Lyrics:
Now I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do ya?
It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing "Hallelujah"
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Your faith was strong, but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew ya
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well, really, what's it to ya?
There's a blaze of light in every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool ya
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the lord of song
With nothing on my tongue but hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah

Cohen often said that songwriting is a difficult process for him. The only song The Future, he said, has been rewritten dozens of times. In an interview, Cohen told the following story:
A few years ago, Bob Dylan and I drank coffee in Paris. At that time, he performed the song Hallelujah at his concerts and asked me how long it took to write it. I said: "Two years, almost entirely." He was shocked. Then we started talking about his song I And I and I asked: “How much time did you spend writing it?” He said: “Almost 15 minutes”. I almost fell off the chair. And the funny thing is that I lied. In fact, the Hallelujah took almost 5 years. Of course, and he lied. It probably took him about ten minutes.
A very nice story, thanks.
What a great story! Thank you for sharing that!
I can't remember any of Bob's songs.
The melodies are hardly catchy, except something about "shelter from the storm".
Still even if less "researched" than Cohen he wrote some excellent timeless songs, blowing in the wind is one that means something different to me every year even if it may have taken him 5 hours
Most catchy songs (or at least the bulk of their melodies) are made pretty quickly.
So many people like the covers better, and don't get me wrong, the covers are beautiful, but for some reason, I just feel this song more when I'm listening to the original. Cohen's voice... it just fits the raw emotion to this song. It's not dressed up, it's not over-dramatic, its real. I can't describe it any other way. It's just so beautiful, really.

Leonard Cohen you are that secret chord that pleased the Lord.
Brown Mamba chord
Brown Mamba Leonard Cohen was an atheist.
no he is a jew
Indeed he was and he said on several occasions that he was quite content with his religion.
"And every breath we drew was hallelujah." Leonard Cohen explained: "Hallelujah is a Hebrew word which means 'Glory to the Lord.' The song explains that many kinds of Hallelujahs do exist.
Anyone here just because it's a damn good song?
Me, been listening to this song since before snyder or shrek used it lol

@@misspoint_2501I've heard that when he sang it live he would switch up some of the lyrics. No idea if it's true, but that may have something to do with it.
The chorus in Cohen's version is amazing.
❤❤🔥
The chorus in this version was not made of professional singers, to make it sound more like people singing along, and not a polished choir. It was made of the band members, the producer, the producer's ex-wife, and a few others. It fits this version perfectly, I think.
Well it’s the original not a version.
@@aprammus9580 true
His version?
Back when I was in high-school I was part of the school-choir. I was one of three guys in a choir consisting at times of up to 40 girls.
For one event we prepared Hallelujah and somehow I was chosen to sing the last verse. For rehearsals we always had a 'female-version' and I only knew the version from, if I'm not mistaken, Jeff Buckley. The concert came, the girls beautifully sang their solos and I too hummed/growled my verse. We left the stage, as I saw an elderly man who followed me with his shining eyes, we passed the rows of chairs and he slightly lifted his arm as if to reach for my hands. I stopped and he simply put his hands around mine and thanked me. I was so shocked that I did not reply anything. I compared myself to the angelic voices of the girls and could not comprehend how/why he was so moved by my part. Is was accosted multiple times that evening, mostly by elderly people; so I mentioned it to my parents. And my mom told me that it might be because I kinda sound like Leonard Cohen when I sing. I looked his version up when I we got home and yeah... I surely don't want to compare me with Leonard Cohen... laughable :D but whenever I hear this version; especially the last verse, I think of that old man's shining eyes and am quietly so very proud that my voice could re-ignite a very old and deep emotion in that man; whatever it was...

Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is a song full of depth and ambiguity. With poetic metaphors, it explores the complexity of love and being human.
It explores the highs and lows of interpersonal relationships. Romance and passion go hand in hand with disappointment and loss. Spiritual and biblical motifs reflect the search for meaning and transcendence.
"Hallelujah" is an ode to the contradictory nature of our feelings - joy and pain, ecstasy and doubt. Cohen looks compassionately at our longings and our vulnerability.
The song is an appeal to embrace life in all its facets. He invites us to face the darkness and yet sing of the light. From loss can come gratitude, from doubt can be born faith.
The timeless resonance of "Hallelujah" lies in this multi-layered message. Every person can find something of their own in it, draw comfort and hope. A moving hymn to the beauty and pain of being human.
tl; dr
Amen!

@Costa Zambaras Or, you know, some people just prefer the original over the cover because it's perfectly fine to have opinions and you don't have to gate keep just because you're self conscious about your own taste. If you like the Buckley version better, good on you, it's very good. I like it too, but I prefer the original for just as legitimate reasons. That doesn't make me or anyone else with that opinion "edgy" or "non conformist"

Look up 'girl sings hallelujah into a well' its a wonderful rendition.
Am I the only one who likes Cohen's original version more than any cover? In my opinion, Cohen sings it so naturally and his voice is really soothing.
I like it better too Geoff. He is the original. He is the poet, the writer, the man with the passion to have came up with the song. the other version is actauly quite good but this man was the man. He also wrote at least a dozen other songs that most people have no idea that he wrote, one example. so long mary anne. this is special to my family. My father began to listen to Leoanard cohen around 2004 or 2005 when he was around 60, he sadly passed away only 4 years later in 2009 suddenly at the age of 64 and a half of cardiac arrest. one of our good family friends in florida who's son got marred late that year, well the couple actually chose them to play this very song (well on the church piano/organ since all songs were played on it) but they did this specially for my mom because my dad loved loenard cohen. and than he came to Detroit as well a year later, and I took my mom to see him live in honor of our father.
He is the one and only !

Dang, this original version is not just some love song like all the covers, but a comment on how vain life feels. No matter what you do, life feels like it's full of mistakes and pitfalls. Your actions can be of the purest of meaning, but things just don't always pan out as you wish. We can all hope that things are better at the end. We can only say Hallelujah.
Wow- So well said! A profound observation.
This exactly, brother. There is a lot of deep meaning in this song, and you nailed it.

Yes, I had to search for the original version who wrote it who first recorded it and the lyrics I don’t understand how the lyrics got changed throughout the years with people covering this song and making it not pure anymore. I was so confused when I heard this for the first time I didn’t know if it was supposed to be Like a love song pertaining to intimacy but now I’ve heard the original version. I think all covers of any song should be done with original lyrics of a song. This song is amazing.

I read that this was the favorite song of Zack Snyder's daughter, Autumn. Puts this in a whole new context.

Avery Huelsbeck Cohen's lyrical poetry and his view that "many different hallelujahs exist" is reflected in wide-ranging covers with very different intents or tones, allowing the song to be "melancholic, fragile, uplifting joyous" depending on the performer.

You know that this song has almost nothing to do with religion don’t you? Cohen was a master of using biblical allusions to bring gravitas to his songs, which were usually about love and sex and betrayal. It’s hilarious to me that children’s choirs sing shmaltzy version of this at Christmas. But everyone makes of it what they will I guess.
This song was played at my brother's funeral today. Needless to say, it was the one song were everyone broke down. Beautiful song.

It's not really a religious song. Just has religious references.
@@psychedeliac Its a very Jewish song. Defining that as “religious” or not depends on a distinction that does not exist in Judaism. To me this is about experiencing God’s presence, shekinah, in the act of sex, which is a theme that goes back to Solomon and the Song of Songs, and offering praise to the Sovereign of the Universe for that experience of love and joy even when it comes with pain.

I’m an atheist but I have always thought of this as one of the most beautiful modern songs, and one of my favorites to listen to
Also my favorite progression to improvise to, it always brings some emotion out
As another Atheist (named Alex) Cohen talked about the song as his "desire to affirm [his] faith in life, not in some formal religious way, but with enthusiasm and emotion"
Faith in a God or Gods is not a prerequisite for having some kind of faith, and religious or not I think Leonard sings from the heart about a broad love and devotion towards existence itself, and as an Atheist who believes this existence, both holy and broken in its own way, is all we have. I kno0w this reply is at least a year late but I hope you have a great day, maybe now accompanied by some Cohen.
My dog recently passed and this song makes me have mixed emotions because it brings me joy that one day I’ll meet him again and I’ll get through this but also I’m grieving so this makes me miss him. RIP Atlas

Our individuality continues beyond physicality, unless willingly relinquished. That's why humans are a bit more conscious. Animals are literally all the same spirit. They gain personality durring their lifetime however.
If you were to adopt another companion, they would be Atlas. Just an iteration that's never met you in their lifetime and has the privilege of getting to again. Save your sorry for those that arent as lucky, dearest kin
I can hear and understand the words in this version. I think since he wrote it he sang it best and knew how to get his message across.
Rip Johnny Cash
Rip Leonard Cohen
Rip Marty Robbins
Rip Elvis
If it's any consolation all four of their legacies live on.

Cette merveilleuse belle chanson me fait pleurer à chaud de larmes
Yea, what he said ^
You're blessed bro 😍
"And even though it all went wrong, I'll stand before the Lord of Songs with nothing on my tongue but hallelujah" brought me here
This original song was playing when my baby boy entered this world - love.
osef
the song is actually about SEX, physically fucking and losing one's faith in God ; it is NOT a religious hymn ; the lyrics talk for example about a man giving a cunnilingus and moving his dick inside a woman ; so yea, makes sense
This is the best version I have ever heard.
The man wrote the song so I guess he should know how it should be sung. ❤❤
My dad passed away yesterday and now I'm making a playlist with all the songs he loved and I remember him by. This is one of them. Thank you dad for showing me the greatest artists of all times. Loved, missed and never forgotten 🤘🔥❤
I lost mine in 2007. Sorry for your loss. 😢
I am so sorry for your loss. This song will do your list more than justice. Stay strong. . .❤
May his soul rest in peace 😢
Leonard Cohen is a great songwriter/poet. This song (in his voice) has a haunting quality about it the draws us in to it's emotion. There have been MANY versions of this song, another really great Canadian (Yes, Cohen was CANADIAN) who did a great version, was K.D. Lang.....She has the voice and does emote, but it doesn't have the same haunting quality that Mr. Cohen's original version does. He really is a lyrical genius....
+Christine Larocque : Je suis tout à fait d'accord. You could not have said it better.
Damn straight! Very few songs give me that real physical sense of emotion right in my gut like this one does. If you haven't heard the Jeff Buckley version, you should check it out. The yearning you hear in his guitar playing is outstanding.
+Christine I Larocque
Yes, i agree. This version is haunting and super and i like the KD lang version also.
You want hauntingly beautiful Cohen? I invite you to partake in "Dance Me to the End of Love" and let yourself bathe in the story of love as only Leonard Cohen can deliver. Kisses, Michele
Michele Fox yessss.... I've heard both and just love.
The world has lost a true lyrical legend. Thankfully we will always have his music to remind us
Possibly the best song ever written. (including the added verses)
No cover seems to be able to conveys the sort of jaded, tongue in cheek element which the entire meaning of the song revolves around. I think singers just like that it sounds like a timeless hymn but isn't inherently religious. You can't beat Cohen's delivery.
“I don't care how many demons he's fought in how many hells. He's never fought us. Not us united,”
what's that a quote from?

"I did my best. It wasn't much. I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch. I've told the truth. I didn't come to fool you." was my 2019 in a single verse.

most beautiful song ever
Enough of this trailer comment.
Cann't we just say that this song is one of the best song we've ever heard?
I love this song
these are christian people so dont expect a thing from them ....they are thankless
I'm Muslim , yet I think this song is amazing ......
Might be my favourite song of All-time
This version of the song too.
@@loyallall wtf r u on about?? How high r u?
I prefer this version the most, because I feel his voice contains so much emotion. To each his/her own, but this is my favourite.
I think Jeff's has more emotion.
No, hes quite monotone
More emotion that Jeff Buckley’s? Really?
Kd lange is very good
No cover compares to the original, none of them have the power that this version has.
This song is from a couple of generations before mine, but music is timeless and this one has a lot of heart too. ❤️
This is the best version. It sneers, it cuts, it’s raw and brutal and exactly what the lyrics demand.
There’s nothing pretty or soaring here; it’s mean and petty and vicious.
Yeah. Exactly. It's a very cynical and raw song.
I found it bittersweet and even soaring; turns pain into something better.
I think some other versions do justice enough, but I feel like the point is missed when gorgeous people with beautiful voices blast it out of the water, flexing their chops, making a grand and spectacular show of it.
The song isn’t itself unless it’s broken, and that’s what makes it so tragic. There’s something so beautiful about it, and it’s trying its damned best to bring it out. But if it’s ever achieved, the song is lost.
Meh.... not quite as iconic or as piercing and emotive as Jeff Buckley's version.
@@TheAbabab77errrr wrong.
This song is going to play during the end credits as a tribute to Autumn snyder in Zack Snyder's Justice League.
Happy birthday Zack! #Hallelujah

this is quite possibly one of the greatest songs of all time... immortalised by hundreds of brilliant versions
It reflects the struggle Man has with it's relationship with Love, God,each other and individual identity and the meaning and purpose of life. Artfully and soulfully done.
This song is absolutely incredible. One of the greatest songs ever written.
This even touches my heathen heart!!!
This song is so known for its complex vocal progression, but the man who wrote it stayed pretty simple. And it’s hauntingly beautiful.
My 16 year old dog died today.
I guess eventually the pain will go away but right now I wanna scream
I still miss mine from 1966: a harmless creature deserving more happiness in her 17 years.
🙏💝
I lost a right tosser of a good boy five years ago. What have I done? I've gone and got myself another one. A girl this time, and she's a real sweetheart. Thinking about losing her nearly breaks my soul, so I have to keep that pushed back or lose my mind. Dogs are wonderful creatures. They deserve so much more happiness than we can ever give them, but what we give them is always enough for them. We don't deserve dogs, but we have them and we do the best we can.
@@dragonwithamonocle I just got another dog after 2 years. She's boxer and Boston terrier. Love her so much. As I loved my other dogs and horses and one cat. We love them with our hearts, then they break our hearts .
C'est merveilleux comment ne pas écouter chaque jour et faire connaitre cette merveille
MERVEILLEUX C'est a pleurer !
You and your songs will remain unforgettable. May you rest in peace.
Lyrical genius 💜👌
It is useless arguing over which version is better. They all are the best of a vast array of good singers. This song is by far one of the best compositions of all times. The proof is in the number of artists recording it. We each have our favorite. Thank you Mr. Cohen.
One of the greatest songs of all time. Especially in the version from Cohen, which I personally prefer over the other versions.
Same.
Biased, because I'm a huge Cohen fan, but still consider this the best version (including the choice of verses). Jennifer Warnes' backing vocals give me chills, too.

How many versions are there?
I think lots of young people become enamored with the Buckley version of this song, and he did it justice. I was also, when I was a little younger. But hearing this version at a certain age...it's a bit like finally feeling true love after playing at it for most of your life.
Yes
It’s finally hitting at 31.
