Fred Couples was my Golf hero when I was just starting out in golf back in 1986. Fred was just gaining a name for himself in those days but for me he had the most beautiful swing in golf and I was certain he would come to be one of the world's best golfers. In 1996 I went to the British open with my brother at Royal Lytham just so I could get a glimpse of him. Someone advised to go on the practice day because then you have a better chance of meeting the players and that is exactly what I did.. The sporting Gods blessed me that day because I met Fred on the practice putting green. I chatted with him for about 15 minutes and he gave me his autograph. He was so friendly that he became even higher in my eyes. I told him that I was certain he was to become a legend in golf. He smiled and said I had more faith in him than he did in himself. My prediction came true of course. On my wall in my office I have a framed photo of me and Fred from that day with his signature underneath. Young folks today don't have heroes and I think that is kinda sad. Heroes give us inspiration to better ourselves. To this day I feel inspired to play better whenever see Fred play.
What I’ve noticed about really good golfers is the money come second they want so much to play good golf and when they don’t, it becomes a real mental game
Rough day for Greg. Never seen him play that putter, he generally used a Wilson 8802 or a Ping Anser 2. Greg Norman was an absolute hero of mine growing up. I always watched every tournament when he was in Australia and as much as I could when he was over seas, mainly just the Majors being televised. I was in his Junior Foundation and was coached by Charlie Earp who was Greg's Professional for his traineeship and early coaching.
Single, double, triple (bogeys, that is) in the first four holes. Definitely not Greg Norman's day. But on another note. It's always nice to hear Dave Marr's voice on a golf broadcast. And with Jack Whitaker, no less. Talk about the good old days of golf broadcasting.
Par is like my friend, always welcome. Birdie is like my special friend, can stay for the weekend. Bogey comes uninvited, shows up out of nowhere, ruins the party.
This is interesting to see this 27-odd years later. I heard it had happened, but i was probably also playing that very day across in Tain. Seeing all the familiar faces from the past. I've played the course a few times. And i mind trying to serve Greg Norman bacon butties and hot chocolate when he'd be out practicing like a driving range on the course itself. His caddie always took it, but never him. Blast from the past, no idea how this was suggested on my youtube list.
Couples has a swing with such unrushed tempo, sort of a gravity golf swing, lift-turn-drop, with power to burn! He hits that Lynx Parallex 2 iron on the dime. Norman is using those forged "Mac cobra" blade irons , I remember seeing Norman grind Cobra irons in the stores with black Dynamic gold shafts, actually several versions and they sat in the used section for quite a long time! Two of the best players from that time, a year later we all got "Tigermania"!?...and that was all you heard about golfwise. Thanks for the memories!
agreed. That was gorgeous...im gonna go practice that shot tomorrow :) Maybe one day,if I practice that shot the rest of my life I could hit it half as well
I know what these guys were dealing with in that wind. I once played in about 30-40mph SUSTAINED winds, and it was just brutal. I hit 6 iron about 195 on a calm day, and I had the wind coming straight back in my face from 125 and absolutely crushed a 6 iron dead stiff, lol. I thought it was gonna be over the road behind the green. It was so windy the ball was blowing off tees and moving on the green when you're trying to putt. Crazy.
Ha! I still play a set of lynx black cats. Love em but I’ve re-glued most of the heads back on a couple of times each now. A few years back they started occasionally flying off when hitting a shot. I don’t want to give them up but if it happens again this coming season, I might have to hang them up. The graphite is pretty chewed up where they fit into the hozzle. I still feel confident playing my black cats though, they’ve served me very well since the 90’s.
Poor choice of a golf course when you got 2 of the best drivers of the ball and they can't hit many drivers on this course, people want to see these 2 hit their driver.
I’ve always thought that Freddy seems like one of those really cool guys that everybody likes at first then they find out he’s just an extreme asshole and will talk down to you and belittle you treating you like shit if he’s in bad mood. Idk why I think that. He usually seems nice on tv. But behind closed doors I wonder? Anybody know??
Really? There is nothing in this 53 minutes to suggest that all, quite the opposite it seems. As opposed to the guy in your avatar who cheated with a 100+ woman rofl
Fred, if you're reading this, I'll buy that sweater off of you.

1996, if anybody's wondering.
Great to see two of the worlds greatest players having a laugh and accepting that on a day like that the course wins.

What an amazing outing, from 2 Iconic players.
I miss Dave Marr, a fantastic commentator and fine golfer in his time.
Golf is the only sport I know of that can make the best players on the planet look average depending on the conditions. What a game.
Great video Rob.

Reminds me of the 96 Masters lol No , Norman is my favorite golfer seriously

Dave marr was awesome. Never said anything stupid always on point and a good voice. Won the PGA at laurel valley

Wonderful stuff. Thanks
with all due Respect to Jack Whitaker, I wonder if Fred Couples is comfortable being called "Freddy" all day long. I'll take Peter Aliss, thanks.
Greg was number one in the world at one time.He had the lowest stroke average on tour.He never lost his swing but he lost his confidence to score.
thanks for uploading this video! it was really really awesome to watch! i love freds butter swing, so smooth and natural!
Fred is dirty with the 2 iron in these shell matches
agreed. That was gorgeous...im gonna go practice that shot tomorrow :) Maybe one day,if I practice that shot the rest of my life I could hit it half as well
Dave Marr . epitome of class .
40 to 50 mile an hour gust how can you even play in that? I’ve tried several times in Reno Nevada very windy. It was just a miserable day.
20:23 one of the coolest shots I ever saw Fred hit...that ball didn't get 2 feet off the ground haha
I wonder what kind of appearance fees they would require to start this series up again?
So glad I got to see Fred Couples play in 2010... Think in Redmond, Washington? Definitely made me love the game more.
Ever wanted to see what it’s like to play 18 holes during a hurricane?? There you have it folks! Jeeze Louise!!
Freddy Couples and Greg Norman? Who are those guys?! Thanks for posting, great players.
im scottish and i can assure you the golf course always wins. i prefer golf sims!
Dave Marr is one of my favorite players
Crazy, you'd never see a pro on TV without a hat on these days
Sponsors require it, they are starting to look like NASCAR drivers these days
Freddy couple, "I just smoked that!...lets go in now"
this looks like fun
I like Rob Williams
Thx for posting, robw1031.

Like Christmas. Special but only turns up once a year.

Always a bridesmaid.
What year was this?
1996
@@robw1031 cheers, I ended up Wiking it, shame it's ended as I loved this series.
Greg Norman There u happy now LOL
What course?
Norman never really embraced being bald ha
Neither of them even attempt to play links golf hitting fly balls
Nothing like seeing the Shark get his ass kicked. What a terrible person.
Greg Norman wasn’t a pressure player. Just sickening watching his game from the supposed premier golf player of that time in those early holes.
Just the 6 years at #1...

Very true , especially couples

No comment....
Stupid comment Lony
Greg certainly shut up quickly didn't he.
Couples is still out there playing great golf and Norman is a front man for a pyramid scam.
Do you care to share what are the bloatedman basis for the attack here you make is all about... anyway?
+bloatedman lol
what's A Pyramid scam? please enlighten me.
Really? There is nothing in this 53 minutes to suggest that all, quite the opposite it seems. As opposed to the guy in your avatar who cheated with a 100+ woman rofl
Embarassing
What course is that?
