Chikamatsu's First Domestic Masterpiece EXPLAINED・Sonezaki Shinjū (1719)

Sonezaki Shinjū ("The Lover's Suicide at Sonezaki") was written by the legendary playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon (1653 - 1725) for the bunraku puppet theatre in 1703. It was his first domestic drama, and therefore his first play about lover's suicide or shinjū.
I hope to cover many more plays by Chikamatsu in the coming months, including some of his few other domestic dramas still performed regularly (Shinjū Ten no Amijima, Kezori, Abura no Jigoku...) as well as his famous historical plays. Let me know if you have any preference!
