Putin is just buying himself time ,I think he has some terminal illness like Stomach cancer and he is doing this out of revenge for the fall of the USSR , this so called Special Military Operation will drag on until Putin dies , I cant see him escalating to using ICBMS on Ukraine , what he seems to be doing is conventional attacks to keep the field level , anyway lets hops he dies soon and then the USA and the West can do their best to fix relations with Russia , as the Russian people dont want this war they want peace but they are scared of Putin as he is like Stalin totally crazy.

The Times Radio interviewer tried very hard to get Abbas to say Putin will step down and Russia will be OK - leaving Abbas repeating the same answer over and over while being interrupted: that Russia will collapse "like after WWI" "like after Afghanistan". The Times interviewer wanted his own answer so badly that he inserted it as the closing summary (when it was not a summary) and used it to title the video. Frankly, it was a bizarre interview. In 1991 after the collapse, the West left the nuclear weapons in Russia. Surely this time they will go in and get them. They also need to break things up into more states.

Very interesting interview and well done to the Times for finding such an interesting interviewee. English interviewers do, however, seem to have an unfortunate tendency to interrupt the interviewee for no reason. I can understand it if the interviewee is avoiding the question or rambling. but often they'll get interrupted while they're saying something quite interesting.

I don't know why people are confused at what Putin is. Putin is clearly a "psychopath". All one has to do is study and learn about what a psychopath is and you will have your answer as to what Putin is, how he thinks, how he feels and all the rest of it. We know psychopaths are weak and fragile, they are cowards, they manipulate everybody for personal advantage, they are bullies, they have no empathy, they have no conscience, they need power and control by any means or they will feel total weakness and worthlessness. They are empty inside. They literally hate themselves at the core of their being. Like all cowards they play the good guy to get what they want, they play the victim, they blame the victim, they play the hero who wants to help, they play the long suffering martyr. Sadly, dumb idiots with no critical thinking enable these monsters.

Very interesting interviewee - I fear John Pienaar was just not listening to half of his answers. He clearly explained that, in his opinion, the pressure would grow until Putin became amenable to a smooth handover of power to a Putin-approved successor, but since this was not what Pienaar wanted to hear or had probably prepared for, instead of continuing down an original and interesting avenue which would have lead to the exploration of new and enlightening ground, Pienaar just kept looping back to the same old tired rhetoric about Putin being forcibly ejected from power and the ensuing chaos, which has already been explored in interview after interview. A great opportunity missed. I hope somebody with a more open mind gets to interview Mr. Gallyamov in the not too distant future. I'd be very interested to hear what he and not John Pienaar, thinks about the situation. What is the point of expending huge amounts of research effort finding someone with new, authoritative and salient opinions about what is going on if the journalist who interviews them is just not interested in hearing what they have got to say ?

Very good insight from Gallyamov. Unfortunate that the interviewer at 10:00 interrupts his description of how Putin would be able to voluntarily step down in order to ask a question that had already been answered, whether someone more hardline could take power and continue the same path. Gallyamov had already stated the resources necessary to do this are exhausted. Then after getting the same answer he interrupts at 11:40 to ask the exact same thing yet again. This interviewer needs to listen more and talk less.

@Mark Hepworth Gallyamov repeatedly said that, in his opinion, the hardliners will not be able to take over because they are not offering "the system" a possible solution to the current stressor of the Ukraine war. Ie, the collective other parties that are invested in running Russia can see it is impossible to generate enough resources (men, materiel, money) to continue the war indefinitely. He also stated that putin shuffled jobs with medvedev in '08. He has a proven willingness to step aside in a controlled way if conditions force it.
This is a new perspective to me, and suggests a certain kind of approach. Something along the lines of 1) ripping away Putin's hope that the West will get a little cold and sell out Ukraine allowing a victory, 2) raising the costs for Russia in continuing this war and 3) as distasteful as it is, letting him know he does not have to end up in the Hague, he can retire to and scheme from a mansion in Altai while his chosen successor makes the concessions on abandoning claims to ukraine and watching their accession into Nato.
