  • After thoroughly cleaning these Avenue Pad6 controllers, I install new cords, and upgrade them with aftermarket membranes which make them feel way better and more precise / responsive.
You could easily swap a PC Engine cord for a Turbografx cord as well to make a PCE controller compatible with a TG16 or vice versa.

I just got an Avenue 6 Pad today from Japan and the very first thing I noticed was the stiffass d-pad. I looked around on Reddit and saw quite a few suggestions for the mortoff replacements so that's what I just bought.
Then I found this video, so I'm fairly confident in my purchase, hopefully they live up to the high praise.
Overall I really like the controller but I know this d-pad will drive me bonkers if I don't switch it out.
EDIT: Oh yeah, I also have that exact same extension cable from Amazon lol. It works perfect.

I'm pretty happy with the mortoff membranes. They don't make the d-pad perfect but they feel a lot better than the stock and other aftermarket membranes.
I spent way too much time trying to get some 2 player 6 button street fighter 2 action going on.
No matter what I try one of the controllers goes crazy and the inputs do things they aren't supposed to do.
I've cleaned the contacts, deoxidized the contacts, replaced cords, checked all traces and solder points, checked capacitors, bought a different multi tap, checked continuity on cables, tried them on my TurboGrafx, core grafx, and supergrafx...... I get no 2 player 6 button love.
Starting to think one of them is faulty but they work fine by themselves or in 2 button mode.
I ended up buying an avenue 3 but haven't used it much yet.

Thats a shame. Not sure if you mentioned it already in your comment but did you keep or throw away the old controller wires that came with the controllers?
I was thinking maybe its been the replacement cables from console5 that are missing something.
I’m able to get the both controllers to work on a multi tap with no issues as far as I tested.
But I am running the game on an unmodified Core Grafx II with a Turbo Everdrive.

@@ThatOldSchoolMagic I do have the originals but they behaved the same way, even tried another console 5 replacement cord. What really blows my mind is I get the same exact weird input behavior when trying 2 players on mister fpga with 8bitdo m30 pads.
I recently learned though that they should work because it isnt lack of input channels because the game itself dictates the extra inputs by double pulsing the extra input signals to decipher the extra buttons. Too complicated for me to fully comprehend or explain but yeah, it should work so idk why I have so many problems

@@LameGamingRecently I discovered Polymega Released a 6button Pad for the TG-16/PCE. From what the review stated it wasn’t too bad but one of the commenters mentioned that their only issue is when pressing the D-pad down at the center begins to register all directional buttons. When thats done the character on screen doesn’t move because it cancels everything out.
Hopefully better options come over time but it might not be too bad to see if its the controllers or not.
I don’t blame you if you don’t do it though since you already pour a lot of time and effort into figuring the issue out with what you already have.

I managed to snag a nearly perfect, opened but unused Avenue pad 6 on eBay for $50 shipped. No maintenance for the win. I personally like the dpad. I prefer it over the original pc engine controller with a NES dpad silicone replacement.

Thats a good deal! Maybe when new the d-pads perform better .... The ones I got were well used and seemed like the d-pad membranes had collapsed some, just barely placing the weight of your thumb on them would trigger movement. Combo movements were very hard to pull off.
I didnt try the clear silicone type nes replacement membranes. Maybe I should of but didnt like them in the nes controllers, these ones I use in the video had a more rubber makeup than plastic or silicone and worked out pretty good.
Maybe ill find a hori fighting commander one day thats not $100... Id like to compare them.

I had two of these controllers as a kid and I was playing this game with friends when they would come over, over the years I would trade systems in to get newer ones and when this game felt super slow because of no turbo speed settings I just couldn’t play it anymore. However I regret that I sold this unique option for champion edition 💫🏆

Sadly 2 six button pads cant be used together, I tried on 2 taps, and 3 different systems, even sf2 on mister with new m30 six button pads does the same weird behavior. Not enough input channels on the system Im assuming....sucks

Pretty sure you can completely remove those pins and reinsert them. I got a junk original no -turbo control pad with what looked like an Avenue Pad cord, complete with a useless strain relief sitting an inch out of the controller. ;) Sure enough, I was pulling the short pins out a bit and they ended up coming out all the way. Same thing with my junk 5 player multi tap. Both continued working perfectly after pins were reinserted.

How about somebody make an usb adapter so you can use cheap NES usb controllers on pc engine and Turbografx 16 similar to Brook Super Converter.

Sadly Mortoff games sold out of these membranes and never seemed to get any more. The replacement cord is from console5 but they are often out of stock as well, they seem to order a new batch maybe once a year so you have to keep an eye on them or email them and ask when they will be restocked. Console5 should have nes membranes as well but they probably are not the rubber oem style ones that mortoffgames had.... I dont know where you could find these now unfortunately as all the replacement membranes ive seen are the thin clear mushier ones.

Nice video, can you perhaps give me a link to the membrane and the rep cement cords as I Can't see the membranes on the mortoff site.

Sadly it looks like they nolonger have them in stock, I wonder if they could get you in touch of their supplier if you ask by email. Or maybe they can help you find another seller, the rubber membranes they used to carry were the only ones ive found that were like oem.
