What would you do? Last week our video was about us struggling to get paid by boat owners and now we are faced with our truck mechanic not wanting to bill us for our big green truck. We need to pay our mechanic WHEN and IF he gives us a bill. It's an unfortunate situation since our mechanic is feeling really lousy about not being able to repair our truck it doesn't help if its an intermittent problem. Like anything its all in how you respond and we have been nothing but kind to him ... we have no idea what parts he's used. We have not paid him anything and we have asked numerous times for a bill. We want him to feel empowered and not drag his tail when he sees us. 🤔

Check out Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics. If your problem is intermittent electrical, there is no one on the planet better equipped to figure it out. He has a UA-cam channel, so he would probably jump at the chance to work on your car as a cross channel promotion. I can't tell you how many "parts cannon" failed repairs he has figured out.

The time to tell the customer you can’t fix it is after you diagnose it and can’t find the problem, if you start guessing and swapping parts that’s on you as a mechanic. No customer should have to pay for your guesses.

Yup we understand that and so does the mechanic. He hasn’t given up yet since we’ve been so good to him this far. Still no bill.

Pay for parts and labor at a discount. It 's not fair for a mechanic to play parts darts and charge you full price for parts that were never needed, and again it looks like his labor was a guessing game, sometimes you win sometimes you lose

Ah it’s not that easy since he’s been our mechanic for 12 years and some of the OEM parts had/have a recall on them. It’s a small place where we live and we need to figure out what’s far.

There is a difference between part swappers and technicians. Diesels are especially important to diagnose properly. You can easily find yourself throwing lots of $$ just throwing parts at a problem when the root isn’t found. If you aren’t testing, you are guessing.

If you run across a mechanic that has been doing it for years and says he hasn't been defeated by a head scratcher ....run away fast. He is a liar. I have had a few that the next guy coming behind me found the issue and fixed it and I have done that behind others several times. Sometimes it just takes a fresh view...you just get zoned in on one possibility and can't see it being something unrelated to your diagnosis that could be responsible. Fresh Horses !

I have had mechanics and the like tell me a few times they can't fix something, or once "its not worth it" and on those occasions they all said, no charge, but I insist on giving them at least 2 hours of their going labor rate. I know some places factor that in their overhead, but I would rather build some trust.

Just for the heck of it, I'd like to throw this idea out there....
If it happens to be stalling occasionally, try replacing the gas cap. You might be getting an occassional vapor lock (if that's a proper term) because the fuel cap will no longer seal properly.
Not a mechanic, but had this problem on 2 p/u trucks. First time drove me crazy. Was prepared for it on the other truck.
It's a very simple solution to an otherwise often overlooked and not considered cause to a problem.

Mechanics have become "Remove and Replace" technicians that all too often will guess what the problem is and then replace a component. When that doesn't fix it they replace another component, so on and so on. Unless you are willing to buy the expensive diagnostic computers 3K and up you will struggle to diagnose many automotive problems.

    2. I (personally) believe that on long term jobs (over say 2 weeks) the shop/customer need to be having emailed communication and parts and labor should be paid up as it goes. Also major parts prepaid.
    3. Intermittent diagnostics are a special case. Customers and the shop doing the need to agree to an initial diagnosis time limit/ dollar amount before starting work. Much of the diagnosis is determined by the information provided by the customer.
(had a mini excavator running out of hydraulic power, brought into the shop under warranty, customer did not clean it, would not pay to clean, warranty was not going to!!, eventually service manager authorized time to steam the machine, 3 hours later, found the customer had shoved a melon sized rock into the suction hose. You need a different mechanic and someone that can use a scope and not throwing parts at a vehicle and potentially put bad aftermarket parts on if not using factory. I have seen many wiring issues and electrical problems on these older trucks. It should be something a mechanic can drive if having enough time driving home or away from shop when on personal time while monitoring scan data and scope data for any glitches or issues that are not common.

I didn’t charge him for labor since it was my time as the owner of my company but also I was like if I can’t figure it out and I don’t feel right charging it’s a loss on the company but I much rather you be happy and not pissed for paying me to not figure it out.
