We fish with steadfast med/heavy 10ft rods also here in South Texas. . Paired with Avet Mxl or Lx raptors all the time. Great rod's. Never thought about cutting one down for a 80 avet. Good idea!👌👌
Nice video brother. I'm an old sharker these days and stuck in my ways for the most part but a good fisherman is always trying to learn new things. The whole braid thing has been a challenge for me lol but I'm getting it. I still prefer to fight a big shark on straight mono but braid really offers line capacity which we all need especially with the newer style reels.
Appreciate it brotha!! You are a shark fishing legend! 🙌 Experience is the best teacher for anything and bad experiences can turn someone off of something FAST! We can understand why braid draws hesitatation. One run on the wrong shell and its done for.
Now you’re making me think about getting an Avet for my next reel instead of another tiagra 🤔. Here I thought I was a crazy person holding 35lbs of drag at strike against hammerheads, might need to look into some steadfast equipment!
Yeah we used to own some tiagra 130s but we had to adjust the preset on the beach to get it to set good when we had the drag set to 65 at strike and we don't like messing with the preset on the beach!
@@GulfCoastNation could you elaborate on that more I have a 80w using 100lb j braid with 150' of 300lb mono to a 10' steel cable trying to get a massive black tip here on the east coast. Hey Hey G Son Good info you are giving. Good to see you are doing well. Looking for some fish on the beach soon. The steadfast rods are amazing to fish with. Have a good week, and maybe the weather will give you all a break. j MAN
"Old school" shark fishing got many many sharks killed. Which proved lbsf not to be sustainable long haul. We have since adapted (along with new regulations, because of "old school" tactics) and use heavy line and heavy drag to get sharks in to minimize the death of sharks after release... we do this for a living and know how to properly target, tag, and release sharks. We handle right around 200 a year...
I'm new to LBSF so I don'i know exactly what I need. I live in Mississippi and fish our shallow waters. I don't expect to catch anything over 10' at best. What Penn reel do you recommend ?
Question: I have 2 spinning setups right now, I'm thinking the next logical step up would be to add a 50W to the arsenal to drop 100-200yds or so. Does that make sense or should I go straight from spinning to an 80W? Great video!
Hey! Glad you liked the video and thanks for watching! Just east answer we would recommend going with the 80w! We say this because long term it will be a better investment! Now if you get an 80w and spool it right you can target large sharks, the only thing we would say to be aware of would be your experience handling sharks! You know yourself best so if you have handled quiet a few tippers and sharks with your spinning setups then go ahead and start running a setup for the big hosses. Have a release procedure ready, release bucket ready, and assign release jobs to your people helping BEFORE the fish hits the beach!
@@GulfCoastNation get an 80. If you are cutoff on a 50 you are basically 1 and done. With the 80 you will probably be able to send it back out due to the line capacity.

You guys look like your team Mak these days. How have the Avets stood up? I have been looking for an upgrade and leaning more towards a Makaira or International based on longevity and issues.
Yes!! We have shifted over to the makiara seA models and LOVE them!! Avet has let us down pretty hard a few times in the past so we have to find more reliable reels
I have a Penn international 2 50tw, with roughly 500-600 yards of 100lb braid and 100lb mono topshot, Do you think that’ll be enough for 8ft to 10ft sharks? The drag at strike is roughly 28lbs and at strike it’s roughly at 40lbs
Thats a good setup there! I would say ideally you wouldn't break over 8ft on that setup because the wrong 10ft fish could be an hour + which results in dead sharks.. if you do find yourself in that situation I would go to full drag and use a glove to add more pressure on the spool. 40 pounds to a 10ft+ fish isn't much at all
@@Fishyfisherman yes sir! Just don't wanna cut corners then end up with a 1000 pound fish dead on the beach, thats a lot of trouble and fish to deal with, plus having a dinosaur die like that would be very sad!
