  • L'Arc-en-Ciel is one of the biggest Japanese bands ever, so Allison Hagendorf sat down with them to find out about their music and what it's like to be the first Japanese band to play Madison Square Garden.

Actually they started out as a visual kei band, with Hiro, Pero, Tetsu-chan, and Hyde-sama. And then they kind of grew from that. They still kind of are, considering the outfits. But their music is very different from a visual kei bands music.
L'arc-en-Ciel is truly an amazing band, and I would love to meet them some day! If I had totally known about them, I would have begged my mom, til she took me, or somethin like that. They're an inspiration to me, and their music is so much better than ours.

Colleen DiPuccio mm debateable... tetsu has said before that he hates the label "visual kei" and doesn't like the idea behind visual kei bands. tbh i feel like in the early days they just attempted (very poorly and ...half assedly tbh) to be "visual" out of obligation. i think when they got really big and mainstream, they then went kind of the opposite direction to establish themselves and especially*not visual*. nowadays, they're well known and have established their longevity and name well enough that they can dress however they want. and tetsu and hyde especially seem to like fashion. ken likes to dress snazzy. people can call them "visual kei" if they want but imo its kind of reaching.

Colleen DiPuccio Visual kei is too cookie cutter label these days. No substance and no song writing, most of visual kei bands don't have anything strong enough to stand out and they disappear quickly. Japanese girls are just watching a different face and same visual kei style and appearance.

+Vision33r yeah there are not much good V-Kei bands out there anymore. NIGHTMARE, the GazettE and Alice Nine are the names that come out of my head. They're not only looks, they're music is so legit. the GazettE just came out with a new album last month, DOGMA.
