The Confrontation of the Soga Brothers EXPLAINED・Kotobuki Soga no Taimen (1697)

Kotobuki Soga no Taimen is the final form of the famous taimen or "encounter" scene between the Soga brothers and Kudō Suketsune, written during the Meiji period by Kawatake Mokuami, but closely based on the many similar scenes created for New Year productions during the Edo period.

I recognized Kataoka Nizaemon XV! I did wonder if Goro was Ichikawa Ebizo XI, but since I noticed Nakamura Shichinosuke, I thought perhaps it was Nakamura Kankuro who played Goro instead. I didn't know Ichikawa Ebizo XI had been on stage with Kataoka Nizaemon XV before.

Giro was Ebizo, and it is one of my favourite characters played by Ebizo. You can even see his tears in the scene where Goro had to drink the wine reluctantly.

They are Ichikawa Ebizō XI (Soga no Gorō), Onoe Kikunosuke V (Soga no Jūrō) and Kataoka Nizaemon XV (Kudō Suketsune).
