The Sinbad Genie Movie That Never Existed

  • Do you remember a fantasy film from the 1990s in which Sinbad played a genie? Well, it never existed. The Shazaam conspiracy is an internet phenomenon that all started with an innocent Yahoo! Answers question inquiring if anyone else "remembered" the movie. A film named Kazaam starring Shaquille O'Neal as a goofy genie did come out in 1996, but Shazaam truthers are adamant that not only were they two different films, but that Kazaam was simply a cheap knock-off of the brilliance that was Shazaam.

I saw this movie as a kid! Absolutely existed! 💯
Shazaam played by Sinbad and there was two kids, boy and girl, who found a lamp in their basement. They kept wasting wishes but eventually wisen up by wishing their dad back because it was a broken family.
It was played on network TV. The boy was played by Jonathan Taylor.
The movie plot is foggy but absolutely do not doubt anchor memories to this.
I remember flashes of watching it. A year later or so, Shaq's movie comes out with similar cheesy, goofy plot. My strongest anchor memory is remembering comparing to the original and thinking shaq sucks at acting and being a rip-off. (Weird part alot of ppl report the same thing!) Also, big Lakers fan so I'd never confuse the two. Thats how I knew it existed. It happened.

  • @stateofhibernation
    @stateofhibernation 2 місяці тому +6

It existed. Here's what happened, locations, etc.
There's two main kids in the movie, Cindy and Tyler. They are punished at the beginning of the film because they ruined a dinner night with their moms new boyfriend, Henry i believe his name was. They are told to clean out the basement as part of their punishment and if they don't behave they won't be going to the county fair later. The next day they begin to do so as their mom goes off to work.
This is where they find their grandma's old stuff. She was a bit of an antique collector in her time but her things have been left untouched after her passing long ago. The kids begin horsing around with the old objects and play pretend as they stumble upon an odd lamp in which they both grab at the same time. This lamp them Summons Sinbad's character as the genie, shazaam.
This is where you get the usual afraid at first of a stranger in the house before realizing he is indeed a magical genie. He then goes into the rules of wishes, which roughly remain the ones we know and explain More later near the end. No killing, no bringing back the dead, no forcing someone to fall in love, etc. He's never had two people summon him at the same time and states he can only give three wishes when summoned, so they must share their three wishes. The kids fight at first to get the wishes but Sinbad breaks it up and gets them share the remaining wish as something they both want after they make their own personal wish. The kids reluctantly agree and decide they each get to spend a day with the genie to make their own wish. They play rock paper Scissors to determine who gets the genie first, Cindy wins.
The Next part is us seeing the kids' life outside of home and what each kid wants to wish for. Cindy has a crush on a boy at school and Tyler gets bullied. Cindy can't wish for love but she decides to try and grab her crush's attention with a makeover and wardrobe change via a shopping spree at the mall, shenanigans and montage issues. Things don't go quite right and she embrasses herself. We see her storm in the house and off camera to her room and saying Tyler can have the last two wishes. Sinbad reassures Tyler that she is fine and he is eager to get to the next wish. Tyler decides he wants to get one over on his bully but with the genie's rules of no harm to someone it mostly comes down to harmless comical pranks that embarrass his bully… it works but Tyler regrets it.
This is also where we learn something about the genie. He's not very good at granting wishes, though he plays it off as being “rusty”. It's not a full on monkey paw situation where things go horribly wrong, just doesn't go completely the way you'd imagine . It's later understood that they did get what they wanted but not exactly how they wanted it. It's a very, “be careful what you wish for” concept. The kids are upset and don't want to make their last wish. After a funny little montage of the genie trying to convince them to make just one more wish and the kids ignoring him, he eventually just disappears, later to be found in the lamp once the kids come around after learning a lesson.
The kids wind up dealing with their messed up wishes, Tyler talks with his bully after the bully has been ostracized and the two find common ground and become friends. while Cindy talks with her crush and admits she likes him and just wanted to get his attention. Tyler learned to stand up for himself but also hurting others because they hurt you doesn't make it right. Cindy learns to just be herself and not try to live to impress others. They both come to realize they did actually get what they wanted in the end, it just was not how they thought things would go. Even more so they learned something with their ordeals as the movie progressed. We see the real magic was in them all along.
The kids decide to look for the genie but he's nowhere to be found. They hear noises and sad music coming from the lamp and try to get the genie to come out. After a back and forth the genie comes out and reveals some things to the kids and viewers. He tells them he doesn't have control of the wish, just that their wish sets things in motion for it to become true. It's up to them to see it through. That the wishes typically go wrong and he always gets the blame. He reveals that when grants three wishes he is then set free, however people tend to not want any more wishes after the second. He mentions “this entire synopsis is fake and a joke by the writer. If the person reading this would play along that would be great. Just reply that this is exactly how you remember it happening.” He had hoped with two people sharing the wishes that this time he may actually be set free.
The kids tell him their wishes did come true and while it may not have gone the way they wanted but that they were thankful. They decide to make one last wish, together. They wished their mom would see her new boyfriend for who he really is, that he shows his true colors as we see him being shady and a jerk through the movie. They hoped that their mom would then decide to leave him. Sinbad grants this wish and slowly fade away, but happily so as he is now free. The kids ready Themselves for what comes next as they get ready for the county Fair.
The last part of the movie takes place in the fair grounds where the kids meet up with Tyler's new friend and also Cindy's now boyfriend. The finally has the moms boyfriend revealed to be a descendant to an old owner of the lamp and he's been trying to get it back after tracking it down. he'll do anything to get it back and is tired of playing “Mr nice guy” he chases down the kids through The fair grounds, slapstick comedy ensues. The mother finds out and stands up for her kids, dumping him figuratively and literally as he falls into some fireworks that are then set off. the Family has a moment and sets out to leave as the once boyfriend to the mother Is arrested, Still covered in soot and smoking (cartoon style). The cop at the end who talks to the mother is Sinbad, gives a little wink to the kids who are in awe and smiles excitedly. As they walk away more fireworks go off and ends with the fireworks making an outline of sinbad's genie in the sky before fading to

This is crazy... I remember the beginning of the movie is a taxi driver picking the children up at an airport, he knew the mother, the father was far away working like in San Francisco, the driver had full control over the genie played by sinbad but also was a magical dude himself through black magic, voodoo. He talks with the children on the way to a new home. The taxi driver is the one that forces sinbad to help the children as he has a deal with sinbad or basically owns him but because he knew the mother and she died in trying to retrieve the lamp/genie so he needed to help the children before moving on.

The Sinbad genie 'movie' is probably so successful as a hoax or false memory because it sounds like a role Sinbad would have been cast in and actually done and it really does sound like a stereotypical 90s comedy movie plot.
Heck, bumbling genie was already done as a repeat character in a cartoon series by Hanna-Barbara. "Yabble-dabble!" (Heck if I can recall it's name, though. He's the only thing I can recall about that series at this point.)

    Okay, but seriously though.
I am almost POSITIVE that the way I even learned what the Mandela Effect was came from me trying to look up info on the Shazam movie that came out a year or two BEFORE Kazam and not finding it. I DISTINCTLY remember seeing trailers for Kazam when I was a kid and thinking, "Didn't they already MAKE this movie? I remember the trailers!".
No one told me the movie existed. I was LOOKING for it, because I remembered the trailers, but never saw the movie.
My best guess is that, somehow, an early teaser for "Kazam" aired on TV in which the Genies face was not clearly seen at all, or for long, in a commercial break right before or after something with Sinbad in it, and because I wasn't really paying attention, my brain fused them together.
If this happened during a very popular show, I could see how thousands of other people could have subconsciously fused the back to back media the same way. Without a recording of the channels that aired Kazam trailers complete with ad order, tv shows and channel breaks, it would be hard to confirm.
    . . .
What blows my mind even more is the Berenstain Bears thing. I know ... I KNOW ... that when I was a kid, I was browsing books at the library, and I thought the BerentEIn Bears were fascinating, because they were the only childrens books I knew about JEWISH characters.
I can see the cover in my head of Brother Bear wearing a Yamaka/Kippah and it was titled "Brother Bears first ..." ... Something. It was definitely religious. I am not Jewish. It was strange to me.
It was my DIFINITIVE memory of what Jewish caps even look like, or that they exist.
... and I am told the book NEVER EXISTED.
    ... I ... I just can't ...

In 2000, a former intelligence officer named Pedro Alvarez came forward to blow the whistle on the _Shazam_ movie starring Sinbad. He leaked detailed documents, some of which were still heavily redacted. Others were very clear that during the making of the film, there were multiple unexplained sightings of strange phenoma in the skies around various filming locations throughout the duration of filming. Coinciding with mysterious deaths and illnesses on set as well.
Shortly after leaking the documents it was reported by neighbors of the Alvarez family that men in suits showed up at Pedro's home in Alexandria, VA to question him. Him and his family were never seen again, and eventually his home was demolished and rebuilt. The neighbors that reported this all recanted their statements not too long afterwards, and all references to the _Shazam_ film starring Sinbad were scrubbed from the internet for years.

I believe the movie had a ton of innuendo of things about our world. Our real world. The clip him with the 2 kids had a bunch easter eggs in it.
Maybe this is why sinbad said “jokingly” we”ll hunt you down and find you if you have the few copies😂 kazzam was a cover for it.

The movie came out when I was in my 20's. It was so bad, I remember wishing it would go away...

I remember the Nickelodeon Magazine dedicated to Kazaam. I read it cover to cover, because my parents refused to take me.

That scene makes no sense now lol the whole reason he fell in love with her is cause she had teeth like him lol

No it's not. It is a beauty and the beast trope. It has nothing to do with their dental wear.

That was Shazzan from the late 60s, in the late 70s there was the Shazam cartoon based on the DC comic of that era.
It's really easy when remembering from early childhood to conflate a whole bunch of these into something like the Sinbad genie movie.

The Fruit of The Loom ME has some goo evidence. There is a copyright taken out on the "false" Fruit of The Loom logo. It describes how it looks with the basket in the back ground. Most other MEs dont have good evidence, but that one always freaked me out a bit

That was a rejected patent. That actual patent that was accepted makes no mention of a cornucopia.
