My top 10 favorite DC comics of the 90s 1. The Flash by Mark Waid 2. Batman Knighfall 3. The Death & Return Of Superman 4. Kingdom Come 5. Batman Gotham By Gaslight 6. Superman Red Son 7. Batman The Long Halloween 8. Aquaman by Peter David 9. Nightwing by Chuck Dixon 10. Batman No Man's Land
I was heavy into comics in the 90s and I didn't read or know about hardly any of these. I was mainly marvel then but now I've been obsessed with DC and Batman the past few years
The 90s was the decade I grew up in, but at that time, I wasn't into comics. So I'm glad all the key 90s arcs have gotten republished as graphic novels. Like Knightfall, the Death And Return Of Superman, Green Lantern: Emerald Twilight and New Dawn, Zero Hour: Crisis In Time, and Final Night. At that time, DC's sales were suffering, so they decided to replace their Silver Age characters with all new ones (Wally West, Connor Hawke, Kyle Rayner). They even gave Hal Jordan grey hair to age him, which was retconned in Green Lantern: Rebirth to have that be the first sign of Parallax's influence on him.
Yeah, they did a lot of crazy things in the 90's! Killed Superman and Green Arrow, broke Batman's back, turned Green Lantern into a villain, replaced Wonder Woman, chopped off Aquaman's hand, they turned the Atom into a teenager, and Hawkman... wow, what they did to him is still being felt today! What a time :)
The 90s get a bad rap because most people were Marvel guys or were into the Image boom and those were the most famous comics, but the 90s, aside from a few turds, were genuinely one of the best eras for DC. It's mostly remembered for The Death of Superman and Knightfall but in the late 90s their universe thrived with AMAZING stuff like Waid's Flash, Morrison's JLA, PAD's Young Justice, Robinson's Starman (a REAL masterpiece not talked enough nowadays sadly) and lots of fantastic graphic novels, among others. The indie scene was also thriving with stuff like Madman, Astro City, Alan Moore's Supreme and Sin City, just to name some. The later part of the decade was a fantastic time to read comics, but the only thing people remember are the Rob Liefeld drawings (because yes, finding a good Marvel comic in that period is really hard, the only exceptions are Waid's Captain America and PAD's Hulk) and the extreme Image stuff.
Yeah, there were some great gems in the 90's. But as you mention, I think the indie scenes was really where it was at. The readership was finally old enough to appreciate non-DC/Marvel books (unfortunately, the industry started losing younger readers too- that's another topic :)
Peter David and Kurt Busiek were Marvel’s Viagra in the 90’s. There was also Jim Starlin on the Silver Surfer, Priest on The Black Panther , Kevin Smith and David Mack on Daredevil , J.M Dematties on Spider-Man, and a buuunch of other goodies.
I agree to disagree. I loved The Death and Return of Superman storyarc, Knightfall, Emerald Twilight, DC Vs Marvel and the two follow up series. To me, these stories were fun to read and when I think of DC comics, I usually think of these storylines. However, I do agree that Kingdom Come, Flash , Emerald Dawn, Batman The Long Halloween are awesome reads In fact, Kingdom Come is my favorite comic book series of all time. As a Christian, I will never read Preacher. I also enjoyed DC's crossovers, well, some of them. Zero Hour and DC One MIllion are my top two yearly crossovers and I read them often. Also, I liked Bloodlines and found some of New Blood to be interesting. I plan to add Genesis, Day of Judgement, and re-add Final Night into my collection. I just love crossovers. HOWEVER, my favorite monthly comic was the Grant Morrison JLA. It was such a blast and also, Young Justice was good. And remember, another man's trash is another man's treasure.
I feel a lot of the ones you love (which is totally fine) often comes cross as too gimmicky. So as you said, one man's trash, one man's treasure :) For myself, One Million was probably the best crossover of the decade. With Genesis, I remember meeting Ron Wagner (the artists) and asking him about story points I didn't understand from it, and basically washed his hands. Pretty amusing that sometimes the people mak'n 'em don't full understand 'em :) As for Preacher, definitely not my cup of tea! But you can't deny it's impact on the industry. Cheers!
@@superheropow1 AMen! I still plan to read Genesis as I want to try to make sens eof it. But I read the follows ups to DC Vs Marvel, ALl Access and Unlimited Access and I had a lot of fun reading them. The third, to me, was the most gimmicky, but that is what made it fun. But the original of the three , that is, SC vs Marvel was the best and most epic of the three and with Peter David on issues 2 and 2, the narration took on a more mature and epic feel to me. The Clone Saga, to me was a dumpster fire. Oh, it had some good parts in it, but overall, it blew. But, back to DC/Marvel crossovers, to me, the best two are JLA/Avengers and Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-man. I like al of the others to varying degree, but those two are my favorite. And I think DC One Million was the best in house crossover DC did back in the '90s. It was fun and the art by Howard Porter killed it. While I am at it, I want to say thanks for your video on the Superfriends show. I agree that the episode with the Super-Enemies should have have been a two parter. I wish could have gottena follow up to see how things fared on that world.
I wonder if the (Batman.) animated show still holds up. I used to LOVE it (And other hero cartoons .) as a kid, but sadly the Spider-Man cartoon (Which I liked BETTER!) does NOT hold up at all! Ugh!
It still holds up! Just finished watching the show’s best episodes, including Beware the Grey Ghost, featuring the voice of the late Adam West as the Grey Ghost.
While some of the timing gets sluggish and some eps have weaker animation compared to other eps, overall it's still a great show! Been meaning to rewatch some of the Spider-Man. Only bad part I remember is that someone always had to be talking. It seemed like they could never set a quiet mood, even if they wanted, because it was blah, blah, blah, blah all the time :)
My top 10 favorite DC comics of the 90s
1. The Flash by Mark Waid
2. Batman Knighfall
3. The Death & Return Of Superman
4. Kingdom Come
5. Batman Gotham By Gaslight
6. Superman Red Son
7. Batman The Long Halloween

The flash was freaking amazing in the 90s In my opinion
I was heavy into comics in the 90s and I didn't read or know about hardly any of these. I was mainly marvel then but now I've been obsessed with DC and Batman the past few years
Cool, and I hope to get the Marvel 90's video video finalized soon :)

Great video. Brings back memories of a decade that I really don't have much memory of... :)
That's why I'm here :)
My friend, Kingdom Come is arguably my comic book series of all time. Love that series to death.
Agree with the picks. Order not standing. Great info and how it was presented.
Thank you :)

Top Marvel Comics of the 90s please!
Yes. Or Image. Didn’t Alan Moore do a run on Supreme?

It is on our short list!
P.S.- Love the Macross logo :)
@@superheropow1 Been a fan since 1985, thanks to Robotech!
like your videos. I like making lists also. Good choices.Crisis on INfinite Earths was handled A LOT BETTER than Multiverse of Marvel universe - MCU
We think alike :)
Marvel was more popular, and while there was some good Marvel runs in the 90s, DC had way better quality comic wise when looking back.
Yeah, I recall people used to say Marvel had the best artists back then, but DC had the best writers :)

Did you have a 90's list for Marvel and other heroes.
Hoping to have one soon. Stay tuned :)

I would add Red Son and Injustice
I believe both of those are post 90's :)
