In an exclusive (spoiler filled) discussion with Rohini Ramnathan, Sriram Raghavan the Director of Merry Christmas talks about the response to the film, his love for Classical Cinema transcending into the Easter Eggs and Music we see on-screen, and the praise he has for his lead actors. He delves deep into a few scenes from the Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi starrer, and breaks the same down for us.

Everything worked for me. It is a perfect film. Just that theatre going audiences need constant stimulation. Its scary how impatient we all have become.

This woman asking Sriram Raghavan that if the child was actually mute shows that she didn't understand the movie well in the first place and is overthinking basic plot points. Quite disappointed with the quality of the interview. She's asking questions that I already know the answers to. This is stupid.

Loved the movie sm.. it's so beautiful .. Cinematic masterpiece.. But sadly very few will give respect to this kind of cinema.. Above all they are comparing it andhadhun.. Merry Christmas is total different world.. We need more movies like this but same time i think do indian audiences deserve this? Bec they love only mass cinema or fast paced full on turn twists kind of cinema 🙂

Rohini sort of missed the mark in this one. But let's not diss her for this. Everyone has an off day. She has largely been thorough in most of her interviews. The way she conducted music adda for 2023 was quite commendable.
Regarding Merry Christmas, I saw it in theatres and felt at peace watching it. It was such a hopeful love story about two broken people who have done horrendous stuff but are not horrible. Don't look for usual twists and turns and enjoy the slow burn!

Well the video has a decoding of Merry Christmas in the title...so to start with, your viewers come in with an expectation to have a discussion largely on Merry Christmas. You fawning over ek Hasina thi, Johnny Gaddar etc is alright but it was too substantial a part of the discussion.
Secondly, it would have been a good idea to have a wider take with the viewers / others on your many hypotheses. The fact that he had to keep saying no to almost everything you asked him about the film is a reflection of a) how much overthinking was done b) influence of his past films informed your take on this one and hence, did not give it a fair enough fresh shot c) how none of us could relate to these questions coz no one even remotely thought them. A number of questions you asked were already clarified in the film. To ask if the child is really mute....I mean, one could argue the opposite that when Vijay sethupati told her that story and tried to make her talk, it was inevitable that she would talk and it would be a reveal. In fact a criticism could be that it was quite predictable.
The questions you could have asked :
      1. This is a love story at its very core. What is his personal take on romance ? In this one, Vijay sethuaptis character interprets it as sacrifice. He took the hit. Is that the real essence of love?
      2. Did Vijay sethupatis character find redemption in any way? He had already gone to jail for Rosie's death, was this net net fair to him?
      3. What does he imagine happens next? Will Kats character really wait? Will he come out of jail and they be together ?
      4. Katrina accepts the ring in the silent shot. You could have asked him for his take on the entire silent sequence...what exactly was he trying to say? The beauty of it was that it was left to interpretation. Mine was that the minute the girl spoke, kat would have been outed. So Vijay took the hit once she accepted the ring. It's a beautiful love story. But would have loved to know the directors take on what he was trying to convey
      4. Why did the use the burning swans? What was the metaphor?
      5. The caged Bird comes up quite a bit ..did he imagine Vijay sethupati to be permanently caged ?
      6. The plot was also criticised for being overtly simplified and slightly unbelievable. What was his response to the criticism?
      7. What parts from the book did he change and why?
      8. His ability to shoot bizarre screens with suspense and absurd is a hall mark of his hitchcockian way of being. Why did he think of enveloping a love story in this way?
      9. Why did Katrina fall in love with him? She was plotting the whole thing....there is a criticism that her ability to trust him and be with him was not sufficiently developed conversationally. He was taken in by the plot but why was there insufficient writing on her compulsions for the love. Movies like before sunrise etc have great dialogues ....a stream of consciousness of flow of words through which the characters come together. This was missing post the reveal moment for Vijay sethupati....for Katrina to be attracted to him..
      10. Like the fish, the presence of the teddy was almost a character. There is widespread criticism that the teddy had no role ...and the absurdity ended with neatly packed bows. did he originally have something in mind with the teddy? Why did the teddy occupy such an important screen presence?
This is just a sampling of movie related questions. For the next one, it would be a good idea to get more user feedback on your own interpretations and also a wider range of questions your audience wants to hear. If it was a 1:1 chat between you and the director and no audience...this would have been ok. You can gush, connect on tam stuff etc. But film companion is a serious channel and we invest time here to have serious, well researched, welk thought through questions...not one where the director is like...wtf are these qs? Did i miss the mark fully? We love how Anupama does these conversations and the OG Bharadwaj Rangan....
Here's hoping the next one is more open minded, more well researched and the title of the video matches the dialogue in it. Good luck

Merry Christmas is strictly not for masala movie lovers, it needs patience and cinema understanding, there are too many cinematic references in the film, brilliantly done. Not a masterpiece but a film well made by Raghavan Sir. 😍🔥🔥🔥🔥. It will take 5 -7 years for Indian Audience to understand.
