My Grandma having served in the WRNS during WW2, used to listen to the Shipping Forecast every night til 2 days before she died at age 85. We played ‘Sailing By’ at her funeral. Still missing you Grandma ❤.
My Dad had a boat for fishing and pleasure and I remember listening to the shipping forecast from an early age. I still listen to it to this day, and love it.
When I set of a daft o' clock, the pleasure in knowing it's on its way is a good feeling as you call out the areas just before the announcer, it's beauty is in its rhythm as you imagine all these places in your minds eye....it's perfection.
Automated interaction. Regularly I come across comments with several replies and there aren't any when you click on them. I'm sure UA-cam adds interaction to try and draw in interaction.
Because they only have five minutes in which to deliver the forecast every single word has a meaning, if I can remember them - imminent = within the next 6 hours, soon = within 6 to 12 hours, later = more than 12 hours. I found meteorology one of the really fascinating parts of during my Merchant Navy training.
Wonder what the shipping for cast was for Boxing Day 1999 I think. I rem my barometer in Glasgow going off the scale and when I measured it it was around 946millibars. I still listen to the shipping forecast here in Australia via R4 google home
The question I wanted answered is “How long has the shipping forecast been broadcast on the radio?”. And a lot of other questions about the radio broadcasts, like did they discontinue them during WW2? for example. Was it always on radio 4? In cases where the programming is split, do they ensure that it is available on LW? And so on. So many unanswered questions!!

As a small boat sailor for 40 years. Six Atlantic crossings on a 33 foot boat and always relieved to hear the BBC Shipping forecast. Thank you x
I have spent a large part of my life listening to the Shipping Forcast. It is strange, reassuring, and a great sleep aid.

My compliments to the Lady narrating this video.
I listen to it to go to sleep. It’s amazing.

I rate this video moderate, occasionally good.
Ha😂
I am always puzzled by these UA-cam dislikes - how's it possible to dislike a video of less than ten minutes on the history of shipping forecast?🤔
Tiny minds, I imagine.

This is so very interesting and doesn't need the music at all!
Very interesting and vital history. Thank you Met Office
Cool video, love finding gems like these.
Fitzroy was also the captain of HMS Beagle - the ship that sailed Darwin around the world.
Love these wee videos! 😊

There's a word limit as well. It's really limited and designed to get as much information across in as little data as possible.
@@mrrandomperson3106 all fantastic

Fascinating. It's a amazing what they were able to achieve before satellites and computers came along.
@Shrek Orgre At 1200 (LW )?
🌈🙏
State of the comments. People will complain about anything. Nice video, especially loved the music x
Splendid, bang on
You know you're on a shipping forecast video when people complain about a theatrical score played moderately in the background.
Some people have auditory issues trying to differentiate between the words and the loud music. Please don’t judge.
She nailed this

Who is the Met Office? Your “about” doesn’t say -
Do please please remove that totally unnecessary and distracting background ‘music’ - Please!!!!
"Rowers" = oarsmen"
Please ditch the music! This is so interesting but the music detracts
Music is annoying. Other than that awesome 👍
Shame no mention of Martin Rowley.
Please cut the unnecessary music. You're distracting from the information and ultimately the message of your video.
It really isn't distracting at all.
It is great music. Keep it on.

@@Dogboidesu it can be for some people. Don't forget autism, ADHD etc exist.
Great video ruined by unnecessary library music...
Hey, dial the music back. This isn't a Michael Bay movie.
Pity about awful background music ruins video almost impossible to hear conversations with stupid noise get rid please.
the new announcer reads too fast
Interestung video however is there no men available? One would also ask why she said "least well off" and not poorest?
Well, this woman has the most boring job IN THE WORLD
