
How wrong you are
@@skippermyson8485 Both are entirely correct. There are other viaducts on the line, but the one just before Penistone is on the Sheffield (i.e. Dodworth, Barnsley etc.) side. That is the Penistone viaduct. You have obviously confused it with one of the others.
There should be a high-speed direct train from Penistone to Peñiscola, Spain.
This reminds me of the GWR 158 sets
I just could stop laughing at the name of the railway line😂
Nice to see my hometown station made it in your video (Barnsley or as we call it "tarn")..
Did you visit the station pubs at Sheffield or Huddersfield?
As An FYI I know a northern driver who says 150, 158 are the most common to the Penistone route although the CAFS do make an odd appearance as they are "light"
I love the tone of dis
You've been to Penistone, next stop Yorkeys Knob in Queensland :)
Nice to see your wife again! Still love the travel reports (And adore her shoes!) plus its the area I am thinking of moving to in the next few years, so good to know about the train travel!
Sheffield has a feel of the other MR stations nearby. Nottingham and Leicester and Derby (had it not been knocked down in the 80s)
The issue with Sheffield is nunnery main like junction. So restrictive
1:51 Oh no, it's one of CrossCountry's dreaded Voyagers!
Poor man's desirio lol
Looks like you had a typical English summer's day (in spring) for this trip on THAT line. I hadn't noticed the double entendre for Penistone until this video. Next time you travel on a Northern Class 150 it might be a good idea for you to pick a bay of four or isolated seat row so you don't have a dead leg at the end of the trip. Oh dear, I can see another naughty joke coming here! Tut,Tut on your speeding ticket. Hopefully no more donations to the Government coffers in future. Looking forward to your next (hopefully, sunny) trip.🙂🙂🙂
'Grow up' Mrs Dylan. LOL
Great video!
Wasn’t Penistone once part of the Woodhead route. Ooh matron…
46 mph in a temporary 40 mph limit is nothing, most people nowadays don't tend to take any notice whatsoever about speed limits...
Still, it's good that you're driving as well - I decided not to until I actually need to start driving, due to high insurance prices.
Crash bang clatter
Crash bang clatter
Crash bang clatter
Crash bang clatter
Ladies and gentlemen, we are now approaching Meadowhall interchange. Meadowhall interchange station next stop.
Crash bang clatter

SCREEEEEEEEEECH!!!
❤
That old Top Gear bit with the fake sponsor on a race car ‘Penistone Oils” but when they opened the door only the first part of the first word was visible.
It's important when you choose a name for a line that it is descriptive. It'd be wrong to cock it up ;)
Oh, very droll! I hadn't noticed the double-entendre until these comments.
@@michaelformaini7053 you're welcome
No mention of the award winning real ale pub 😢
I pity anyone doing this commute on a daily basis. Until the 1980s the line took the much shorter former Great Central Railway route. The track was singled in 1989, meaning no direct trains and only a couple of passing loops. It's pretty enough on a nice day, but 1hr 16mins is madness for an essential bit of northern railway infrastructure. They need to double track it, asap, it was quicker in Victorian times.
150's are underrated
Exelnt report, tight to say the lease about seating.
That's a funny line 😂😂😂
I looking forward to this Dylan 👍 could you possibly do ScotRail Helensburgh Central to Edinburgh Waverley review? Thanks
Maybe next time I'm up that way 😁
@@DylansTravelReports 😃
I drive that regularly
last time i was on this train after a few beers I asked a lad "does this toilet have a train"?
This looks very familiar my hometown
Barnsley also glass production my home town
Sheffield; there was a great, classic *EOTWAWKI movie that came out in 1984, that took place in Sheffield, "Threads" was the name. Either it was the grainy quality of the film, or maybe it was really that dark and dreary in those days, but the Sheffield in your video looked bright and shiny by comparison.
* End of the world as we know it.
Northern Class 150
It was a much better, quicker service when it ran up the former Great Central and L&Y route although I suppose by running via Barnsley there is probably passenger use.
We managed to get rid of the *hateful* Pacer trains, so can we please ditch Sprinters too? Yorkshire deserves better than this. On the plus side, great video as always and Mrs Travelreports is absolutely correct to snigger at "Penistone".
I miss the nodding donkeys a little lol
Sprinters likely to be around until the mid 2030s
Nice video and review. Only one thing that made me cringe was your pronunciation of Hallam. Other than that it was really good to see the beautiful Yorkshire countryside even on a gloomy day.
Thanks!
What did Stocksmoor & Honley do wrong ?
Enjoyed the video and I’m not commenting on the name of the rail line 😂
Ho ho ho ho ho.
Impossible to stick to time on that line , single lines and a lot of station stops , old slow traction and often changeable track conditions.
Penistone, where you could change for an electric train to Manchester..........
..Or London. In fact there used to be named trains from Bradford to London on the Penistone line.
Not heard someone pronounce Hallam as Haylum before 😂
My son (a graduate of the University of Sheffield) informs me that the correct pronunciation of "Hallam" is "Sheffield Poly" 😆😆
@@jamesrichardson476 Was about to say that - another make believe University from a Polytechnic. (I can say that as I attended it when it was the Poly )
Of these hybrids, 005 has two toilets and 003/004/006 only have one.
yep because 150212,209 had a nasty crash when they was new and the toilet carriages had to be scrapped
Yeah, I thought there must have been one with two toilets kicking around somewhere
@@DylansTravelReports there's big storys when 150209 was with GWR like a 153 coupled with 150209 unit was called 153399 hybrid unit
Sheffield to Huddersfield, on what pretty much equates to a Bus!
2023 and they STILL have awful trains like that!!
So after you joined the bottom of the Penistone line you basically went up the shaft?
4:32 THAT'S A REAL NAME??? lol
How about doing a video from the world's oldest mainline terminal station?
Great video, but no way you pronounced Hallam as hale-em. It's pronounced hal(as in Halifax)-am
What happened to Shepley?!
Where is Sheffield Haylem University. It's a Yorkshire name, so its pronounced as its spelt... Hal...lam!
It could've been worse, it could've went to Cockermouth.
Or Clitheroe.
I wonder what there logo is like 😂
Funnily enough, not what you think 😂
It's hallam university , not haylam university.
08:52 is that ur wife bro bless 🥹
Local here! It's Hal-am not Hall-am
how many journeys do you plan but then you get there and your train is cancelled
Surprisingly, not all that many
Absolutely butchered the pronunciation of "Hallam" 😂😂😂
How do you find these cheaper prices??
Book in advance
Network Rail should still electrify the existing lines in West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and North Yorkshire so that electric and Bi-Mode trains can still operate on. And to electrify the East Lancashire Line to Burnley, Rochdale and Blackburn.
Love the video, but given the name of the line, I can’t get myself to push Like, as the video currently stands at 69. Peak maturity 😶
😂
Spare unit....these jokes write themselves
It’s Hallam not hellam
My god that’s the worst leg room I’ve seen on a train! I was surprised to see a toilet in what looks like an old commuter train. Even with the weather the scenery looks nice.. once again the pice is astonishing nowhere in Aberdeenshire, Moray or Highlands do you find prices as low as that
Dirty mind activated
You’ve got the format down well. More exotic trips are more interesting though?
Hopefully 🤞
the joke about the line's name is likely to be lost to those for whom English is a second language! Having 3 across seating is no fun, especially for the lucky person in the middle, made worse as there are no armrests.
Yeah I think that all standard class accommodation should be 2+2, not 2+3...
Is the Sheffield-Huddersfield route the most scenic train route in Yorkshire?
8:33 careful of how you pronounce that one 😂
Did tha mean Sheffield Midland Station?
Sorry Phil it's not been called that for years!
@@graham76man It was Sheffield Midland the last time I used it to get to Bristol :). I also used to use Victoria to get to East Anglia.
Great video, but you really do need to get out of the habit of pressing your hand on the (piss stained) upholstery. Emley Moor tower - not a mast.
It's also HAllAM not HAILAM
there was a peeking Tom watching you in washroom ! ? 7:09
Dylan, do you do any work or just ride on trains?
UA-cam is my work 🙂
Halam is not pronounced like that.
It is “Hal-am” Hal not Hay.
Great trip. What an unique rail line, I'm bit curious about that spelling or pronunciations the rail line.
Pen is tone as in Pennines
I'm from local area
it looks wrong with a 3 car unit
Boa tarde Dylan lindo trem bom
A lovely though hilariously indirect route. The 150s on the other hand... I'd honestly rather have a pair of Pacers!
It used to be a more direct route. The Sheffield to Penistone section ran along a part of the old Woodhead Transpennine line. Only when that line was closed did the Huddersfield to Sheffield service run via Barnsley.
