- If your reverse lights are stuck in position ON, or they don't work at all and your bulbs are not faulty - then more likely that will mean - your REVERSE LIGHT SWITCH is faulty.
This video shows how easy it is to replace reversing light switch on Audi A6. This particular car is 2005 model with 2.0tdi engine and 6-speed manual gearbox.
Here's direct link to our website with description of this job, mobile friendly, also available in PDF format:

Thanks! Great detailed video. We weren't sure how much labour was involved, but after watching your video decided to buy a new switch and do it ourselves. You saved us some money :) We ended up griding the spanner as it was too long haha 😄 that seemed to do the job.
Glad if it helps 👍
Your video helped me replace the sensor in my 2005 A4 - thanks
You're welcome :) Glad if it helps people. .
Good stuff mate...
My lights stayed on...
Now fixed..
Thanks
You're welcome :)
Good video, a lot of help, thanks. I found there wasn't enough space to use a 22mm spanner, so I used a deep reach socket, once I removed the electrical plug.
Thanks Phil, glad if it helps 👍
Thank you very very much, my light switch just went out on my 2005 Audi A4. 👍👍👍👍
Daniel, you're very welcome 👍
Thanks for your help, I hope is just light not something else
Great vid, thanks for showing.allways very well explained
Glad to know this video helps after all these years!
thanks. great video. just what I needed.
Good job, thanks nice and clear - I hear on other threads that it could be the Central Electrical Module that needs replacing ... but I'm sure this switch is cheaper so I'll try it first.
+David Saunders Anyway it's likely to be a switch. And it costs almost nothing. Definitely worth trying it first.
Great video by the way 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Great video. Thanks
Thanks so much! You saved me. It worked like a charm
You're welcome 🙂
this problem just happened to me, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

I liked when hi said
If you dead you don’t care anymore lol.
Thanks 😁👍

Grazie molto utile
Just in case, this might help someone.
In my case I struggled using 22mm wrench, thought it might be something else, but it wasn't. The bolt was damaged, so it was slipping and due to limited space in the area, I couldn't get it to move at all.
SOLUTION: I used flat screwdriver to disconnect the cable, moved the cable to safe side, and then used pliers to completely break plastic bit of sensor.
Once that was broken, I've used 22mm socket from the top, and that worked like a charm.
I now have new sensor and no lights reverse lights permanently on. 😆
Also maybe ring spanner could be helpful?
@@wawayltd Possibly, im not sure if it's sides would be too thick to get in there. Left hand side of the switch is really close to transmission, that could be an issue. Worth trying none the less :D
Where is the electric cable located from...?ive just switched my Audi A4 2000 to Manuel transmission from automatic gearbox
Thanks
Yaz Saj hi mate can you tell me on a4 2007 is the same location
Hello, thanks for video.
How can i change my switch of golf mk6
Thank you for answer!
I have one video about Golf Mk4. Your switch probably will be different, but principle should be the same. Here's the link:
ua-cam.com/video/ADsOGFmP1PQ/v-deo.html
thanks a lot...I have this problem, but I want to ask you if the parking sensors have the same switch with the reverse lights? thanks
Yes most cases
Great video. Do you know if it's the same spot for my Audi A4 (8E B7) 1.9 TDI (5gear-Manual)? Lights don't go on but bulbs are okay and fuse isn't blown.
Not sure what year is your A4, but I have one video for Skoda Superb/ VW Passat B5 1.9 TDI:
ua-cam.com/video/tliEqPR8jyU/v-deo.html
or it could be same spot as my A6. What year is your car?
WheelsAndMotors build Date is 11/2004, HSN/TSN 0588/846
is it the same with the audi a4 1.9 8e ?
Hi, i've the same car and i appreciate the videos you make for this part that i need to replace too. On the other hand, i can't unplug the cable, is it stuck or i misse a step. Can you give me more informations ? Thx in advance and keep your work :)
Oh yes, those VAG connectors sometimes can be tricky to remove.. Before pulling off, first try to push it onwards, then press that little plastic lever (so it comes off that hook) and then pull off. Alternatively, if you can fit something like a needle or little screwdriver where connector overlaps that hook, you can try to push it up and pull connector off. Sorry, my English is not good enough to explain properly. I have a video about cambelt, it's long but on 5:37 there's explanation about conectors. Don't look for 5:37 in this video, but in this:
ua-cam.com/video/oGwDYXFPKK4/v-deo.html
WheelsAndMotors Thanks for your answer, don't worry about your English, mine is bad. I'll try to remove it tomorrow and following your advices. Big thanks =)
OK thx mate, i did it this morning now car is working nice :)
hi - I have 2008 RS6 Avant. Is this 'fix' also applicable to that model too? Thanks.
I'm not sure if RS6 has same gearbox. Aren't they automatic?
Hi! I have similar problem on my a6 c6 3.0tdi, but in my case passenger side brake light didn't work, when I start the car light works for 2 sec and then gone and I have clicking noise when I pressing brake pedal, problem is that switch?Ta
Actually this video is about reverse light switch. There's also brake light switch, but if that wouldn't work - all of your brake lights wouldn't work. I would check connection on that light that doesn't work. Also with time these lights can collect water that can cause the problem. Sometimes bulb can be working, but if resistance is to high computer will switch it off.
Is this the same for a 2003 Audi A4 quattro 3.0 6-speed manual..?
+Mackie Fleishman Yes, it's the same switch in very similar location - on the right side of the gearbox.
That is exactly what happens to my light, try to contact and then nothing, I have cracked that light, there was water but in that time light working fine, when I clean it in that time problem starts. And then in same time I have problem with brake pedal, when I pressing brakes I have clicking noise, don't know what is that. Thanks
Have no idea what is clicking- in my car it was squeaking :) I believe you have faulty light, but I'm not almighty, so I can be wrong.
@wheelsandmotors I've one question for you my man :) I've changed whole clutch kit on mine (2.0tdi 175bhp) in March or April.
Everything was great since, but recently it does some random jitter when starting to move in 1st gear from idle, sometimes less, sometimes more, sometimes not at all.
Do you have any idea what it could be?
One possibly related thing that I've been told it's not in great condition in mine is drive shaft. It does make a little bit of noise when idling, and it disappears when I oress the clutch (similar to dmf behaviour).
I've done some googling, and found out that our cars even as manual transmission have some clutch switch (which funnily looks very similar to this reverse light switch).
Could that cause these symptoms?
Thank you very much for all your videos, guides and help!
Much love from a Serb in the UK 😁😆
I have changed a clutch only in my Sharan, that's different position (on a side). Not sure what is a clutch switch. Normally gearbox has few sensors/switches like the one for reverse, there can be for neutral (for cars with start-stop technology)...
Did you fit dual-mass flywheel? Did you replace flywheel at all? When dual-mass flywheel goes bad it has this rattle on idle and it goes away when you press on clutch pedal.
@@wawayltd Yea, I bought whole kit. I didn't change it myself though, it went in local garage.
Good garage? Trustworthy? Do they have any warranty/responsibility on their work?
Would it be the same for Audi a6 c5 1.9tdi manual 6 speed?
Don't know, sorry. I have a video on 1.9tdi, but with 5-speed. It was completely different to this one. If I would need to replace one, I would order switch first (because it's needed anyway) and then look around the gearbox to see where it goes.
Hello, is it important to select a gear before replacing the switch? I read somewhere that not selecting the reverse gear could cause some troubles to the gear afterwards, thanks in advance for your reply.
+Paolo Michele La Rosa (Michael Kevin) I don't see the reason why would you need to put it in reverse. Manual doesn't say anything. When gearbox in reverse - it presses button on the switch. Probably it's easier to insert new switch without button being pressed :) Maybe you read about different type of switch.
+WheelsAndMotors maybe on the automatic gear
+Paolo Michele La Rosa (Michael Kevin) Don't know yet how it works on automatic..
+WheelsAndMotors thx anyways
+Paolo Michele La Rosa (Michael Kevin) No worries :) Anytime!
Would the switch be located in the same place on a 2006 rs4? My reverse lights are sticking on ,I've bought a switch and was thinking of changing it myself.
Is your RS4 manual?
Yes it's a 4.2 6 speed manual. I've sourced a switch from it that looks the same. I'm hoping it fits the same as yours.
Just had a look in Elsa - yes, you should have it in the same place - above the right drive shaft. Switch also looks the same... or similar ;) Check with parts store.
Cheers for your help buddy 👍. Your a star.
Can it be the solution if only one bolb is not working or working from time to time? Light bulb - brand new...
No. I would check connection. These lights tend to collect water over time, metal connections get oxidized and bulbs go funny. In addition cars ECU switches off the bulb if it's outside certain electrical parameters.
Hi I need help with my passat 2008 2.0tdi manual transmissions. Reverse light is not working at all. I've checked all the visible fuses, changed the reverse light switch on the gear box, change the bulb, checked the holder for the bulb as well and the trunk wiring loom as well but can't find the problem. Could you please advise me what else do I need to check or if there is any exact fuse location you could tell me to check plus somebody told me to check where the gear shifter is may be some wiring problem there... please come back to me on this. Thanks in advance :)
Sorry Farooq, only now discovered this comment - for some reason UA-cam stopped notifying me..
I can't imagine what else can be wrong with that light. I'm not sure that there would be specific fuse for reverse light switch, although you can check with owners manual. You can test reverse light switch itself, if it's working. I have a video how to test it on old Golf Mk4. The switch is different on that car, but you can get the idea. Here is the link:
ua-cam.com/video/ADsOGFmP1PQ/v-deo.html
If switch is working, the you can go down the line checking connections.
WheelsAndMotors Hi thanks very much for your reply... yeah I've already changed the switch so that's the brand new one even the old one was fine too but I still did change it... I guess I might have to go through the wiring and hopefully will get it sorted there but thanks alot for your reply :)
Is the location the same for an automatic quatro?
I don't think so. Automatic gearbox has completely different structure, so I believe that having mechanical switch like that is unlikely. I don't know much about automatic gearboxes, so can't help you much, sorry.
Does it work immediately after fitting?
Yes, it's simple physical switch.
I think I have this problem. When I hang up, I turn on the electrical panel, the parking sensors start and moreover, when I put reverse gear, the sensors don't turn on automatically but I have to do it manually. What do you tell me? The video is very useful.
I didn't have parking sensors in my car. Do your reverse lights go on when put in reverse?
@@wawayltd no. Always on
Looks like a faulty reverse light switch. If you have the same manual gearbox, it should be the same procedure to replace it.
@@wawayltd yes, thank you. Is the switch because when i put the reverse the parking sensors don't put on.
The switch tells the system that the car in reverse gear - that puts lights on and turns parking sensors on.
However, it's quite strange to me that reverse lights are constantly on, but parking sensors are not. Perhaps something to do with ECU programming, but when reverse light is stuck on - that indicates a faulty switch.
Any fix for rear indicator not working... passenger side...
It can be either bulb or bad contact..
@@wawayltd was a bad contact...
Good man
if the switch is not working, would it disable both rear lights from working? Asking because only one of my reverse lights is not working 😅
Hi, yes, switch is for both lights.
I would check connections inside light cluster. Sometimes water gets in and some metal bits get bad.
@@wawayltd Got it, thank you very much!
I can't undo the sensor with 22mm spanner. I'm not sure if it's 21mm or if my 22mm is messed up somehow. :(
Does 21mm fit? Try socket?
@WheelsAndMotors I don't have 21mm :( I went and bought new 22mm, as they didn't have 21mm, and the one I used is borrowed, so might be slightly rounded.)
Another weird thing is, the new switch i bought is 14mm spanner size :S but by my plate it is right on eurocarparts.
Wow, that's odd. Sometimes eurocarparts can give you wrong part, despite matching number plate. I had that happen few times. When you take your old one - compare it to the new.
I don't have power from wire which comes out from car where is 7 pin, there is power for 2sec and then nothing
I had somilar problem with my central brake light. The way I solved it - bought new light. You see, computer is not going to send the voltage to that light if there's wrong resistance. If you disconnect the plug, it will try for few seconds and switch it off for safety reasons. Of course there can be another problem. But first, I would take that light apart, check/clean all connections, make sure that all bulbs are in their best conditions. If you car is 3.0tdi, then I believe you also have LEDs. Don't know much about them..
i cant finde by my a6 c5 2002 automatik:( please help
Sorry, I don't know how it works with automatic gearbox.
I have this problem with my 2004 Audi S4, is the switch on the same spot on a S4 or a different one?
Is your gearbox manual?
Yes
WheelsAndMotors yes
+Oscar Hernandez 5 speed?
+WheelsAndMotors yes
I will try replace light, anyway need to do, and then I will see what's happened
U can have a look on my UA-cam I'll posted there video with that clicking noise
Whole light can be pricy, but if there's nothing can be done.. Sorry, I really can't help you with the clicking - I never knew what was squeaking in my car.
is it the same for 2001 audi a4
+Paddy Joseph Sorry, I couldn't find anything for reversing switch on your car. Are there any switches/sensors on the gearbox?
yes there are reverse switch on gear box but i had no idea how to change it. i have the part exact same as part you used but nobody has any info on net of how to change it
+Paddy Joseph 22mm spanner or deep socket?
22mm spanner
Easy ;)
Good video but why did you wear nice clothes carrying out the job!? lol!!
They were not that nice :) Not so dirty job either..
Hi I couldn't find this switch in my car,🤦🤦🤦🤦 and my car is 2008 A6 S6 C6 Quattro
Manual gearbox?
@@wawayltd automatic 2.7
Sorry, automatic is completely different, and I don't know much about it.
@@wawayltd thank you so much but you really help with your videos and your work. I do appreciate the knowledge and info you give us. Thanks again
Thanks 😊
